My father served in the 101st in 67-68 in Vietnam. I was born while he was in 'nam so I don't know which battalion, but I'm desperately looking for his service records. He has since passed away of a devastating cancer. We are 5th generation Army (except me, as a girl), but my son is just getting started and I'm trying to put together all the service records for my father, grandfather, great-grandfather, etc for my son. I cannot find my father's info. Can you help?

Hi, my name is Mitchell Errebo, I was a first cousin of Butch Kobbeman's. I have found another website with "Butch Kobberman" on the roster. It was spelled "Kobberman" but I assume it was spelled wrong. I know he served in the Tiger Force in 67'-68' but know really nothing else. He passed away in 1990. If you can give any insight of your service with him it would be much appreciated. I am from Lincoln, Kansas where Butch grew up. Thanks Mitchell Errebo

This is a rough time of year for myself and many of my Veteran Brothers that served with me in Vietnam. A lot has been happening the past couple of months to cause me to make this tribute to 12 Vietnam brothers from A-Co, 1/327, 101st Infantry Division that were either injured or killed on December 24, 1970. I will be posting a few names each day until Christmas eve at 5:45 when I traditionally light a candle to remember those that fell that evening.
On Dec. 24, 1970, Alpha company was deployed in the Jungle around Firebase Bastogne in I-Corps. There would be a 24 hour cease fire observed for the Christmas holiday. The enemy had already shown that they would use these times to launch offensives hoping to catch our guard down. So all firebases were protected by various Infantry units stationed around them as security. Our Co. was 3 platoons strong. Each platoon took up positions along a ridgeline that was very dence jungle. The 2nd platoon was our most experienced platoon at the time and so a new platoon leader was assigned to them so he could cut his teeth and learn from the platoon of the things that were never taught in infantry school. Each platoon was setting up what we called our Night Defensive Fire positions around our NDP (night defensive perimeter). We were setting predetermined coordinates for artillary support to be able to be called in should the enemy decide to strike in the middle of the night. 2nd platoons new platoon leader did not follow the proper procedures in the field and called a howitzer 105, high explosive artillery round on top of his and the platoons postion. There were 12 injured and 9 killed. within 3 days there would be 3 others that would die to leave 12 dead and 9 severely wounded. This incident has been in our memories for a very long time and those that survived that event and those that had to do the clean up of the incident on Christmas Day will never forget. Recently I have been in contact with the gun crew that fired the artilery round that struck 2nd platoon. They have been suffering for 41 years with thinking that they killed those men without knowing all the details. Alpha Company of 1/327 never blamed the Arty guys and I want them all to know that we understand their grief and pain but it is time for healing now.
There are much more details to the story of pre and post incident but for this purpose it is not necessary to post it here. I will name 4 of the young men that were lost that day. It is our job to Remember them for giving their all.

To Rod Smith.
Rod. You might want to check your facts on your Chinook crash report. That chinook crash has been well documented and recorded with the names of 34 that parished that day. I take offense to your light hearted references to a mission gone bad by OUR brothers. They were by no means rear echalon or cooks and clerks. They were A co. 1/327 Grunts. The company commander along with several others that I served in the field with just weeks before the accident were on that bird. If you don't have facts then don't post. Look in the stories on the 327 website here for the facts. You will find the chinook crash of Thanksgiving day 1971. And sir you owe an apology to A company and gratitude that you were not on that bird that was shot down by enemy fire.
Above the Rest means integrity above all.

In life, a chain of events effects one person's life while having a profound effect on another unrelated person or persons.
The best I can remember:
Sept to Nov 1971; It started to rain
I was in "C" co 1st of the 327th airborne we were grunts By Nov. we were comming off some mission out of DaNang operating off a very small Fire Base (Maud) in the mountains You could see the China sea to the East. One night we watched as the fire base to the West blew their final protective fire. What happened? Captain Casey warned we would probably be overrun.
On Nov. 26 we started to move back to Camp Eagle through DaNang. A friend and I were almost late for the formation on the tarmac pad at DaNang. I ran down the steps to fall in. My friend lagged behind to pick up something.
It was grunts first (I guess out of respect) on the choppers. We loaded to the sound of "Gentlemen you know the drill. No animals. no live amo. Keep standing and move forward!! Move forward!!" There was mumbling, then a bark or a yelp. Someone had a dog. The next order was "Unload men." The rear eshalon with the clerks and cooks was then loaded in our place and the Chinok gaggle lifted off with a whop whop whop sound and monsoon clouds in the background. My friend and the dog had sent all those mothers son's to their early grave on the side of a mountain stream just west of the China Sea. We were left standing in the drizzle to fly back later as punishment for dog violation. We waited at least 3 hours before we were told the Chinook and the men were MIA. I often think about the heartaches and tears that dog caused the mothers, fathers, wives and people dear to their hearts.

PFC Dennis Patrick Molese died in battle on Mother's Day Hill on 14 May 1967. He arrived in country on 8 Apr 1967. He was a member of the 101st. He was airborne. He was very proud of that. Guess he was a cherry or FNG, but we all had to start somewhere.
The real old guys (see WWII) would say he was a hero. The toughest thing is that it doesn't sound like anybody knew him over there. I never did combat, so should probably just shut up.

"It was such a senseless war. I lost my nephew Michael Campbell. He was only 26 years old. Sad." The politics of war never justify the loss of good men on either side. Our hearts will always bleed for those who never came back. We have to look to those who survived to make any sense of any war. Warriors are a rare and strange breed. I would say they are a nation's most valuable resource. They are not made; they are born, and then trained. One never knows if he is one until his fist fire fight, and then he will never be the same.
Recently I became aware of a family situation that required all the training and heart that warriors possess. I thank God that at seventy years of age; that the warrior heart still ticks and like Wild bill would say, "Gether done!" In the getting done, no warrior stands alone. I know this all too well as I spent my whole basic load, set off claymores, and everything I could get my hands on. I was surrounded by my opposition and things looked pretty bleak. I was about to be over-run. Then my sweet and lovely wife calls for artillery support, and additional ground troops. "On the way, wait" I waited; by the grace of God. Lawyers:,Olsen, Brown,Meyers, and Paralegals, Trish, investigator Don et al; mapped out the Operation. Professor Meyers and Maryland his right hand, hit the airways with airial attacks. Then the artillery came. Jim Mann hammers the Montana grid square. No slack and above the rest ground troops Yankee Jim and a Platoon of Gung Ho brothers stormed the enemy. Just when the reinforcements changed the tide, and the battle seemed no longer in question; a Marine (Tom Brennan) fought his way to the battlefield and extracts my incarcerated six. The battle goes on; but the opposition knows they are in for a fight.
I don't know if there is any sense to war. Jesus said "You have war because of greed" I guess that's true, even down to two siblings fighting. Someone wants their way, and justice demands that they be stopped. Then is the clarion call for warriors from every phase of life to step forward and do battle. For it is in the the heat of battle that a human heart is forged into a heart of gold. Your Nephew had a golden heart, and every veteran feels the call to demonstrate that heart, every time they stand for that which they defended. Be proud of that young man to whom we salute, with every breath of freedom we possess.
Last night I sat in a isolation lock down POD in a Montana Jail. I hear over the loud speaker, "Wainscoat! Roll her up. You're outta here!" Thirty minutes later I stood looking at a Bondsman and a stranger. You have been bonded out he said. By whom? By him, the stranger: but he was no stranger; he was a brother in arms, another veteran with a golden heart.
As I sit here at the hotel computer in Great Falls, awaiting the court's decision as to whether I leave Cascade County; I want to thank every individual and couple who have come to my mom's, my daughter's, my family's rescue, and still continue the fight for Justice and Equity. You all have my family's eternal gratitude and prayers. Scoat, over and out.

I don't remember but had to identify Troy Hayden having just arrived in field with him a few days prior. It was our first firefight, with same 60 team. Had to research virtual wall to find Troy's name. Did not remember.

Marshal G Miller was my best friend in Vietnam. He was killed while on a mission June 1971, 40 yrs ago. I was not there when it happened. I always felt a big loss from his death so I set out along time ago to find his grave, which through a fellow ABU Brother, I did find in Phoenix, Az. where Marshal was from. Then last year, Marshal's cousins, Teresa Johnson and Tina Carey contacted me. They had information to share with me regarding Marshal. Then a couple of months ago Marshal's Fiance Denise Dupont contacted me and we met with Teresa and Tina and had a very good visit remembering Marshal.
On Veterans day this year I was able to complete my mission of remembering and honoring my friend and Brother by placing an important award of the Combat Infantry Badge and a 101st Airborne medallion on his headstone.
All of this information to help complete my mission came from a very valuable source. The 1/327, 101st Airborne Website. I will always be grateful to my Brothers that started and continue to keep the website up and running.
Thanks Paul, Mike, David and the others.

I was the "Doc" with B battery 2/320th Arty 1-66 to
11-66. I was there when we were over-run June 7th, 1966. After being violently attacked in the middle of the night, actually got hand to hand on more than one occasion, it was a relief when the "Tiger Force" finally arrived to help out after daybreak. A big thanks guys. I wish I could remember the name of one of the Tiger Force guy I got to meet back in 1994 on a Upward Bound trip to The Wall. It was nice to get some more pieces of the puzzle. I am still proud of receiving a battle field promotion from Gen. Westmoreland in the same location where we had been over run just a few days prior, and within feet of where I had been wounded. Damn lucky to have survived that battle for sure !

I am trying to find information on Kenny Alfstad (PFC Kenneth Orville Alfstad) of B Co, 2nd Bn, 327th Inf, 101st Abn Div. He was KIA Oct 3, 1966 in Vietnam. I would like information from friends, or people that knew him during his basic at Fort Ord (B-1-3), his AIT and airborn training and his service in Vietnam (Where located etc.).
Ken was only in country for 3 months before he was killed. I knew him before he was called up, but never was able to get together with him before he went for training. I was already in Vietnam myself with A Co, 2nd Bn, 27 Inf. Reg., 25th Inf. Div. (Wolfhounds) and I was never able to get to see him before he was killed. He was 19 and only had three weeks to go till he turned 20. We were going to try and meet up on an R&R; once he was in country long enough, but he never made it. An information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Thank You.

I am the daughter of Henry Rael who passed on 01/07/2010.He was 101st Airborne 327th. I guess writing this I hoped to find a sense of peace because the war still is taking from us it took my dad at 61. I miss him everyday and feel so cheated. I want you to know though what a hero my dad was to us. For 31 years he suffered and never once complained. Agent Orange took my brothers legs and my dads life. He went to work everyday never abused us never drank never did drugs he put food on the table and a roof over our heads. He never took a handout from anyone to raise my handicapped brother but busted his ass (he even had a crack down the middle as he would say) for his family with two slipped disc in his back. He then lost both right lobes of his lung to cancer in 1992 and five days out of surgery his stubborn butt walked so he could see me graduate. He lived with diabites and hep c., staph infections, degenerative bone disease, arthritis, etc. He also had severe ptsd and a rare bacteria in his blood. He was so angry for all the years he fought to have the US government acknowledge the damage they did but couldn't get disability or aide until he was diagnosed with ptsd. Being proud and strong he was livid and insulted he had to live with this stigmata of being crazy. I used to joke he had the papers to prove it so we could do something like rob a bank and he get away with it cause we had papers he was nuts., My dad fought for his life everyday but at the end he was tired. My dad used to say he was dying didn't I get it I used to tell him well get on with it being my father's daughter it was our way. I asked him one time why he always joked about dying he said because I would take it the hardest but had to be the strongest for everyone else. When he found out his liver turned to cancer he told me I'm getting on with it you going to cry. I told him no they have not said war over so until then deal with it. They only gave him a year and I will be damned he beat it and I did not let him see me cry. It was a sepsis that took him in the end, the bacteria in his blood he got sprayed with in the Agent Orange but even then he fought. My dad lived with survivors guilt and he used to tell me he didn't know if he was the lucky one or the unlucky since he lived and and didn't die in niam. Why didn't God take him but everyone else he cared about. There was not a day he was haunted by the war. My dad always held eveyrone else up and at the end we held him. I remember he told me he was ready to die and I told him I wanted him to live and fight he told me sometimes a good retreat is better than a bad stand and he was tired and weak and was in so much pain and couldn't enjoy life anymore so I told him my world would end but I would help him and it was ok. For all his pain he just closed his eyes and with peace went with God. For all this was his reward a beautiful and merciful death. I didn't cry at the funeral or rosary because he taught me to be strong and this was my honor to him. He got a 21 honor salute. The Irony of Wars.
On Nov. 26, 1971 (Thanksgiving day) a Chinook helicopter took off from Phu Bai airbase in
the I Corps region of Vietnam with 30 members of the elite 1/327th Infantry Brigade of the 101st Airborne Infantry Division and a flight crew of 4. A short time later there was an SOS from the pilot and the radio went blank. The Chinook was shot down by a single rocket propelled grenade by an enemy force. All 34 aboard were killed. It took 3 days just to find them due to weather and 2 more just to get to the Chinook because of the dense terrain. It appeared that their may have been survivors but the enemy had made sure they were dead. It was a site and situation that would make ANY 20 year old young man to have nightmares for the rest of his life. And for that, There was no news report of the loss. There was no sadness from a nation for the loss of these soldiers. There were no welcome homes for warriors and survivors of the Vietnam War. But there were protesters, politicians, movie stars and even past war veterans that made sure that the warriors of the Vietnam War felt the blame, guilt and shame for what they had to endure during that time of their young impressionable lives. At least now we can feel the sorrow of the family's and the other soldiers for this loss as we Vietnam Veterans Know what that loss means. There are over 58,200 names on a marble wall in Washington DC that does not let us forget.
My how a society can change in a short period of time for it's warriors. Thank God we can.
God Bless our men and women defending our Freedom and Liberty and may God accept every one of the brave Soldiers that perished in this incident.
accounting of this incident is under stories on Inside the Wire.

I may well go to hell for saying this but I'll do it; I'm sure that hell will be there one way or the other. At what point in time did we become friendly with what I still refer to as the enemy. At any given time they would have killed us and the reverse is true. Most of those reading this know what went on "over there". I watch specials on the tube about vets returning to the "Nam" and re-living their experience..wow. To each his own. Given the chance, I would rather have a shit covered punji stick stuck up my ass and not have a dust off within two days flight time. I guess there is no milk of human kindness in my veins but I do not understand. As things turn out I find that my time there was at once the worst time of my life and possibly the best thing that ever happened to me. I spent my time there with some of the finest people I have ever known and I don't mean to offend anyone but I felt the need to speak my mind on this and I just did. Bless all of those that returned and especially those that did not.

The NVA was at the Trung Luong Battle as well as the attack on Hill 86. Let me know how I can attach them. Thanks

I just spent the last month (June) in Vietnam. I visited several areas including Tuy Hoa. I was with B Company 2/327 from June-December, 1966. I was able to interview several South Vietnamese Soldiers and civilians who were in the area during the Battle at Trung Luong, June 19th-23rd. I was put in contact with a formed NVA who fought at the Trung Luong Battle as well as the attack on Hill 86 in September 17th 1966. He was a private with the 18th B (PAVN) Regiment. I am the mist of writing my next book about the Trung Luong battle. To my 2/327th colleagues: I have pictures of Trung Luong 1-2-3, Hill 258 and of Hill 86(which is completely overgrown) I will place excerpts of my writing on line for those that are interested. It was quite an experience to speak to an NVA, now retired Captain due to wounds, who was involved in both attacks and has a very good memory of both. One of his comments was about the heavy rain that allowed the sapper unit to come up Hill 86 undetected. 2 companies of the 18th B regiment and 1 Main force Unit (30th from the 302 Pavn Division were involved in the attack, according to his recollection. More later.

I was with A CO 1/327 Inf (ABU) 1970 to 1971 and I read the story about the eve 24th Dec. and I was there also when the HE rounds landed, I was an RTO for the 1st platoon, I heard check fire, check fire we been hit, cpt Lampkin said what is your stat, the green LT said we have KIA and wounded, the CP was with the 3rd platoon so the cpt said that they were going to there NDP to help with the wounded, which made sence cause the the CP and 3rd platoon had there own medic which would be 3 total to help the 2nd platoon with the wounded and cut LZ to make space so the coppers could come in and carry them out, the KIA were left there over nite in body bag and ponchos until daylight cause it was already dark, there no light when your in the jungle, that night there were 9 KIA and 12 wounded but 3 died later, I remember the service the we had for them on firebase Bastogne, I still know the names and faces, one of them I got to know well, his name was Larry Heen, I was suppose to go with him to the 2nd Platoon but got picked to go to the 1st platoon, I remember at the service when they said his name they said that his wife had just given birth to a newborn son, I had only been in country a couple of months, Larry had been there 6+ months which they call over the hump time, I was glad to have know him even if it was for a short time it seem longer, i'll never forget those guy, I just hooked up with Mil Thorton on this web site, I read the stories and said I know this guy and he rememberd me, and has help me a great deal on some issue that I needed advice on, and will keep in touch with him, they called me (VAL) RTO for the 1st platoon and the CP under sarg. In response to David Scherzer's inquiry reagarding Dan Carr, Jessie Sanchez etc. I finally "surfaced" in 1999 (bought a house, put the ruck down). By the way Dave, I do remember you and thankyou for your service, God knows I'da been dead 10 times over had you not had the balls to hump that gun day in and day out!! So Carr found me in 99 by hi tech computer gibbery (probably my service number popped up on the house deed), he invited me out to his house with his wife and 2 children that summer, been flying out there for 7-10 days every summer since. Got a hold of Capt. Piel and he even came out a couple of times, somebody that Dan came "in-country" with (4/69)will be there this year, his first name is Charley. Any hoo, I too have been looking for guys, sometimes I'll pursue it for a couple of months then lose track. Right now I am looking for Terry "Red Ant" Wilson, Bob Hannah etc Lutz, Big Daddy, MacKnight, Angel. I am retired right now (can't believe I've lived this long, it's the longest I have ever lived). Untill I hear from you Dave.

In response to Richard Moffett's entry date 5/23 this year. A unit of the 2/327 (Bravo company)were assigned to riff the hills west of "Camp Eagle" in way early 1969 (can't rememer the date much less the month but I think it was February '69)As we were ascending the highest hill in the area to make our NDP, there were a dozen or more 122 mm rockets launched right over our heads, man that shit was LOUD, everybody intially thought we were dead for a split second before we realized that it was out going stuff. We NDP'ed right there and heard over the horn that one of Eagle's ammo dumps had been hit.At sunup six Huey's came in and airlifted 3rd platoon to the top of the hill, they worked their way down while the rest of the company cut trail up. The NVA fired this things off of bamboo rails and had deedee maued out of the area. Never did hear what ammo dump because that day they airlifted the battalion into the A-Shaw Valley. So Richard, I would have to assume that what we heard as ammo dump being hit was more likely than not the fuel dump that you alluded to in your entry. Welcome home brother!!

I came to this site to try to locate a lost friend, Eddie Dutchie, Cobra Co. 1/327. I'm so happy that you have an address listed for him and I'm hopeful that it is a good listing so I can get in touch with him after all these years. Eddie and I went through Basic, AIT, Jump School and were at Ft. Campbell together until we received our orders for Vietnam. Eddie was sent to the 1/327 and I was sent to A Troop 2/17 Airborne Cav. I did 2 tours with A Troop was wounded in a battle in the A Shau and evacuated home. I soon 1049'd back to the 173d where I volunteered for E 20th LRP which became C Co 75th Inf Ranger. As much as I loved my 101st I kept my jump pay by going to the 173d. - Hopefully I can make commo with Eddie and we can get together and reminisce old times in the Army together. God bless all here.

After the war officially ended he stayed on in Bertches Garden and was assigned as the Athletic Director to organize athletic events to occupy the troops who were awaiting return to the states.
Any info or anybody with info on him would be gratefully appreciated. My dad recently died and his 101st airborne ball cap was aside his casket at the funeral. He was also in the 82nd.
Thank you.

Those that remember June 22 1971. Alpha Co. 1st platoon, 1/327 and the murder of Marshall Miller.
I have been in contact with his cousins in Phoenix.
The person that murdered him is Oscar Martinez. He served approx 20 years in Leavenworth. Not sure how I feel about that. Marshall was my best friend in country and when I went on R&R; I talked him into taking over my radio for the platoon leader. If I wasn't able to get anyone I wasn't going to get to go on R&R.; That R&R; was when I married my wife 40 years ago. I was one day away from returning when Martinez locked and loaded on Marsh over some C-Rats.
I really want to find someone that was there to talk with them to find out exactly what happenend that day. For me and Marsh's family.

In July 1971 on FSB Binh Dinh my unit (B Btry 2/11) and a platoon from the 327th occupied this bald hill about 3km from Vegal. The unit had their mortar platoon with them and one of the tubes exploded killing several soldiers, two which were leaving the next few days going home. I have pictures of the platoon (before the explosion), and several members of the unit, they flew a Texas Flag above their Fire Direction Center.
If anyone knows of any surviving family members who would like pictures I would consider it an honor to send them the pictures that I have. If its any help we got hit by a Typhoon the night before the incident and it rained like it was going to turn the entire valley into a lake.
I have approximaly 20 pictures of the area around the small fire base, and many of those pictures include the great infantry soldiers from the 327th that provided us security.
I remain, a Redleg, tried and true. But there is nothing like "No Slack". They saved my gun sections bacon, on more than one occasion.
Respectfully, Command Sergeant Major (Retired) H.E. Lewis, Field Artillery.

I would like to pay special tribute to Achoe and Holler and the many others who did not get to come home. Having just had the opportunity to talk to some of the guys I was in Nam with, it made me feel so good. I sincerely hope some day we all get to see each other again.
