Dear Brothers and Sister of the Guest Book

Some of you men knew No Slack Delta Tom Hempel who was KIA'd off FSB Los Banos on 15 July 1969. Tom and I were from the same hometown, Lincoln, Nebraska and we talked about home and looking each other up after Vietnam. He was killed two weeks before his DEROS.

Years later I wrote a story about Tom Hempel and through this story, I met his hometown girlfriend whom he wrote while he was in the service. Her name was Sharon Bremer, who eventually married and kept the married name DeNino. Tom was high school Class of '65 and she was Class of '68. Both went to Northeast High School in Lincoln. I was Class of 65 and went to Lincoln High School so I did not know either until later.

Sharon saved his letters which developed into love letters. She shared them with me and they are very moving. She was devistated with his death.

I learned today that Sharon (Bremer) DeNino, age 59, passed on 31 May 09. She had been a mental health counselor in the Lincoln and Hastings Nebraska areas for her career. I knew she had literally dropped out of site but I was not aware that it was caused by her death. I have been unable to learn anything about the cause of death.

I have an ongoing project to gather additional information to add to / rewrite the Tribute to Thomas Hempel. Any additional info or comments about Tom Hempel and/or Sharon Bremer DeNino, I would appreciate. Over the years, some of you have given me information for the rewrite and I have filed it away. I have reached a point in my life where I am writing again.

Sharon had become a friend and encourager to me. I hope to talk to her sons, family and business associates as I do the Hempel rewrite. I have lost a friend.

Honor and Country

I recently went to my 1st reunion on Sept 26th in Orlando for Vietnam veterns from the 101th. Out of the 60 so that was there only 7 were from the 1/327th & 2/327th. I would like know went there are reunions for the 1/327th in the future.
I was with Delta Co. 1/327th from April 68 to Sept 68. Sgt Herman saved me more than once.
I was slightly wounded on Aug 15th when He came to my rescue then he was wounded and that was the last time I saw him. This was on Hill 1100 out of A Shau Valley. After this mission there was only
22 of us left out of the Company. Two weeks later when we were reloaded with cherrys I was hit with an RPG round on Aug 29th 1968. I was at 3 different hospitals in Vietnam then was sent to Tokeyo. Thanks "Above the Rest"

FYI: This is a very informative website. Keep up the great work. Also, if any veteran is looking for "inside secrets" to benefits and compensation please visit http://www.veteranprograms.com/id1070.html. The website is the most comprehensive stop on the Internet. Veterans can learn everything they need to know about getting what they have earned. The website also lists VSOs who will help veterans.

USFSPA & Divorce Update 10: A bill to protect California disabled veteran's disability compensation from illegal attachment and garnishments was signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger on 11 OCT 09. The bill (SB.285), authored by California Senator Rod Wright, was introduced at the request of the California Alliance for Families and Children (CAFC) in cooperation with the American Retirees Association (ARA). It codifies existing federal law, United States Code, Title 38, Section 5301 into the state's statutes to assure it is followed in California state courts. Although federal law is very clear in its wording and intent, civil court judges nationwide have routinely ignored it. The result has been illegal attachments and garnishments of the disability compensation and erroneously calculating veterans' disability compensation into divorce settlements as a divisible asset or income. SB 285 passed California legislature without a single no vote, even though similar efforts in Iowa, West Virginia and Oklahoma have failed so far. Of significance, this new state law provides precedent for all other states to follow and enact similar additional safeguards for their disabled veterans. Also, it can be a precursor for state legislation to modify state divorce laws to protect garnishments for USFSPA as is underway in Oklahoma with H.B.1053. CAFC announced they have already received commitments from legislators in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to follow the California lead.

Retirees who are impacted by the Uniformed Services Former Spousesรƒยขรฏยฟยฝรฏยฟยฝ Protection Act (USFSPA) and/or concerned about protecting their disability compensation concerns should be aware of the USFSPA Liberation Support Group (ULSG). Their mission is to support the rights of all service members active-duty/retired/ Guard & Reserve military members, Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service and Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in challenging the USFSPA, Pub. L. No. 97-252, 96 Stat. 730 (1982), currently codified as amended at 10 U.S.C. รƒโ€šร‚ยง 1408. This law, hastily passed by our Congress without forethought and little discussion, invalidated the United States Supreme Court's 1981 majority 6-3 ruling (McCARTY v. McCARTY , 453 U.S. 210 1981) that asserted military retirement/retainer pay is not subject to division as common property in state divorce proceedings. ULSG challenges the USFSPA in our courts system, strongly urges the US Congress of the United States to repeal this unjust law, and informs the Media to overcome this injustice to all service men and woman who unselfishly have served their country and have earned the sole right to their retainer/retired pay vice being treated as common property during divorce. Retirees with ideas or concerns regarding the USFSPA can contact the following state ULSG representatives:

I just want to say, i'm forever proud to have been a part of 2/327 its been 9 years since my ets. I never knew that last walk away from the motor pool would have had such a grip on me, I have missed no slack. I only served 3 years, I was so lucky to have been with such a great unit, and company. I am really proud of 2/327, i guess i just wanted to say hey, and let you know all of you, even though most of the soldiers i served with are not asigned to 2/327 now, I'm proud of you all, and you will allways have my support, and great thanks.
I did take and have taken good care of my little girl, she survived her childhood cancer, and is just like any other kid except shes more awesome! I think of all you soldeirs often. I have not forgotten what you do. I cannot imagine what some of you have been through, but i know you can do anything if you put your heart into it, I wouldn't be the person i am today without having been a part of 2/327 I am proud of you 2/327inf. I support you always. "NO SLACK"

Need help in locating Linda Hughes who posted an article about Pfc Dunigan and asked if anyone served with him or knew him.She stated that he was in Japan after being wounded.
I was on the LST Navy ship going up to Duc Pho and knew a Pfc Dunigan. In fact, I have a picture of him. I remember he was wounded around DucPho, went to Japan and later heard he drown in a swimming pool. I have tried to e-mail Linda but keep getting a failure notice. Can anyone email her at imc2352@aol.comm and ask her to cantact me at boxerevans@yahoo.com ABU 1/327 Jim Evans

Dear Miss Lokey,

I am the individual who posted the account of the sad incident in which Udon was taken from us. I was saddened to hear your first report that he had no family that could be contacted. Now to hear you have found his family, and especially his 91 year old mother; is a joy to hear.

My mother is 92 and closure is what it all about at that age. Mothers who live to such a beautiful advanced age; have such wisdom and grace. I strongly suspect that Udon's pleasant manner, smile, and the look of acceptance on his face when he knew his situation was perilous; was from his Mom.

I am looking through some pictures that have survived the ravages of time and a life that has had many turns. I have two which could be Udon; but I would want to be sure before I shared them with his family. If you have obtained a picture from his family and would be able to share it; that would wonderful.

Thank you for all your work to bring them home. Udon has been at home in my heart for the past 43 years. If my sharing that connection has brought some measure of closure for his family then Undon and I have completed our long range mission.

I got to Vietnam in October 1969 and was at FB Bastogne from Feb-May 1970, at Camp Eagle. I am looking for anyone I served with, especially a radioman known as "Smitty". Was at Camp Eagle, and was a forward observer. I also seem to remember a black Sgt. nicknamed Soupy Sales who was with the 1/83 arty. I don't remember a lot, and would like help remembering, and hooking up with the guys I served with. Trying to work on a VA rating and anything that any of you remember would help.

Thanks
Gary
