Greetings to one and all, got back from visiting the soldiers at Delta Co 1-327th In in Ft Campbell Ky. Spent a few hours with them, these are bunch of good kids, they are professional in every sense of the word. Have looked into their eyes and saw the tiger and the compassion in their hearts. We should all be proud of the way they handle themselves and all they could say to me was that they were following in our footsteps. They are our pride and our warriors of the 21st century. They are true to their beliefs and they knew what they were fighting for, each other and for you and me. A big hearty Airborne and Air Assualt Sir!

Hello to all of you wonderful veterans. Thank you so much for fighting for American freedom. I stand proud each and every day that I say the pledge of allegiance. You men are a bunch that you just don't see anymore. I am the granddaughter of SSG Frederick J. Tregaskes and he was in Vietnam in 1966 until around October of 1967 I think.

I would like some information about Vietnam, any thing you would like to share with me, please do. I am in 10th grade at West Shamokin High School in PA, and my social studies class will be studying the Vietnam war pretty soon. If you want to send me anything, please do. My email address is kimberlytregaskes@yahoo.com .

I want to say thank you for fighting for me. Thank you for helping my grandfather out of that jungle in Vietnam. If you know him, please send me an email. I want to know what happened to him in Vietnam.

Pap, SSG Frederick J. Tregaskes is still alive, he is well. He was inducted into the Soldiers and Sailors Hall of Valor in Pittsburgh Pa a few years ago.

Please send me some information.

And once again, thank you for my freedom.

KIM

I was in Mortar Battery of the 327th and got out just before Viet Nam in March of 1963. I can't find anything about Mortar Batter on this site. Did they disolve it for Viet Nam? Does anybody know?

She wanted to contact people who knew her dad, Ssg. Gerry Norris KIA May 14, 1967.

I served with Gerry from the rank of Pvt to Sgt with B 506 Airborne Battlegroup at Campbell, and saw him later in VN, when I commanded the Lurps. Our last meeing was just a few days before he died. Her dad is mentioned in Rey Martinez's book Six Silent Men Book 1. If someone can foward this info to her it would be helpful, please feel free to contact at any time to gather more info about me before you pass my name and number on to her.

Thank You,
Dan McIsaac

My umpteenth visit to the site...great job, guys. Recently moved to Santa Fe, NM, from Washington State, and have visited with ex-Tiger and friend Dan Clint and his wonderful wife Terresa. Dan is one of my favorite "unaffiliated" writer's on the VN experience. He speaks of our experiences from his heart and soul. Ran into Gary Epperley, my point-man, and talked with Randy LaFaver, best-ever RTO, from '69/'70. Our world is so full of many brave and great people such as these. I was PL for 2nd/C/1/327th (Sept 69 - March 70) and then Tigers (March 70 - July 70). Best wishes to all.

I hope everyone watched "The Siege of Fire Base Ripcord" on War Stories. They said that the media wasn't allowed to cover the battles in 1970. That's why there was so little footage and so few photographs. I said it before, nobody cared about Vietnam in 1970. We were an annoyance. The ARVN and war protestors got more coverage. Jane Fonda and John Kerry got more coverage. The war in I Corps was far from over in 1968. It didn't end in 1970 when I left either. 1971 was statistically the most dangerous year to be a chopper pilot. What must those men have gone through? Erick

Keep up the Great work on this sight. It has helped me find some lost buddies and last night I put another piece of my puzzle together.I talked to Steve(ie) Pohancek (kia Dec 70) cousin. I have had a picture of him and could not remember his name until I saw his picture listed and got in touch with Welby Schrader. Hearing him pronounce his name and telling me he grew up in Chicago made things click. I am still looking for buddies I was with 1/327th A co 3rd plt RTO Jan 70 to Feb 71. Welcome "HOME ALL VETS".

I was a medic/OR Tech that helped your guys after the Bastogne shelling in December 1970. I had been playing Santa Claus for the patients and medics and was called to the intake/emergency room to help with a large number of your guys that had been torn up pretty bad. I saw lots of young healthy men with their limbs blown off, many internal injuries from head to toe. We helped save many lives but were unable to save some. I promise you we all did our best for each and every one of you. For those of you who have survived 30 +years , well done. Keep up the good work!

I was assigned on a FO team with the Tigers in May 67 for about three months, then to A 1/327. Never seen any atrocities being committed. Just returned for a short vacation from Kosovo where I am with the International Police Force. I always counted my stay with the 1/327 as the best. I also returned for a second tour in 70-71. ATR

I came in as a replacement medic at Dak To and I went into the field assigned to Abu & Cobra Co's. I remember a guy named Killian getting killed and because of the similarity of our names people thought it was me. I recall Sgt. Fields getting shot in the arm and Joe Sumler and I both worked on treating his wound and he died inspite of our efforts from what seemed to be a very superficial wound. I recall some action in Phan Thiet, when two guys on a M-60 machine gun were both wounded, one was Peavey, but I forget the other's name. Both recovered and returned to action. I would like to get in touch with Jim Echols of Atlanta.

To Jamie from Michigan....I'm eagerly waiting to hear from you again. Sorry that I missed your last call, the one you made days before your deployment, but I did get your message. I've been really upset that I missed that call and have been thinking about you EVERY day since then. I'm hoping that maybe you might see this and know that you have been in my thoughts. Hoping to hear from you soon. I graduate from nursing in May, so please don't wait too long. I will be leaving PA by the end of this summer...going to South Dakota. Again, I'm really anxious and very much wanting to hear from you....

Grunts, boots, airtroops, groundpounders, Infantrymen.Listen up. The men in the rear echolon jobs we owe our lives to. They kept us supplied, sent us mail, logostics, troop movements, equipment repair. keep us in ammo, artillary, airstrikes. Got us water, medivaced out our wounded under intense fire, keep us running like a smooth green machine. Those who would call you REMF's or other names are not brothers in the true sense of the calling. I for one appreciate you. When we needed you , you answered our calls. Most men in Vietnam never saw close quarter combat, firefights, sustained battles but you were there, you worried and cared about us. You did not let us down. Thank You rear echolon Troops, for without you no infantryman would have or could have survived. Vietnam Veterans and Brothers All.

Yankee Jim, your comment of Christmas at Nouc Ngot, immediately brought back my memory of Christmas 68 on Los Banos. I had just taken over 3rd platoon, one of the men's mother had sent an 18"-24" christmas tree with lights. We set it up in the platoon command bunker, used a claymore wire buried in the dirt and ran it to the artillery generator and spliced it in. What a thrill for the members of the platoon. That mother made a lot of guys happy. I'll never forget the rats jumping across my stomach when I was trying to get some zzz's in that bunker, one of the things you get used to. We had a visit from Santa and some Playboy bunnies? on the landing pad. What a Christmas.
I pray for all that are over seas now and wish them all a safe tour and return.
Happy New Year!
Airborne, No Slack and Above The Rest.

Merry Christmas everyone! I just found your site and wanted a little info on my Uncle, if anyone knew him. His name is Joseph Merel Thorn and was killed May 31, 1968. I don't know very much about him as his death affected my so much, that I don't want to upset her with questions. If anyone knows anything or can share stories, please email me at warrio2@yahoo.com. Thank you.

It's hard to believe that almost a year has passed since I first heard from many of the guys of the 327th. You have helped me with putting the pieces together of what happened on 24, Dec., 1970, just outside of Firebase Bastogne. Many of you have shared your memories of my cousin, SP4 Steve ("Stevie") Pohancek, who was K I A on that Christmas eve day. Mostly, you all reached out to me, and treated me as your "lil' Bro' "; and that will always mean so very much to me, I can't describe it in words. But, best of all, some of you have become very close friends (Y'all know who you are!), and that means the most of all. Another 24, Dec. is almost on us; so if you are awake at 04h15, Time Zone ROMEO (Eastern Standard), on the morning of Christmas Eve day, remember the guys who were killed that day.

All of you are "ABOVE THE REST!"

Welby

I served with B Battery, 2nd Bn, 320th FA, 1st Bde, 101st Abn in Vietnam from 1966 thru 1967.
As I watch the performance of the 1st Brigade in Iraq, I am once again brought back to my time as a member of the Screaming Eagles. It is with great pride that my heart goes out to all those who have lost their lives in this struggle. I am forever humbled and in debt to these brave men and women who now serve.
I just completed a triangular case for my flag, and as I did so, I realized how many have died for what it represents: A beacon of hope for the oppressed, a talisman for all freedom loving people, and a hallowed symbol of Liberty.

I am trying to locate my brother Rea Ellithorpe, he was born in Nashville, Tennessee on August 1, 1955. He was in the 101st from 11/72 - 7/74. He made a career of the military and traveled all over the country. Our mother passed away in 2000 and now my dad is in poor health. My dad has been in the hospital and I need to get in touch with my brother. My dad has talked to my brother over the years but he did not have an address and the telephone number he had is not correct. I would really appreciate any information regarding my brother's location. Thank you

This is an e-mail that was sent to me, I hope someone in ABU can help these fine people out.

Dear Company A, 1st Battalion (Airborne) 327th Infantry Veterans:
Can you help me (a very elderly lady) locate a living witness to the enemy action that resulted in the death of my beloved nephew, David Lee Wilkerson, when he was the 3rd platoon's machine gunner on March 24, 1968?
I have been told that if a living witness can be located, a request to Congress may be made to have his award upgraded to the Medal of Honor - as that would have initially been awarded had there been less political pressure by protesters to limit the Medal of Honors given in Vietnam.
Two enemy engagements are listed on is Silver Star citation that was awarded in 1968. The following quotation is from last paragraph citing his final act of heroism on March 24, 1968:
"On the following day, 24 March 1968, the third platoon was moving west through very thick undergrowth. As the company moved along the second platoon, which was the middle element, was ambushed by an u undetermined size enemy force. The initial enemy burst wounded the second platoons' machine gunner and immediately the call came for another machine gun. Almost simultaneously Specialist Wilkerson picked up his machine gun and made his way through an intense hail of enemy automatic weapons fire to the point where the initial contact was made. He immediately began laying down a base of fire covering the entire area so the second platoon would pull back their wounded personnel. Specialist Wilkerson kept firing and moving, remaining alone and exposed, covering the second platoon's withdrawal until he himself was killed by enemy fire. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Thank you for your help,
JoAnn Wilkerson
(Mrs. Conley Wilkerson)

P.S. My husband is veteran of World War Two.

Would also like to work out something from former No-Slackers on pooling some money together to send some Xmas goodies to our Brothers in Iraq. Remember the Sinai and how much care packages meant to everybody??????? So squeeze the money out of your wallets and forego that six-pack of Bud for a good cause. The members of the 101st Airborne Division serving in combat in Iraq are working hard to honor and carry forward the traditions of earlier generations of Screaming Eagles who served our nation in combat. We are all very grateful to those who served in our ranks before us for the record of selfless service and courage that you established. We are also grateful for your support of our soldiers in Iraq. We will continue to take the fight to the enemy and we will also endeavor to continue the great work our troopers have done in the effort to build the new Iraq.

Great website. As a former "Above the Rest" officer, I can say that this site is truly great. I was a PL in D Co. for 2 years, and the HHC XO for 1 year, from 99-02. I can tell you all that the 1st BN and all the soldiers of the Bastogne Brigade are doing great things up in Northern Iraq. I am currently stationed in Kuwait as an Intelligence officer, but I am in contact with the Bastogne Bulldogs to this day. The soldiers, NCOs, and officers are still exceeding the standards, and in some cases, sacrificing all for their fellow soldiers. We have lost some soldiers in ABU and HHC in the past couple of months, and they will be remembered fondly. If anyone wishes to send well-wishes or anything to the Bulldogs, let me know via email and I will send along the address. The soldiers love to know that the people home remember them, especially in this time of separation. - Above the Rest!!

He has made me so proud and thank you to David and Larry for contacting me. My email address is soccerdiva94@hotmail.com if you want to email me and I can print it out and give it to Pap.

Okay here is my paper; Sorry if it is really long.

Every time I venture up the road a few miles I pass my grandfather's farm and think to myself" One day I hope to be like him." When I say him, I mean my hero, the person in my life who has never let his injuries get him down or stop him from doing anything he sets his mind to.
The things that get my Pap down usually are when we pick on him when we say we heard him kill a deer with two shots. Most of you know that probably wouldn't happen because of his good aim and target range. Sickness doesn't seem to have stopped Pap either. Once in awhile I see him out rolling around in his wheelchair.
There was a newspaper article on Fred Tregaskes Sr. in the Leader Times over the Veteran Day holiday a few years ago. He is a highly decorated man, was recently indicted into the Soldiers and Sailors Hall of Valor in Pittsburgh, PA. Very few people know of the awards he has been given, I won't brag about that.
Pap has never let his disabilities get him down. He usually has a smile on his face, or is yelling about something that just isn't right. He is a good listener and you could tell that just by looking at him. He is a proud man and he loves his country. He loves America so much, he went to war for it and will pay for that for the rest of his life.
Every time I pass that farm and I think of the years Pap spent on the tractor, bailing hay, plowing the hard and dusty earth to make something of his farm, I see pride in his eyes. When I look at him, when I look into his blue eyes I see something I don't in most people, he doesn't let obstacles stand in his way. I have never heard him say " I can't do that, I won't even try." He has always tried.
Pap when you read this I love you a lot. I hope that no matter what life throws at you, you keep on going like you have taught me to do. You are my hero.

Great to have access to a site like this. I sure wish it (and the technology) had been around 30 years ago. I served with No Slack in 71-72. Took command of B co at FSB Birmingham 10 Dec 71. Moved down to Cam Rahn after that and DROS in Apr. I would like to hear from any one who was there at that time.

Hey, I hope you guys go to the Always First Brigade's web sight occasionally. On it now there is a posting by "Christine" who is looking for anyone who knew her Dad, Sgt. Jerry A. Norris/ CO A/ 1st Bn. 327th, KIA May 14, '67. NOW her note sent me to THE WALL's web sight and I find you guys lost total of 7 guys on May 14, as follows: Sp. 4 Michael Bost (think I knew him)/ Sgt. Elton Buef/ PFC Dennis Molese/ Sgt. Norris/ PFC Michael Peterson/ Sp 4 Pat Phillips/ Cpl E-4 Crawford Snow. GOD BLESS THEM ALL. NOW I was patient in our Bde. hospital @ Duc Pho (HHC, 2/502nd), in May, when one evening well after dark, many medivac helicopters came in with many WIA and KIA. Seems an element, maybe company size was ambushed, fought one hell of a fight but many guys were banged up. We came out of hospital tents to help the guys get out of choppers and YES, we sadly carried some KIA's to where we were instructed. JUST WONDERING if that "horrible night" could have been this fight on May 14. We're all brothers and I have THE utmost respect for you guys! Hopefully one or more of you guys will respond to Christine's request for info on her Dad! Her email address is ! All the best, and AIRBORNE! Sincerely, Paul Grimes/ was Sgt. w/ 2.502nd S-4 at Bde. I was sickened to read the allegations from the Toledo Blade on Tiger Force. I knew Sam Yabarra and some of the other guys over in Nam. I had good friend Ernie Winston get killed with Tiger Force in 1968, also Johnson. We pulled a lot of LRRP missions in the Song Ve Valley after it was declared a free-fire zone. We shadowed Tiger Force in the valley, (we worked the west mountain ridgelines) in their so called rampage down the valley. We were in radio contact and would monitor the gooks after the Tigers went through. These "Farmers" would turn into VC as the sun got lower in the west, some of them as soon as the last tiger was out of sight. There were NO FARMERS IN THE SONG VE after the brigade evacuated the valley. If they were, I personally killed over 100 farmers on July 4th with arty. They were carrying packs and weapons. We are all in this together and we were not murderers or rapists. The latest in The Blade is they were assigning a colonel to investigate these so called war crimes. While he is at it maybe he can look into the 3000 people buried in mass graves outside of Hue. The Lurps found them during Tet 68.

Dad, John Walker, was (I believe) in 1/327 in Vietnam (one of two tours) then later in 2/327 at Ft. Campbell. This is an 'outstanding' site; provides a lot of information about part of his life that he spoke little of and much that, as only an Army brat, not a veteran, is hard to truly understand. Also super to know where the 'NO SLACK' of my childhood came from.

I can't tell you how happy I was to find this site and all the information I have been finding regarding Nam and the 101st. My brother Sp.5 James G. Condon was with C company 2nd Bn 327th inf. 101st airborne div. he was KIA on 6/21/66. Jimmy had been in the service for six years. It's been a long time and we never could find out much information regarding Nam. If any one remembers him, I would love to hear from you. I can't believe all the information I have been finding and the wonderful people who have been trying to help me. After finding the Viet Nam Web Site, I had a memorial Page set up for Jimmy.
Jimmy came from a small New England town, after thirty years our family found out by accident that the town had never added his name to the War Memorial in the town square. After much writing to VFW and town officials and proving that my brother had died in Nam a new plaque was ordered with Jimmy's name . I know I speak for my brother and our family when I say God Bless all of you, I know why my brother was ready to go to war,it was and is his country and he loved it and his family, and his dream was that we all could live in peace with no more war's. To the brave men and women of all armed services, may God keep you safe and bring you home soon, your doing one H-- of a job. To all you 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles, God Bless keep the faith, till you meet again. In God's Love

I'm sure I am late with this entry but, I would like to make a comment about the Kontum Jump. The 2/327 jumped from C-130's on December 28th, 1966. Myself and several NCO's set up some pre-jump training at Tuy Hoa south prior to departing to Kontum in November, 1966. On December 28th it was gusting 18-20 knots and all of the company commanders were given the final decision to go or not. I was the acting CO of B Company and decided we should jump. Wild Gypsy was not in the area that day. Major John Giboux was the acting BN Commander. We did have several troopers injured, myself and the third platoon Sgt. SSG Gomez were medivaced to Japan as a result of injuries. Jim Joner did established an excellent Jump Training program in Jan. of 1967. I have done a lot of research concerning the 2/327 events from June, 1966 thru December, 1966 for a book that will be edited in October, 2003.

Best Regards

Bob Meager

My daughter's boyfriend Sgt. Anthoney Maduena is with the 327 HHC recon serving in Iraq until March 2004. Communication has gotten better there, which makes all the difference in his morale. Can't imagine what it was like for all of you during the Vietnam war, especially with the lack of support you guys faced from the country in general. I was too young then to have any appreciation for what you guys did. I now have tremendous respect for all who serve and have served, and want to say thank you for your sacrifices on behalf of our country. You do or have done what most cannot or will not. You are not forgotten! God bless you all!

My grandfather was 327th Glider Infantry in WWII and was killed June 12, 1944 near Caen. We are trying to verify whether he was with the group that came into Normandy on Gliders, but some 327th, I have read, landed at Utah beach with the 4th Infantry Division. We will be visiting there for D + 60 years next June and wonder where we might find more info on the units and combat action leading up to June 12, 1944. Thanks.

I was the XO of A/1/327 when 34 brother Screaming Eagles (29 from A/1/327 and 5 CH-47 crew members) were killed 11/28/71 near Hai Van pass when their chopper crashed after receiving a single hit. To extend the story slightly, there were three aircraft that had that mission that day. One reached Camp Eagle, One returned to Da Nang because of bad weather. I went ahead by ground the previous day to prepare the destination facilities. I did not know until reading the report on your site that there had been a hit on the aircraft. Thanks for a great site. Keep up the good work.

Recently I picked up a Camillus knife on ebay and am trying to learn more about the person who's name is inscribed on the blade. The sheath has a set of paratrooper wings mounted on it, and a coin is mounted on the pommel of the knife that reads 327th A.I.C.G. and is also engraved with paratroooer wings. On the blood groove of the blade is inscribed "Sgt. Woods" with "327th" beneath it. The engraving looks to have been added sometime later, the wings and the coin look like they have been on there for some time. I know this is a long shot, but if Sgt. Woods or this knife sound familiar, please contact me via e-mail. The person I got the knife from said he picked it up at a shop in New Kensington, PA, about 10 years ago. I have three pictures that I can send if anyone would like to see them.

This is a most fitting and appropriate acknowledgement of the men who served our country with this unit. My husband served along side the men from 10/71-1/72, 1/327, C company, then 2/501. (Ed Munson)
Welcome home!!

Mike Carretero contacted me the other day by phone, and what a shock I got, after thirty three years to hear from someone from the unit. Isn't life amazing. You guys have done a great job on this website. I have pictures and even some 8mm movies of ACo. 1/327th from around 3/70 to 2/71. I haven't looked at them in over thirty years, I will now though.
Want to say hi to all the guys who remembered me or thought they did, and welcome home all.
Above The Rest

I enjoyed visiting your website. I am looking for a verteran who would be willing to answer a few question to help with a research paper. Please email me if you would be willing to answer a few questions about the impact fighting in Vietnam had on you, your family and you community. Thanks

To the 327th Vietnam Eagles Point Team:
The rain today gave me a chance to see what's new. Kind of like "screw the wet clothes". Wife didn't like the water but she'll make me clean it up anyway. All of you, it shows what you do what you love and have clearly mastered. This 327th site is all "no slack". I thank God for dogs and rainy nights in cowtown.
Your Friend,
Charles

My husband is currently deployed to Iraq with the 327th INF, and I love this site because it helps give me links to stay up to date on current happenings and learn the history of his unit!
