My oldest son and I were watching a video of the 101 in the A Shau on U-Tube the other day and he saw an RTO with the hand-set wraped in plastic. He ask me why? I explained that it was to help keep the dirt and moisture out. Then he ask, "How did you keep it out of your weapons"? I told him that we sometimes put "condoms" over the barrels. He doesn't believe me. Will someone write back and verify this. Thanks.
Above the Rest,
frank

With Thanksgiving approaching this weekend, I want to say thank you to each of you who served. My father, who I have never had the honor of knowing, served in Vietnam. All I know about him is that his first name was Thomas, he was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA and left from there to go overseas. His father was a police officer in his home town. I have a huge hole in my heart with room for him but just knowing the service he did for our country makes me so proud. If he is out there and wanted contact, I'm here.

Does anybody remember being on Hill 642 (later became FB Kim Qui), 3 klicks east of Veghel, in April or May '71? I was in an NDP up there with a platoon that had a dink 3 man recon party walk into an MA one night. Two dead and the 3d was captured, had a leg blown off. He turned out to be an ops officer that had been fighting since early in the war. I was supposed to interrogate him, but didn't want to go back to the rear. Just wondered if anybody remembered that or whether I'm imagining it.

I remember a few names; Cole, carried the M60, Grey was a RTO, I treated Groll for a sucking chest wound. I don't remember a lot of details, it was a long time ago, and I basicly was just following the guy in front of me. I would like to hear from anyone that I served with.

I wish to sincerely thank Yankee Jim,and Hannibal for helping me with everything. Without them and all the help that they gave me; I never would have found out the what, or where, about my brother's death. I did get some of my brother's medal's and some of his paperwork from the Army. You will never know what this has done for me. He deserved what little I could do to protect his memory. I would like to hear from anyone else that knew PFC Dennis Lamar Bunting,Machine Gun Crew, B Company-2nd Battalion 327th Infantry 101st Airborne Division. My son (Dennis Lumar) was named after my brother, and was born in the 10 day period between my brothers death (Sep. 17, 66) and his birthday (Sept. 27, 66) and I would like to have pictures from his time in Viet Nam, as well as letters from others who served with him. Thank You Doug Field from the bottom of my heart for the artical you wrote about "Hill 86" I never knew what my brother went through. He gave his all, as did all his brothers that night. Today is October 28th. When I woke up this day in 1967 I was safe within a Tiger Force NDP. Earlier the day before 1st Platoon B Co. was ambushed and pinned down, ammo depleted, no Tac-Air or Arty in and around a rice paddy on an Operation in I Corps for nearly 6 hours. With the Platoon Sgt. useless from fear, the medic, Norm Bagley actually led the defense. With the rest of the Company deployed and engaged elsewhere...we were doing an end run around the NVA regulars or that was the plan, to come to the relief of the Company Command Group and another Platoon who were pinned down, too. Under heavy automatic weapons fire and having sustained heavy casualties we held on as best as we could; retrieving some wounded, recovering ammo from our KIA, and otherwise soldiering on. 2 days previous we re-supplied and got 3 cherries, who were all KIA later, sat out the monsoon night in a Firebase and humped a lot of klicks to get to where we'd be close enough on the 27th to hit the NVA. Besides the fear, I most remember the cold, and being harassed throughout the night by the NVA. Later in the day on the 27th, with the skies clearing, hearing the busting of bush and the cries of "Above The Rest" coming from the Tiger Force guys, I remember reaching into my fatigue shirt and kissing Airborne Mary. The amazing part was after securing our defensive positions, they got on line, laid down a base of fire and charged the NVA positions and recovered our men. I was an M60 gunner and I was down to maybe 40 rounds having gotten the ammo our survivors carried. Our other gunner, Caan was KIA and I had already used his ammo as well as a cherry named Stohl who carried an M79. Up to and including that night when Tiger Force came for us, I had never in my life broken a tear. Every year since, I go to mass and pray for my comrades and for myself.
No Slack!

Troopers, does anyone who deployed to South Vietnam aboard the USNS Eltinge in July 1965 recall getting their Ocean Crossing Card? If so, please contact me. Most everyone who crossed the 'big pond' by ship received one. I have seen a number of Ocean Crossing cards issued to troopers from WW II, Korea to Vietnam. I served in 3rd Plt., Co. A, 3-506th and later became our battalion PIO. On the trip over, I worked alongside our company clerk and helped issue these cards. I and many others in my orignal group have theirs and I can help you get a reproduction of yours, if you want it. If any of you reading this message served part of your tour with our 3-506th, please contact me, because we are searching for you. Jerry in Montana

Had the honor of serving with 3/327 for 2 years. I used to use the patch on my sleeve as motivation when times seemed tough, I'd look at it and think of the men who wore it before me, and what they had gone through and things always seemed to get better from there.
Thank you Brothers!

Looking for info about my grandfather, Daniel Frederick Dorman (b. 3/17/1917 in PA – d. 10/1944 in Holland of injuries sustained during Operation Market Garden) who was a First Lieutenant in the Headquarters Company of the 2nd Battalion of the 327th Glider Infantry. He was a glider infantry man.

Early in October 1944 his Battalion was send to `the Island`, between the river Maas and Waal. He was wounded near the village of Opheusden and died of his wounds in Zetten, some miles away from Opheusden where the Americans had a first aid station. He was first buried at the temporary American Cemetery in Molenhoek, near Nijmegen and was reburied at Margraten (military cemetery) after the war.

Hi Chuck, you may or may not remember me, my dates with Bravo 2nd platoon 2nd squad 2nd fire team began 9/10/68 Tinkerbell was our platoon leader at the time and we had a black wiry platoon sergeant, I remember a ?REBEL? who hailed from West Virginia, he told everybody he was an explosives expert but really weren?t we all, I remember Rebel came back for a second tour then got fed up with being out there and professed to CID that he was a drug addict, he even went so far as to puncture holes in his arm with a clean nail, I was a witness to the event because I was in the rear for emergency dental surgery and had to guard him for three nights and days, they told me that if he escaped then I would do his time at LBJ, what a crock, anyway they gave him six months I returned to the field and I have just heard rumors about what happened to him after his ordeal. Oh yeah, my name is Dale Grabb. I am currently out in Rhode Island visiting with another 2//327th trooper Dan Carr and the last captain you and I had on our tour of duty, a Captain Thom Piel. My email address is [email protected] , I am originally from Oregon but recently moved across the Columbia River to Camas, Washington. I cannot remember Rebel?s real name, but I do have a bunch of orders back at my home for various medals, movements etc. that includes just about everybody in the company and I?ll bet Rebel?s real name is in there someplace.

Dale G.

Very informative website, learned alot from it! I was wondering if ANYONE KNEW Rome Edward Dimmerling. Our family was always told that he was a photographer, but have recently learned that he was a machine gunner in B co. 1/327, 101st Airborne. He was killed April 20,1968 from an assault which eventually lead to the establishment of Firebase Veghel. I would really like to have contact with anyone that knew him, it would mean alot! Any Veteran that is reading this,....Thank you.

Third Platoon, Third Squad from April 1970 through the end of that year. Started with 14 guys and within one month we were down to four - Roy, Cal and Papa. The operation on 882 and 714 was too intense. Sammy Gullart was killed that May. Walked point mostly because I was the cherry buck sergeant, along with Jenson and Unruh. Spent Christmas in Sydney, Got back to the rear and Top sent me to LBJ with a very doped out prisoner. Hated Bastogne during the monsoon so Top kicked me back out in the woods as a supply sergeant. Captain Mills, and Captain Turner were great. Didn''t get much opportunity to know the new CO but he seemed too gung ho for the 1971 version of the war. Ron Curtis was killed in February 1971 when his frag went off accidently. That ended the war for me, Jensen and Sullivan. Got home and could not adjust to the noise, smell and speed of the world. Now I have a small farm and some sense of peace. Malowicz had less peace than me but I think he's okay now. Met his wife and kids on Long Island but I can't find him now. That sucks.

I am looking for any information on Joe Foster who served during WW2. I believe I am his daughter. As I am now 62 years old,he is probably deceased but I would just like to know more about him. All that I know is that his was nicknamed "Slim". He was about 5ft 10ins tall and had a gap in his front teeth. He was obviously a good man, who sent money for me until I was fifteen. I just want to know more about him.

my name is José G. Ramos, I am the Vietnam Veteran who began the campaign in 2000 to have a national day of recognition for the Vietnam Veterans, then in 2004, I rode my bicycle from Whittier, CA to Washington DC to ask Congress and the Senate for thier support. Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez of Norwalk, CA and Senator Boxer also from CA. both introduced their own personal bill to each of the Houses. these bills ask the President, to designate March 30 of every year as the official "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day." now congress has unanimously passed H.Res. 189 and are now preparing to send the bill to the President's desk for signing. what we have done in anticipation of that bill being sent to the president, is we have printed up 5,000 postcards which we are now having signed by everyone we know and any stranger in the street who cares. the last time we did a postcard campaign in 2004, we delivered over 10,000 postcards to DC on our bicycles. when congress is ready to send their bill/letter to the President, we will then send as many postcards as we have had signed up to then to the President's office in support of the Congressional letters. i just wanted to give you an update, because, now that congress has taken the matter to the President, I feel it will not be long now before he signs our bill. which will make March 30, 2008 the first official welcome home day. but what i would like to ask from you is that you help me out with my write in campaign to the president. I have the postcards all printed up, all they need is a signature and a 26 cent stamp. I will be glad to send anyone as many postcards as they think they might need or be able to have their friends and family sign. This campaign is going to become a reality. but now is when I need the help of all of America. it is time to fix the old wrong and together we can do it. I sure hope ya'll can help me out with this by posting it on your web site. God bless you my friends and may God bless. YOU CAN CONTACT ME AT [email protected]

My recruiting sgt the late SSG Stuart Albert Gerlisky was at HHC Company before going into recruiting.

We had the same battalion commander LTC Ohle.

SSG Gerlisky was there from 1981 - 1983 and I was there from 1984 - 1986.

I just found out that 3rd Battalion / 327th Infantry known as "Battleforce" was retired in August 2005.

What a shock !!! !

man where does one start was assigned just before the push in the ash shaw valley before the tec assigned as a asst m-60 gunner became the gunner in the first fire fight became a medic in the middle of the second then a trip to the hospital in japan back in time for a trip to eagle nest back to the hospital and so on spend most of my life trying understand why I came home at all. There is a part of me that never did make it home and again too much of what I did to others did-guess peace will come in the end. For all those who came back from the front lines and made something out of the rest of their lives god bless-for those still trying to fine the high ground god bless-for those sill trying to make it I and others are and will always be there for you just make yourself known-became a drill instructor at fort dix then a gareer couselor-now just a vet-looking for the sun rise and set each day. always wanting to know is any war worth the pain - peace to ya

Some months ago i decided to adopt a grave of an American soldier buried in the Margraten Cemetery in Holland. I have always felt deep respect for those heroes who gave their lives for my freedom.
i have adopted the grave of 1/Lt. Daniel F. Dorman of the 327th Gliders, 101st airborne division.
I know that he died of wounds on October 10th 1944 in Holland during Market Garden but i would like to know more info on this hero, hopfully anyone will be able to help me.
If you have any info at all about him or know where i can find out more about him, please mail me at;

Hello Brothers of the 327. I was with Alpha Co. 1/327 vietnam 1970-71. I am trying to get the word out about the just released book, An Enormous Crime. This is a must read for every service person and their family's.
It chronicles the attempt to bring our POW's home from Vietnam that were left behind in 1973. This is not a book of heresay. It is archival, declassified documents that show how each presidential administration has either covered up or just ignored the fact that there were approx. 700 live americans that were left. Whether they are alive or dead now it doesn't matter but we as a nation and especially as veterans owe it to our brothers that gave their all in vietnam to raise OUR voice as we did March 2007 in Washington DC for the Gathering of the Eagle and make it known that WE want our brothers home to their family's.
Get the book. Read the book. Pass it on to the next brother or your family member. Then write your congressman, Senator, and especially the President and demand for action. It has gone on long enough.
Thanks.
Mil "Bigdog" Thornton

While watching the motocycle parade at DC this Memorial Day weekend, I started a converstion with the guy standing next to me who was also a Vietnam Veteran. I asked him who he was with and he stated he was with the 327th. About blew my socks off. His name is Lloyd Williams and he was with C Co. 2nd/327th from Sept '68 to Sept '69. I asked him if he has been to the 327th web-site and he said he isn't to computer literate. Any way he wanted to let anyone who knew him that he is still alive and well, living in Hunstville, Alabama.

My last day was in Asah Valley where I took 2 AK rounds on 4/28/68, we had come in to help out CCo which had taken a lot of KIA's.
My nickname was "blondie",but I wasn't really a blond. (long story) I'm lookin for "Whitey", now he really was a white blond and came out of Florida. I was from Illinois at that time.

Bastogne Bulldogs,
What a great website! I enjoyed visitng, reading the GuestbookBastogne, and understanding the history of this great unit, just a little bit more. My father (Tech 5 Max Lawerence Conant) served with HQ Co, 3rd Bn, 327 Glider Infantry during WWII. He has since passed away and it is through this site I can understand his combat history.

May God keep you all safe and bless you for your Service to this country during a time of war once again.

Served in ABU 1/327 from May 66-67, and in the states with the 501 in Detroit Riots. Looking for old members of 101 in VN, Sgt Bailey, Sgt Ferlo, SP4 Hottenstein, Jim Hindman. Bailey and Ferlo were "lifers" and probably retired from service. Hottenstein was from Philadelphia. Hindman was from Atlanta, GA. Probably waited to long but I'm giving it a shot.
