Over the holidays I was looking at all the photos on the web site. The 39mm anti-aircraft gun that was in the rear area Camp Eagle brought back some memories. I was walking slack for Benavidez when he found the cache. We marked up all the boobie traps with t.p. Benavidez told me it was going to turn into a easter egg hunt and the further away from the cache we could get the better. By the time the day was over we had loaded eight people into one medivac. Ill never forget the look of fear on the face of the pilot of the slick when we loaded that gun into his bird the next day. Our Kit Carson scout assembled the gun the next time we were in the rear for a stand down.
Now on to new memories, I have talked with or have contact information for the following members of the 3rd Platoon 68 & 69. Alva Shirley, Martin Hoogterp, Arvest Sparks, Freddie Fulford,
Henry M. Johnson, Cliford Gibson, Lennie Naughton, Roger Kinzer, James Gilbeaux, Rod Ledger, Tom Murrary, Doc. Olson, Micheal Guest, and Doug Bergman. We are still looking Rebel Tom Odom, Benavidez, Garcia, and Chavez and many more. Call or email with information 904-613-2440

Since finding this website and posting my entry yesterday, I have roamed around the site and noted several entries and a page by Donald (Curly) Jackson of Texas, who died in a motorcycle accident on July 4 of this year, and a page by Garry Wilhelmi (of Iowa, I believe). Curly and Garry were both in my platoon. Curly was a first-rate soldier. Did everything that was asked of him and never complained. He was popular and respected by all. Garry was my RTO and had important talents. He could light two cigarettes while calling for mortar illumination whenever we blew a bush during those rainy nights in Phu Loc District. He could also climb trees to take azimuths back to Roy or Tomahawk when we were up in the mountains during dry season. Best wishes to Curlys survivors and to Garry. I also found Robert Kellers name in the roster. Bob had second platoon when I had third. Weve since exchanged emails and I sent him a picture of the two of us that I had in an old album. Truthfully, I dont think about those days very much, but this has been an interesting look backward, and I want to thank the guys responsible for the website.

I was the platoon leader of 3rd Platoon, Charlie Company, 2/327 from October 1969 to May 1970. My first night ambush was on the railroad tracks at Nuoc Noc on Halloween night, 1969. My Platoon Sergeant was Nelson Morris. After being Platoon leader, I commanded E company until I derosed at the end of August. I was responsible for the recon platoon, the snipers, the mortars, and defense of the TOC. To those guys who were writing about the attack on FSB Tomahawk in June, as I recall the CO was Cox. The First Sergant was a lifer named Dearman. To all of you, I say "No Slack!"

On this 2008 Veterans Day I would just like to say "thank you". No matter what our political beliefs or opinions on the war in Iraq one thing is always true, we are the greatest nation in the world ONLY because of the great men and women who serve or have served in our military.
