In life, a chain of events effects one person's life while having a profound effect on another unrelated person or persons.
The best I can remember:
Sept to Nov 1971; It started to rain
I was in "C" co 1st of the 327th airborne we were grunts By Nov. we were comming off some mission out of DaNang operating off a very small Fire Base (Maud) in the mountains You could see the China sea to the East. One night we watched as the fire base to the West blew their final protective fire. What happened? Captain Casey warned we would probably be overrun.
On Nov. 26 we started to move back to Camp Eagle through DaNang. A friend and I were almost late for the formation on the tarmac pad at DaNang. I ran down the steps to fall in. My friend lagged behind to pick up something.
It was grunts first (I guess out of respect) on the choppers. We loaded to the sound of "Gentlemen you know the drill. No animals. no live amo. Keep standing and move forward!! Move forward!!" There was mumbling, then a bark or a yelp. Someone had a dog. The next order was "Unload men." The rear eshalon with the clerks and cooks was then loaded in our place and the Chinok gaggle lifted off with a whop whop whop sound and monsoon clouds in the background. My friend and the dog had sent all those mothers son's to their early grave on the side of a mountain stream just west of the China Sea. We were left standing in the drizzle to fly back later as punishment for dog violation. We waited at least 3 hours before we were told the Chinook and the men were MIA. I often think about the heartaches and tears that dog caused the mothers, fathers, wives and people dear to their hearts.

E. Miller,D. McKinley recent posts. 4 KIA on 3/24/68. Sgt Artavia, SpWilkersom, Troy Hayden don't know 4th. Sgt Barduson is listed on virtual wall as 2/68 with B co. I don't remember but had to identify Troy Hayden having just arrived in field with him a few days prior. It was our first firefight, with same 60 team. Had to research virtual wall to find Troy's name. Did not remember.

PFC Dennis Patrick Molese died in battle on Mother's Day Hill on 14 May 1967. He arrived in country on 8 Apr 1967. He was a member of the 101st. He was airborne. He was very proud of that. Guess he was a cherry or FNG, but we all had to start somewhere.

The real old guys (see WWII) would say he was a hero. The toughest thing is that it doesn't sound like anybody knew him over there. I never did combat, so should probably just shut up.

I was in on the General Leroy Eltinge troop transport ship and landed at Cam Ranh Bay in July 1965. I was with 'B' Company, 2nd Battlion, 327th Airborne Infantry and if anybody remembers me give me a call (215-464-2294).

Also does anybody know how many troopers are still around out of the 3600 men on board the ship.

"It was such a senseless war. I lost my nephew Michael Campbell. He was only 26 years old. Sad." The politics of war never justify the loss of good men on either side. Our hearts will always bleed for those who never came back. We have to look to those who survived to make any sense of any war. Warriors are a rare and strange breed. I would say they are a nation's most valuable resource. They are not made; they are born, and then trained. One never knows if he is one until his fist fire fight, and then he will never be the same.
Recently I became aware of a family situation that required all the training and heart that warriors possess. I thank God that at seventy years of age; that the warrior heart still ticks and like Wild bill would say, "Gether done!" In the getting done, no warrior stands alone. I know this all too well as I spent my whole basic load, set off claymores, and everything I could get my hands on. I was surrounded by my opposition and things looked pretty bleak. I was about to be over-run. Then my sweet and lovely wife calls for artillery support, and additional ground troops. "On the way, wait" I waited; by the grace of God. Lawyers:,Olsen, Brown,Meyers, and Paralegals, Trish, investigator Don et al; mapped out the Operation. Professor Meyers and Maryland his right hand, hit the airways with airial attacks. Then the artillery came. Jim Mann hammers the Montana grid square. No slack and above the rest ground troops Yankee Jim and a Platoon of Gung Ho brothers stormed the enemy. Just when the reinforcements changed the tide, and the battle seemed no longer in question; a Marine (Tom Brennan) fought his way to the battlefield and extracts my incarcerated six. The battle goes on; but the opposition knows they are in for a fight.
I don't know if there is any sense to war. Jesus said "You have war because of greed" I guess that's true, even down to two siblings fighting. Someone wants their way, and justice demands that they be stopped. Then is the clarion call for warriors from every phase of life to step forward and do battle. For it is in the the heat of battle that a human heart is forged into a heart of gold. Your Nephew had a golden heart, and every veteran feels the call to demonstrate that heart, every time they stand for that which they defended. Be proud of that young man to whom we salute, with every breath of freedom we possess.
Last night I sat in a isolation lock down POD in a Montana Jail. I hear over the loud speaker, "Wainscoat! Roll her up. You're outta here!" Thirty minutes later I stood looking at a Bondsman and a stranger. You have been bonded out he said. By whom? By him, the stranger: but he was no stranger; he was a brother in arms, another veteran with a golden heart.
As I sit here at the hotel computer in Great Falls, awaiting the court's decision as to whether I leave Cascade County; I want to thank every individual and couple who have come to my mom's, my daughter's, my family's rescue, and still continue the fight for Justice and Equity. You all have my family's eternal gratitude and prayers. Scoat, over and out.
