Hello,
Today I got a phone call to help out someone down the road because his father passed away two days ago. Since I am the only one in the area that has been or is in the military they called me to help piece together his uniform for burial. Long story short, this man who I wish I knew did three tours in Vietnam and was wounded three times. I have been putting together his ribbons but felt I should try to tell someone else.( maybe get a hold of someone who knew him) I thought if I could say something at his funeral about his military time that would be great! Anyway his name is George G. Blackmar. I know he ended his time a SGT. I also know his was in the 101st, Aco 2nd Bn 327th, I know he was in in 67 (don't know what tour) looks like unit crest honor and country. If you can help me and his family I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
CPT (P) Eric T. Carlson

Would like to know any information about an SFC that was on the operation to the FB Fury AO in April 1971 with 1-327. He'd been wounded on a previous tour with 1 ID and his hand still bore the consequence. He was a drill with C-3-3 at Ft. Leonard Wood in 1969, where I met him. He was a good man, and I can't remember his name.

I am always amazed at the number of troopers that sign the guest book with how much they enjoyed their time in the 101st and especially 327th Regiment. These troopers should join the 101st Airborne Division Association. This organization was established at the end of WWII to perpetuate the brotherhood of the Screaming Eagles, no matter when you served,
My background with the division, I returned from Japan with the 508th RCT in July 1956 to help form the 101st into an Airborne Division. I was assigned to E Co 506th ABG also served with HHC 327th ABG and the C&C; Bn. I later served as a Plt Ld with B Co 2/327th and then commanded C Co 2/327th 67/68. I am currently the Chairman of the Board of the 101st Association. I am with the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter. If you are truly interested in the 101st please contact our Secretary/Treasurer Sam Bass to get information on how to join and find out about all of the good things that the Association is doing for our soldiers and their families at the following address: 2703 Michigan Ave/PO Box 929 Ft Campbell, KY (270) 439-0445. You can also call me especially if you served with me or would just like information on the 101st Association.

I am the governor of the 502nd Regiment or the O'Deuce as we use to be called back in Vietnam. I will be taking an active part in the Gathering of Eagles on March 17th in Washington DC at the Vietnam Memorial and the surrounding Hallowed ground helping to protect our other sacred Monuments as well from the anti-military, anti-American Cindy Sheehan, Jane Fonda ilk who will be attempting to use our sacred Vietnam Memorial as their back drop in their propaganda ploy and demonstration against our troops fighting in Iraq and SW Asia. I am trying to find as many Screaming Eagles as possible who will be there in Washington on the 17th as well as to look for the Black 101st Screaming Eagle Flag and to rally to me and each other so we can stand together as a Band of Brothers against this horde of un-American protesters. I am trying to get a head count of some kind and I can be reached at my email address or on the Gathering of Eagles website at the North Carolina link or comments page. Congratulations YJ on your safe move. I hope the sale of your home in Fla is swift and brings you great profit. It is a little cooler in Tennessee, but you'll be closer to friends and dryer most of the time.
I hope my friend Don Matthews is allowed to join us at the site with his own page. My lengthy and frequent email correspondances with him convince me that he is one of us despite his unit designation. He slept among the same trees and in the same rain. His military contributions cost the NVA dearly and saved a lot of 327th lives.

I was a voice intercept operator with the 265th Radio Research Company. I was attached to platoons from both battalions at various times in 1971. I was with a company of 1-327 on the CA to the FB Fury AO on 14 April '71. I was with a platoon from D/1-327 in late August/early September on the Dong A Tay (Bloody Ridge) complex. During this op, I found a battalion from the NVA 6th Regiment that was subsequently made combat ineffective with tacair and an Arclight. I'm most proud of my time supporting the 327th.

After getting out of the military immediately after returning home from Vietnam (1970), I had no connections with the military. At least not until the last several years. I have worked in Qatar, Kuwait, and presently at Camp Liberty, just west of Baghdad. I travel with MPs to police stations to advise, train, and equip Iraqi Police. I had been a police officer in the States. Anyway, I really enjoy working with the guys, and yes, the gals of todays Army. Met several of the 101st passing through when I was at Camp Doha, Kuwait, before the war. That was great! I just found this site and am really happy and excited about it. I will be contacting several guys I located here. And if you know me from Vietnam, please write. And if anyone else wants to write, please do.

I went to jump school at Ft Campbell in Jan 59. Was with Co E 327th Infantry Airborne Battle Group. Was there from 59 to 61. Was a fixed wing aviator in Nam from 68-69. Provided support for the 101st near Dong Tam in Jul 68. The unit was in contact and once they broke contact they were being sniped at and being a newby felt helpless. I was flying with wheels on the deck trying to flush the sniper. I did finally sending a squad in to get him. AIRBORNE - ALL THE WAY. I guess we never forget. Call sign Nonstop 38 (Indian)

I was just looking for anyone who served with my father, Peter F. Malae. His unit, from the best of my knowledge was HHC/HQ 2/327 "Hawk Recon 1-1". He had a good friend who was a Sgt. Rick Vaughan and they had the same tattoo on their backs of a huge "jump wing" that had the words, "101st Airborne-Death Is Sweet" in the middle. Also, I remember him mentioning a John "Paladin" McKnight?? He also had an AG with the last named Bridges, they called him "pretty boy" because he used to put Noxema on his face while they were in the bush! The team used to chew him out, because they didn't want the gooks to smell that crap on his face! Those were the interesting stories I remember from my dad. Any information would help, especially anyone who might of served with that team from '66 to '67 because after '67 he transfered out of the unit to a combat tracker team with the 173rd, thanks.

I served with the Tiger Force from May 1966 through July 1967. The last operation I was on was in Song Ve Valley. I have just finished reading the book Tiger Force. There is a lot written that is only collaborated by a few of those in attendance. I have no doubt that some of it is factual but I remember a few of the incidents described in the book, and my minds eye sees them through a different portal than what was written. Suffice to say that all occurred a long time ago, in a different life and time. I am proud of my service. I am extremely proud that I was and remain a member of the Tiger Force. One of the main reasons I am able to write this message was because of the consumate professionalism and no nonsense approach taken by the members of the Tigers. I was privledged to serve with them. To all my Brother Tigers who came before or after me and are reading this message - Welcome Home, and Thank You for a job well done. In the jungle the Tiger walks in silence!

PFC-E3 RUSSELL THOMAS FORD, KIA- May 2,1967,
101st Airborne, C Company-1/327, 2nd platoon
Killed on May 12,1967 near Duc Pho in Quang Ngai province ---My brother "Russ-Rusty"
This is a proud thanks to all who served with him, and all that served bravely in this "never to be forgotten war." My son, a history teacher/buff researched my brother on this web site, and surprised me with a gift in which I was able to learn more about his time in the war. Growing up, his lean, lanky, legs would jump fences, and charge "into" a pile of guys to defend someone in the neighborhood- it was no surprise to me when he chose the "Eagles"!! For years, I wondered about that time of his life, and who he had served with. Thank you again, Frank Dunlevy, and Gene Ackman- for sharing your friendship with him and the great things he did.

I sailed nineteen days, from oakland, Ca. to RVN, on the USNS Geiger, in January 1967 with the 9th Pathfinder Detachment, from Fort Riley, Kansas.
At Fort Benning, Georgia, January 1966, I completed my fifth Jump from C-119 Aircraft, (Flying Boxcars).
Upon completion of Jump School, I Volunteered for PPMAD, (Parachute Packing, Maintenace, Arieal Delivery. One of the Finest Schools that I ever Washed Out of. I completed four month 's of training, of the six month SFQ Course at Fort Bragg in 1985.
Two months after flunking out, I was promoted to Sergeant First Class, with the 307th Engineer Bn., 82d Airborne. While with the 307th, I made my first "Stand in the Door" jump! We were in C-141 jets, flying in V formation with other C-141's, and I could see the pilot of another jet, below us, taking a picture of me. I remember thinking, "Who is Flying the Plane?" I Remain Allways a Tiger,

Looking for anyone who knew Ernie L. Moore from Michigan. Ernie was with Bravo Company, 2/327th from June 69 until about April 1970. He transferred into our battalion 3/506th just in time for Cambodia. He was KIA May 10, 1970. We didn't know Ernie since he was with us for only days.
We're trying to help his widow contact anyone who might have known Ernie. He had a gold front tooth and blonde hair. I do have a few photos of Ernie. We have located Platoon Sgt. Romo who knew Ernie at 2/327th. Romo also transferred into 3/506th at same time.
I thank you for any assistance. CURRAHEE!!!

I just went thru the Guestbook,...scanning all 37 pages, for entries with my name.
Nothing. I guess it has been a long time since I kept up with Tigers.
I was an in-country Replacement from the 9th Pathfinder Detachment, 9th Infantry Division, Bearcat.
I was on Orders for assignment to C Company, 1/327
But I talked to Captain McGaha, and joined Tiger Force.
The Blade Newspaper,(Ohio), story about us, contained a map of where Tigers were Operating.
From May until December 1967/
We were a Gung-Ho unit. We did what higer up said to do......ie.....On one patrol, we were set up for the night. While on guard shift, we passed the Starlight Scope from man to man. I was sleeping, when I was awaken, and told to be quiet. On a trail in front of us, were 30+ NVA walking in single file. Our Team Leader, SSG Trout, made a decision not to engage, or follow them. Instead, he transmitted to the rear our coordinates, and there direction of travel. SSG Trout requested a Fire Mission, it was denied. He was told to go after them. SSG Trout replied, Wilco. Then he told us that there was no way we were going on a suicide mission. We had less than twenty Men.
We stayed on alert the rest of the night, and followed the trail at first light.
My point in telling this is, people in the rear had lost sight of the situations we were involved in.
We took care of ourselves, and used common sense, as much as we could.
Like with any Sports Team....Our higher Command, did not always have our intrest in mind.
So some members of Tigers were fustrated and felt constrained in our actions.
When the Air Force dropped leaflets, telling the Villagers we were re-locating them, Higher Up told us, that we were to patrol after the re-location, that any one seen in the Village were considered enemy.
We killed some people, that later were idenified as Civilians. At one point I was called forward to use my M-79 on a suspect running into a hut. I put a round thru a window, and a black pajama clad person stumbled out, and fell down. We went and checked,...it was a old lady. We speculated that she was a Mother of a VC, and just did not want to leave the Village. At first I felt bad, but justified that She was not supposed to be there.
I'm rambling,.....Mick

OK Fellow Tigers,...I changed email address's.
When I read from other Tigers about the "Toledo Blade" (Ohio), Report on our actions, I withdrew from my thoughts, and feelings of that time.
Yesterday, Saturday, 23 December, for the first time, I read the Pulitzer Prize series on our Unit.
I E.T.S.ed 10 April 1968, from Fire Base Hawthorne.
Every since then, I have experienced, "Social Aniexty Disorder".....I can't get to close to anyone.
I re-entered the Army in 1974, after I was sure that the War was over. I Retired in January 1992, with Twenty Years of Service.
I work on Fort Hood with Northrop Grumman, as a Range Helper. Its an Honor to work around, and with Soldiers.
When ever I see a Right Sleeve Screaming Eagle Combat patch, I walk up, shake there hand, and say, have you been stationed at Fort Campbell?
Then I say that I've never been to Campbell, I understand that there are two Gym's there named after 1LT James Gardner, and SSG John Gertch.
Then I explain that the two Medal of Honor's that these Troopers were awarded, where the only MOH's given to 1st Brigade, during the entire Vietnam War.
As an Nineteen Year Old Trooper, I learned so much from my Team mates in Tiger Force. We were Tight.
The "Blades" article, has caused me pain.
Absolutly nothing will change my feelings of the Bonding, and History of our fighting Unit.
I am proud to have served with Brave Paratroopers, of the Bastone Brigade.
I wish all Troopers a Vety Merry Chirstmas,....and a New Year, filled with Peace Toward all of Man kind.
With much Love, and Respect.......Mick

Some of from "D" Company- 2/327th which served in 1969/70 are planning on getting together there. I hope many can make it. 6 of us got together in Branson, Mo in June 2006 and had a great time.

I knew many years ago in 1966 when I enlisted in the army and volunteered for the Airborne that I would be part of a special group of men and my only hope was that I would do well and not let them or my family down. I did well with all my training, and while neither being at the top of any particular class I completed everything asked of me.
As most of you know I ended up with 3rd Plt. Cobra/1/327th sometime towards the end of ?66. I was with them for the entire time while Vietnam until medically evacuated to Valley Forge with my third bout of Malaria at the end of my tour.
My biggest scars from my tour didn?t come from bullets or shrapnel, but from the many friends, good friends that I lost, friends I would never see again, my friends, and dreams of our future. It has taken me many years to figure the difference of dreams shared by the men you fought and lived with under hardship conditions and the dreams you dream about with your childhood friends. The latter dreams were just a passing of time while growing up and still invincible and dream the impossible dreams, the dreams in Vietnam with men I loved was more about dreams of struggle to prove to ourselves we would make it and would make it together. More often than I care to remember I discovered it was not to be.
It didn?t take me long after coming back home to see we as soldiers would be the only ones that would care or understand us and what we felt, even old childhood friends that didn?t served look at us a little different. I buried my head in the sand for about 30 years.
I want to fast forward now from my first reunion in Catlett, VA because if you don?t know it, you can always read it on the web site beginnings page.
Now why am I writing all this down? Recently, again as most of you know I had a life threatening situation. A heart attack, and as a result, open heart surgery and 5 by-passes. I was very lucky because it could have gone badly and I could have had a massive final heart attack. I am also very blessed because I have a strong family that loves me and are taking great care of me. But I found out that even after all these years there is still that bond between those I served with, even if not directly the bond was always there. All your prayers, cards, love, and emails have helped to heal me as if you were there with me holding my hand with my family. This is a little mixed up in the telling even for me, but I?m still on some drugs that while help me also keep me a little confused. I am sure that all of you can and will understand my meaning because the as confused as it is the reason I am writing it.
Hawk, got your message about your operation just before sending this, my prayers are with you and you family. From recent past experience you email and mail box will be filled with prayers and good wishes because that?s who we are.
Respectfully,
David J

Respectfully,
David J
Cobra/1/327th

I had the distinct privilege of being the Plt Ldr of the 3rd Plt. of CO A from Oct. 1970 - Aug. 1971. The Company CO was Craig (Smoke) Trumbo for whom it was a privilege to serve. The men from the 3rd Platoon were a terrific group of men who served and sacrificed for each other and volunteered, without question or hesitation, to come to the rescue of comrades in trouble. (Remember the CA into the hot LZ on Easter, 1971). I hope the rest of you made it back to the "real world" after I left.
God Bless you and "Thanks"

A big thank you to Ted Gittinger. I had lost my Jump Mary a few years ago and was devistated. It had not left my neck since 1969. Ted worked with my wife so she could make this veterans day extra special. At breakfast yesterday a replacement was put around my neck thanks to Ted, my wife Joyce (who knew how much it meant to me), and also a big thanks to Hannabil who e-mailed me on how to get a replacement.

Your some special people.

I thank Tim Stubbe for directing me to this website. I served along side of Tim in both Charlie and Echo companies of the 1/327 during 69 and 70. My tour started on Aug.17,1969 and ended a year later. Our best friend, Johnny Compton got us both to volunteer for the sniper team in early 70 and we three served on the same team. Tim and I later put together our own five man teams. I have some great pictures and memories of all my buddies who served with me. Our base camp was at Camp Eagle outside Phu Bai.
I haven't had time to search the site yet but would like to thank who ever took the time and effort to put together this site where we can all share memories and maybe get in touch with those who were part of our past.

"No Slackers"
Over the years, "No Slackers" from both the 1st & 2nd Battalions have ordered from our Currahee Gift Shop/PX. Check out the new designed products for the 1st & 2nd Battalions, 327th just added to the 3-506th Website Gift Shop/PX at www.currahee.org. Shirts, Mugs, Steins, Hats, etc. can be found there. Thank you for your business. Click on the following link, or type in this address to visit the Gift Shop. http://www.cafepress.com/currahee3rd_506
As many of you know, we had men from the 327th come to us when we activated the 3-506th, we had troopers transferred to the proud 327th in Vietnam during the infusion program and after our battalion stood down in May 1971. We also had some of our brothers killed in action while serving with the 327th. I just finished another book titled "My Gift To You", which includes some of the stories of those Currahees who died while serving in the 327th. You can get the book from our Gift Shop.
One last thing. If anyone has any Screaming Eagle Newspapers from their tour in Vietnam and would loan me any issue that I am missing from my collection, let me know. This is a follow up to Rich Rios post of Oct.16, 2006, concerning Ernie Moore(may have had a nickname of Goose). Ernie was assigned to B Co./2/327th in July of 1969 until sometime around March-April, 1970 when he was transferred to our unit(3/506/101st/Co. B). Shortly after his arrival, our unit went into Cambodia (Early May, 1970) and Ernie was KIA on 5-10-70 when Co. B was ambushed by a large NVA unit. Ernie's widow was found this year thru our website and attended a reunion. Unfortuneately, we have not located anybody who knew Ernie per he was with our unit only a short period of time. We are hoping that somebody from your unit will remember him per his widow(Candy Moore Sullins) would like to make contact with any friends Ernie had during his time with 2/327th. He was from Michigan. Another identifying feature was a gold front tooth.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

He transferred into our battalion, 3/506th Infantry, a few weeks prior to battalion combat assault into Cambodia 05 May 70. Moore was KIA'd 10 May in Cambodia. We're trying to help his widow learn more about him thru grunts that might have worked with him. No one from 3/506th remembers him because he was with us for only two weeks and then we got virtually wiped out 10 May 70.

I went to my 1961 high school class reunion Sept.30. This was my second one, first was 20 yrs ago. When we were ready to leave I saw a guy I was in Boy Scouts with, and at the 25 yr. reunion I attended he told me he was a retiring Army finace officer. I started talking to him and found out he was a platoon leader in A/1/327th Nov. 68 - May 69. What a coinsidence; I arrived in country Dec. 1, 68 and was platoon leader in A/2/327th until Apr.69 I had no idea of any others from my El Cerrito High School were in-country. His name is Steve Donaldson. While we talking Bill McGee came over and said he was in-country as (I believe) a radio/communications expert. We also lost
1st L. Esmond Emerson Snell, April 16, 1968.
I am forwarding this site info to Steve.
What a small and intricate world.

Im a 19 year old student writing a paper on why people are claiming to have served in Vietnam when they really dident...In no way am I saying any of you men are claiming this....I would just like to ask anyone to respond as to why they think someone would claim such a thing...from the facts I have just under 3 million men and woman served...But 9 million Americans claimed to have served...That pisses me off and I see my self as to young to even comprehend what you men have been through...So if any of you would like to offer me an opinion on this subject....please..E - mail me...Thank you all for your service...

Looking for anyone who knew Ernest L. Moore, 2/327th, 69 - 70. Ernest was from Michigan.
Any help is appreciated. WELCOME HOME BROTHERS!! CURRAHEE!!

I would like to talk or see any of my platoon, just to touch bases and say hi, how are you doing? Shirley, Sgt Marley, Sgt Clark, Reb, Gilbauex ?(spelling), Lennie Naughton (RTO)., Sgt. Arnold (the best platoon Sgt. ever). We had two snipers, can't remember names, but they were tough, as was everyone in the platoon.

My stepson PFC Joseph J. Duenas served with the 101st, D Co, 1-327 IN. He died March 30, 2006 in Iraq.
I am writing a memorial for him. I want to be sure I understand the meaning of BASTOGNE.
Bastogne played a major role during the Battle of Bastogne in World War II. On December 21, 1944, the German Army surrounded the city, trapping the U.S. 101st Airborne Division and other units. The 101st's defense of Bastogne was credited with slowing up the Germans' push for the port of Antwerp.

Great site. Just found it by accident. I was with HHC 1/327 from Sept 69 till new years day 72. Double Eagle. Spent my time on all the firebases between Da nang and Phu bai as RTO. Also spent 3 months with my best friend in nam Dan ( IGOR )Kulhanick as a radio relay team in the village at Hi van pass. Was on the pad in Da nang when the Chinook with all the cooks went down. I was waiting to get out for Camp Eagle myself that day. Still see dan ocassionally and saw Bill Smikle another buddy from nam at Fort Riley KS just before I got out. If anyone has had contact with Robert ( Charlie ) Pride, Shortround Debois, Edward Earl Edear ( triple E), The Foots, Bill Smikle, Rick Gray, Jim Lala or any of the other RTO's from HHC 1/327 from sept 69 till jan 1 of 72 let me know. Still carry the gold coin in my wallet they gave us that read ABOVE THE REST 1/327th A.I.C.G. on one side and HONOR AND COUNTRY on the back.. I lost my Jump Mary which was inscribed Mary Queen of Angels Defend us in combat. If anyone knows wher to get a replacment let me know.

I am looking for guys that would have been on operation Lamar Plain in
Quang Tri in mid 69.
I was a photo officer with the 221st Signal (company pictorial) and two of
my photographer and I photographed some contact when we joined D company
somewhere in Quang Tri. My photos are at www.azcreative.com/vietport. There
is one shot of a trooper running over the crest of a hill. I was to follow
him shortly thereafter. We were assaulting down a hill and across a rice
paddy which was totally open to enemy fire. There was a brother with a thump
gun that was covering people as they crossed the paddy. I noticed that when
he fired the enemy machine gun would go quiet so I decided I would try for
the berm on the far side the next time he fired. I heard the thump and I was
off and running. I got half way across and hit a slick spot on the dike and
went face down totally exposed. I just laid there until I heard the gunner
fire again and then I made it across the last half. Between taking photos I
wanted to help out with the fight so I decided I would popup and fire a few
rounds. As soon as my head went up I was feeling the conflict between taking
the time to find a target in the tree line and knowing that I was the duck
in the shooting gallery. I got off a couple of shots and my extractor
broke. At first I didn?t realize it was an extractor problem. The adrenaline
high didn?t allow for that kind of detailed analysis. I borrowed a cleaning
rod from the machine gunner and used the weapon muzzle loader style to knock
out the brass after each shot. It only took two shots to convince me this
was a futile activity. With all the activity going on it did not take long
for me to shoot all my film. At that point I had a useless weapon and no
film. The platoon leader asked me if I would lead a group of wounded to the
rear.
We were walked down a shallow ditch and then crawled the rest of the way.
One of the guys was shot in the ass and was worried about his nuts. I was
crawling behind him and he asked me how bad the damage was. Since my face
was almost in his ass I was able to render an accurate report. His family
jewels seemed to be entirely intact, but he lost an ice cream scoop sized
piece of his rear cheek and was bleeding pretty heavily. When we got back to
the rear area, the medics pounced on us. I remember one kept trying to treat
me. Due to air support and ringing ears he could not hear my protests that I
was fine and would he please treat the guy shot in the ass. Then I realized
that the blood from the guy?s butt had been flipped by the grass onto my
face and the medic thought I had a head wound.
All this was brought to mind today when I was in a book store and picked
up a book on the 101st written by two Brits called 101st Airborne In
Vietnam: The Screaming Eagles. The authors are Michael Sharpe and Simon
Dunstan. On page 61, I saw two of my company D photographs both showing the
thump gunner.
If you are in contact with any of the company D folks please as them to
have a look at www.azcreative.com/vietport. They may also be interested in
www.daspo.com and www.combatcamera.org.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I currently reside in the Arizona high desert and I enlisted in Seattle, Wa. in 1965. My incountry dates- June 1967-May 1968.. hhc/2/327th originally assigned to heavy weapons platoon. Attached to Hawk LRRP as a Forward Observer/RTO. This is your buddy"slick". I stuck it out until a trip to the ashau with the Hawks in may 68 ended my military career. Went through P school in Phan Rang june 67. Humped all over nam with some of the best airborne soldiers God ever created.
During my time with the LRRPS my call ID was Hawk 1-4. This is some of what I remember:
1. the 10,000lb bomb that was discovered while we were digging in, and the ultimate "HUMBUG" blast that wounded five troopers, myself included and a crashed Huey full of c-4.
2. The NVA officer that was captured by the Hawks and later attempted to escape while I was on guard. A claymore saved my stripes.
3. Setting up an ambush in the cemetary in Hue.
4.The all night fire fight at the saigon airstrip during TET. we held our position with the help of an abandoned D21 catapillar.
5. Having an entire mountain catch on fire as a result of a smoke grenade. This occurred while we were maintaining perimeter security for a new t.o.c. nowhere to go. all of our gear up in smoke, The LT catches a sniper round in the face. he makes it.
6. I was wounded while on patrol with the Hawks in the ashau valley May 31, 1968, I saw the ambush coming, but it was too late. I'm sorry, Vince DeFilipps-NO SLACK

I just got a call from SSg. Jerry Norris' daughter the other night. I was able to tell her what a good god fearing man her daddy was. She was only 6 weeks old when he died. She was never told a thing about him, and once had to break into a locked box to even see a photo of him.
We served in the 506 at Campbell for a few years .I did get to meet up with in VN just before he was KIA. I am sorry that after almost 40 years I can't rember if it is Jerri with a G or J.?

To all Cold Steel Members Past and Present. I would like to thank you all for your support and prayers, while this great company continues to write the history that so many have before us. We have been in country for 9 months now and have been very successful in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our success has come at a price, with the loss of some soldiers. They were great americans, and friends for life. Russ and Faye Thanks for everything. We won't be there this year for the Reunion, but Can count on us next year. Once again Thank YOU ALL. I just found this web site. I want to thank you guys for establishing and maintaining it. I have a question that maybe some of my brother abu vets can answer. Sometime in 67 we liberated a prisoner of war camp somewhere in the central highlands. What I remember most were the tiger cages and the filth the viet prisoners were kept in. Also, I remember they killed a pig and ate it with very little cooking. If any of you can fill in the details I would appreciate it.
That coupled with Mothers day hill and our operations in Tam Ky a memories that for some reason pesist.
One other question- has any one heard from John Wayne Boatwright, timmons, smitty, doc ainsworth or boattella. If so, please let me know how to contact them.
Above the Rest,
Gabby

My grandfather, Alvis B. Faust, served in the 327th during WWII, and received the purple heart and bronze star. I'm trying to find anyone who would of served with him, or more information on the unit. Thanks for the help!

Erik thank you for your posting on the website. Your military career will be ending soon but we know that you will always be a Cold Steel Cobra at heart just as others before you.. Thank you for your years of Service and most especially for being the 1SG that we will always think of when we see or speak of Cold Steel. We wish you and Tina a wonderful life in your retirement and remember that Crossville is not that far from Missouri and we will see you there next June. Above the Rest

Cold Steel 7

Hi guys,
In case you don't remember, I was 3rd platoon leader in Abu - 1/327 from June '67 until around Jan-Feb '68. I went back to become ABU xo just before Artavia fell. I am in contact with "Gabby" Thompson who turned me on to your great site. If any of you are still out there and feel like talking, please drop me a line. I miss you all.

Above the Rest,
Gabby

Paula and Melissa have gathered many items together with the help of a large group of military supporters and mailed them to the Cobra's and have helped to keep the morale of this unit high due to their support. Paula had requested names to send packages to from Fred Brander who her husband served with in Vietnam and ever since have been faithful in their support. Their daughters collected many Girl Scout cookies and they were very welcome by these young soldiers who serve our country and are so happy to hear from someone in the States who care about their morale and well being. Wild Bill asked me to post this, so doggone it, here it is.
This message from Sgt E-5 Bill Smith "ABU" 1/327th 67-68 "SERTS" 68-69
This SITREP goes out to all the "ABU" who were with A-CO 1/327th from 1967-1972 in the NAM. Those of you who were with ABU know the story of Joe Artavia. The city of San Mateo ,and Joes sister Linda .who later married Joes Platoon leader Lt. Steve Patterson. Steve was wounded the same day that Joe was KIA. Joe had written to his sister Linda in San Mateo sometime around Christmas of 67. ABUs, A-Co. morale was at the lowest it had ever been. Joe asked Linda if she would go to the Mayor and the City Council of San Mateo and see if the people of his Home Town of San Mateo would maybe just write to the guys in A-Co. Linda did just that and the end result was that the City Council and the citizens of San Mateo stepped up to the Plate and went "ALL THE WAY" by adopting A-Co. Sadly and to a great loss to us all. OurBrother Joe Artavia met his "RENDEZVOUS with DESTINY " three months later and was KIA in Thua Thien , March 24th 1968. We all know that in those days of war protests and the general publics attitude towards the war . Adopting a company of Airborne Infantry was not the most popular thing to be doing. The City of San Mateo and it's great citizens only saw that we were hurting and came to support us when we needed that the most. God Bless San Mateo,Calif. Joe Artavia and Linda. We started receiving Care Packages and mail from total strangers on a regular basis. Those of us who were there in 68 knew what that meant to all of us! The City of San Mateo sent us all invitations to come to San Mateo ,if we wanted to, once we arrived back in "THE WORLD".as the Citys Honored Guests. Those of you who did ,know and remember what that was like! The City of San Mateo sent us all The Key To The City, and special Medallions. The City requested permission from the Army to send Linda to Vietnam to bring us gifts and to see the troopers of "ABU" They finally recieved permission and Linda came to Vietnam in 68. Jim Grainger and I were,by then on our second tour at "SERTS" known to all those that went through it as "P-School. It had been moved from Phan Rhang to Bien Hoa. We were there as instructors in 68-69. We had wanted to return to possibly help save as many Brothers as we could with better preperation prior to going North. We were summoned to meet Linda after she arrived in Bein Hoa and honored with orders to escort her North to Phu Bai and out to the firebases to meet with the ABU troopers she had come all that way to see. In 1972 when "ABU" left Vietnam. The City of San Mateo asked for and recieved permission to have the Company come to San Mateo as a unit. They held a parade through town and turne out in mass to honor our service and Scarafices made in Vietnam. The company was treated like Royalty ! Since then, Linda has worked tirelessly to carry on her promise to her brother Joe and carry on the legacy of the adoption of 'ABU". Linda set up "ASA" , Americans Supporting Americans. She has worked all these years to find cities that would be willing to step up to the plate and adopt units that were going into harms way or not! She has been encouraging many cities to adopt units from all Branches of the Service and do for them what San Mateo had done for A-Co. all those years ago and still does to this day ! "ASA" is a NON -Profit organization and Linda has flown all over this graet country of ours to meet with City Mayors to encourage them and their citizens to adopt units. She has done this at her own expense and with the help of private donations. My fellow "ABU BROTHERS" . It is time for us to step up to the plate to help Linda and show our appreciation not only for us ,but what she is still doing for our young Brother Warriors today. Linda was just recently summoned to Washington D.C. to meet with President Bush to be Honored for all that she has done for Military units over all these years. AWESOME !!! I come to you and ask that you join with me in donating to this Great Organization and show our appreciation for not only what they have done for us ,but also what they continue to do for so many today I have personally set aside part of my VA Disability (70% PTSD) to be donated each month to this Great Organization and what it does for so many of our Brothers in Uniform today. My Brother "ABU" Warrior Brothers won't you join with me and show our thanks and appreciation for all that has been done for us by sending your donations to this great cause. Please send all donations to: Americans Supporting Americans P.O. Box 574 Pacific Palisades , CA. 90272

Looking for anyone who served in Ashau Valley, PhuBi area during Spring and Summer of 1966. We lost a very special soldier there, May 18, 1966, and would like to know more about the area, i.e. the bigger picture surrounding all that occurred there. The soldier's name was PFC Michael Paul Randall of Los Angeles. He was a Radio Operator assigned to a Ranger Battalion in that area. Unfortunately, that is the extent of my information. Thanks ever so much for anything contributed to this effort.
