Airborne All the #%$@ Way!! A wonderful website, thank you very much. Reading the guestbook has drawn a lot of emotion out of me. I served a year at Ft Campbell 66-67 A 1/502(Jerome Morgan(JP), Dan Clint, Melvin, and so many other paratroopers. then 2nd platoon A 1/327 June 67-68 and it is good to see so many airborne brothers doing well, Zero, Evans, Clint, I remember all of you. Garcia, remember we saw each other at Ft Bragg with Jones and who was the other brother?. You got shot in the same place in the legs I did back in Chu Lai in August 67, you were 20Bravo Oscar in SongBe, horrible place, we lost to many brothers there. I remember when we went into the Ashau in April, our old 2nd platoon leader (Lt Lawrie) was B company commander and how he led the charge up the hill and got shot. Did you all know our Bn CO, Colonel Sydnor was the man that led the rescue of POW's into North Vietnam? I finally went to a reunion 4 or 5 years ago, at the Ghostriders's (Col. Morse's another great leader) urging, and I am very glad I did, and would recommend all vets attend at least one. Yogi bear you pierced my ear (and a bunch of others) in Phu Bai around June 68, you know we took care of all the medics....I have the 2nd platon picture in my cubicle at work a reminder to all what sacrifice truly is. Airborne all the way. To all the current troopers, protect yourself and thank you for your service, you are special. For all combat veterans, PTSD is real, I was lucky, had three years at the vet center with Dr. Covi (1st Infantry) who helped me and others, war is hell and there is no shame to seek help. Airborne all the Way, will be posting some pictures soon.

Happy New Year! We love this website. It has been very helpful for our members. Also, our members tell us that our website is the best place for veterans to find information about compensation, pension and benefits for veterans. We have been told that VSOs now recommend that veterans visit our website first before filing a claim. Veterans learn about the process, who to see, where to go, and how to maximize their disability claims. Visit today!

Update on the entry I made on 10 Nov, 2009 about Ed Haak. I was looking through some old orders and found the set that assigned Ed and myself to the 327th. We were with the 327th from Feb, 1970 until Dec 1970. I went to Bravo 2/327 and Ed went to Cobra 1/327. If any Cobras from 1970 remember Ed and would like to make contact with him, send me an e-mail and I will give you his contact info.

Does anyone remember the fragging incident in the No Slack EM club on 12 Dec, 1970? A lot of guys were hurt that night. I received a minor frag wound to my right shin. One of my RTO's got schrapnel in his right shoulder and right butt cheek. We both spent the night at 326 MED along with a lot of other guys.
CID talked to everyone who was in the club, but I never heard the outcome of their investigation. I left for the World about a week later.

Ord; on weekends I often traveled into SF to see rock greats at the Fillmore, or Led Zepelin at Winterland, and Ike and Tina with the Rolling Stones in Oakland Coliseum. Word came from the top not to use "Lulu" marching songs because they were offensive to women. I replaced Lulu with Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance". There was never as much esprit de corps with "Peace" as there was with "I Want To Be An Airborne Ranger"! NFS

I happened upon Ted McCormack's story after searching for info. on Hill 882. A show on the military channel made me research the battle I served with 1st Plt.Company B, 1/327th. I arrived on Hill 882 new(less than a week) in country sometime in May. I had forgotten most of the names of buddies, unit # etc. until I read his story. The only names I remembered was Erick's, Ed's and Forrest, and then Capt. Terrible Terry and Lt. Shultz when I read the story.
I recall most of his story about the battle on 882 in that May. A lot of it was a daze for me since I arrived with some other new replacements for the unit. It's amazing how now I recall some other names, details etc. I was in country with the unit until early February 1971.
As a "shake and Bake" NCO I later became squad leader(not sure which squad) and even platoon sgt. for several weeks because we had no E-6's or E-7's for a time. I had no problem remembering a lot of the events and faces but names seemed to escape me. I hope to hear from anyone who served during that time. I have not done a lot of research regarding exact dates but intend on finding out a lot more in the coming weeks.

4o years ago this Thanksgiving I had turkey at a mess hall in Bien Hua, then again on the airplane over the ocean. I arrived at Travis around 7 or 8 PM, called a buddie and he came and picked me up. He drove me to my folks house and surprised everyone. Had turkey dinner again before midnight. So three times in one day, three different places in the world. The previous week my mother had someone (my buddies) take her to Travis to watch every plane land, my flight was the first she had missed.
I pray all is well with all of my platoon and company members and all that I met and knew in the military.

HI Guys and Gals-I have helped many Vietan vets to reenter life after Nam. It is a bitch. A vet taught me that people don't care and don't understand. Don't expect them to. They can't as they have not lived, loved and lost. If they want to hear don't turn them off. It is a start.
Google the 20 uses of turmeric. Check out secondopinionnewsletters.com for alternative health solutions to our health concerns. It has helped me.

I think the name was Smith.(probably around feb.or mar.of 72. I was one of the individuals that was pulled off the chinook that crashed. I still to this day wonder why I was blessed, I hope that there is someone out there who remembers me.My nickname was Frenchie and I came from the 173rd the third herd before being with A Co.

I cannot get your "contct us" to work. My uncle; Herman Droege was a private ; Co. I 327 Infantry in WW1. I would like to submit a photo of his tombstone and possibly an article I wrote of some of his experience in combat. I would also like to get more history of the unit in WW1 and perhaps more information about my uncle at that time. Please pass this on to the proper place. Thank you J D Jones

My son Efren Sosa was in 327th. He was with the Alligators and went to Iraq in 2005. There was a
picture taken of the company. He never received
it. Anyone know how to get a hold of this picture?
His best buddies and combat brothers are in it
and it would mean an awful lot to him.

Dear Brothers and Sister of the Guest Book
Some of you men knew No Slack Delta Tom Hempel who was KIA'd off FSB Los Banos on 15 July 1969. Tom and I were from the same hometown, Lincoln, Nebraska and we talked about home and looking each other up after Vietnam. He was killed two weeks before his DEROS.
Years later I wrote a story about Tom Hempel and through this story, I met his hometown girlfriend whom he wrote while he was in the service. Her name was Sharon Bremer, who eventually married and kept the married name DeNino. Tom was high school Class of '65 and she was Class of '68. Both went to Northeast High School in Lincoln. I was Class of 65 and went to Lincoln High School so I did not know either until later.
Sharon saved his letters which developed into love letters. She shared them with me and they are very moving. She was devistated with his death.
I learned today that Sharon (Bremer) DeNino, age 59, passed on 31 May 09. She had been a mental health counselor in the Lincoln and Hastings Nebraska areas for her career. I knew she had literally dropped out of site but I was not aware that it was caused by her death. I have been unable to learn anything about the cause of death.
I have an ongoing project to gather additional information to add to / rewrite the Tribute to Thomas Hempel. Any additional info or comments about Tom Hempel and/or Sharon Bremer DeNino, I would appreciate. Over the years, some of you have given me information for the rewrite and I have filed it away. I have reached a point in my life where I am writing again.
Sharon had become a friend and encourager to me. I hope to talk to her sons, family and business associates as I do the Hempel rewrite. I have lost a friend.

USFSPA & Divorce Update 10: A bill to protect California disabled veteran's disability compensation from illegal attachment and garnishments was signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger on 11 OCT 09. The bill (SB.285), authored by California Senator Rod Wright, was introduced at the request of the California Alliance for Families and Children (CAFC) in cooperation with the American Retirees Association (ARA). It codifies existing federal law, United States Code, Title 38, Section 5301 into the state's statutes to assure it is followed in California state courts. Although federal law is very clear in its wording and intent, civil court judges nationwide have routinely ignored it. The result has been illegal attachments and garnishments of the disability compensation and erroneously calculating veterans' disability compensation into divorce settlements as a divisible asset or income. SB 285 passed California legislature without a single no vote, even though similar efforts in Iowa, West Virginia and Oklahoma have failed so far. Of significance, this new state law provides precedent for all other states to follow and enact similar additional safeguards for their disabled veterans. Also, it can be a precursor for state legislation to modify state divorce laws to protect garnishments for USFSPA as is underway in Oklahoma with H.B.1053. CAFC announced they have already received commitments from legislators in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to follow the California lead.
Retirees who are impacted by the Uniformed Services Former Spouses Protection Act (USFSPA) and/or concerned about protecting their disability compensation concerns should be aware of the USFSPA Liberation Support Group (ULSG). Their mission is to support the rights of all service members active-duty/retired/ Guard & Reserve military members, Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service and Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in challenging the USFSPA, Pub. L. No. 97-252, 96 Stat. 730 (1982), currently codified as amended at 10 U.S.C. § 1408. This law, hastily passed by our Congress without forethought and little discussion, invalidated the United States Supreme Court's 1981 majority 6-3 ruling (McCARTY v. McCARTY , 453 U.S. 210 1981) that asserted military retirement/retainer pay is not subject to division as common property in state divorce proceedings. ULSG challenges the USFSPA in our courts system, strongly urges the US Congress of the United States to repeal this unjust law, and informs the Media to overcome this injustice to all service men and woman who unselfishly have served their country and have earned the sole right to their retainer/retired pay vice being treated as common property during divorce. Retirees with ideas or concerns regarding the USFSPA can contact the following state ULSG representatives:

Dear Miss Lokey,
I am the individual who posted the account of the sad incident in which Udon was taken from us. I was saddened to hear your first report that he had no family that could be contacted. Now to hear you have found his family, and especially his 91 year old mother; is a joy to hear.
My mother is 92 and closure is what it all about at that age. Mothers who live to such a beautiful advanced age; have such wisdom and grace. I strongly suspect that Udon's pleasant manner, smile, and the look of acceptance on his face when he knew his situation was perilous; was from his Mom.
I am looking through some pictures that have survived the ravages of time and a life that has had many turns. I have two which could be Udon; but I would want to be sure before I shared them with his family. If you have obtained a picture from his family and would be able to share it; that would wonderful.
Thank you for all your work to bring them home. Udon has been at home in my heart for the past 43 years. If my sharing that connection has brought some measure of closure for his family then Undon and I have completed our long range mission.

I was on the LST Navy ship going up to Duc Pho and knew a Pfc Dunigan. In fact, I have a picture of him. I remember he was wounded around DucPho, went to Japan and later heard he drown in a swimming pool. I have tried to e-mail Linda but keep getting a failure notice. Can anyone email her at [email protected] and ask her to cantact me at [email protected] ABU 1/327 Jim Evans

Jim W

I got to Vietnam in October 1969 and was at FB Bastogne from Feb-May 1970, at Camp Eagle. I am looking for anyone I served with, especially a radioman known as "Smitty". Was at Camp Eagle, and was a forward observer. I also seem to remember a black Sgt. nicknamed Soupy Sales who was with the 1/83 arty. I don't remember a lot, and would like help remembering, and hooking up with the guys I served with. Trying to work on a VA rating and anything that any of you remember would help.
Thanks

Just read the "More from Tiffany" blog in which she arbitrarily decided to omit Infantry from the 327th Infantry Regiment. I am annoyed by this action. I am still very proud to have have served with the 1st Battalion of the 327th Infantry July 11,'67 to July 11,'68 as a "boony rat". I feel she has broken the link between the past and the present by this omission. She should have studied the storied past of the 327th Infantry Regiment during WW11 and the Vietnam War instead of falling for political correctness. God Bless our brave men and women in harm's way. I thank you for your service.

I just saw a blog by Big Mac who stated he doesn't see many 67-68 "boatpeople" signing into the 327th website. I think that this goes along with what I said earlier. Pre-69 (or 68) members just don't seem to be interested in re-living the past. What a shame.

Dear Miss Lokey; Imagine how surprised I was to see your posting when I realized I was standing about twenty feet from Parker when we lost him. He was a tall friendly young man who's wide smile always made one grin inside.
That morning was so surreal. We were working our way up a steep canyon. Very narrow at the base where the river was. We were close to the top of the ridge which was the source of the river we were following. We were moving towards a platoon size ambush position. We were the 1st platoon of B Co. 1st 327 Inf.
Being at the headwaters of the this river made us feel like Alice in wonderland. The vegetation was humongous. The wild elephant trails turned into giant steps when they headed up the mountain. You had to climb up one step at a time. The steps being about 30 inches high, and any number of inches deep depending on the incline of the mountain. The headwaters came gushing out of a solid rock wall as though a giant had turned on a spicket. The water cascaded down in monstrous leaps from one pool to another.
The Platoon Sgt. Passed the word on to take a break and fill your canteens because we would be in the ambush position for as many as three days without water resupply. You had to practically put your mouth right on another man's ear to be heard. The word was past on. I was standing behind three guys where it was easy and safe to dip our canteens. I looked to my left, looking over where Parker was. The further you were away from the water, the greater the incline so I was about half as high as the falls where Parker was. We were filling canteens from the third pool below the head waters. Right next to the third falls Parker being held by another trooper with one hand on his LBE (Low Bearing Equipment) as he leaned over into the falls. The sound of the seven falls within a quarter mile; was thunderous. I could see the arms of those half way between Parker and I waving in the air in alarm. I kept watching in Parker's direction thinking; what going on? They were trying to warn Parker of the danger in the falls.
Everything seem to shift into slow motion as though you know something terrible is about to happen, and there is nothing you can do about it. Parker put his hand holding the canteen into the foam of the falls and it was as though it began to pull him in. The trooper holding him let go and broke his fall at the last second, nearly following Parker into the falls. Parker was spun over on his back on top of the foam as though the water was solid and now he was riding the foamy torrent down the falls. Parker had a canteen in one hand and his rifle in the other. His out stretched arms as he went over the falls gave him the sacrificial and resigned look of a martyr. Parker plunged disappearing into the pool below.
The tranquil look of the pool with leaves slowly floating around seem to say Parker will suddenly pop up and we will all have a good laugh. After several minutes nothing surfaced. Then Parker's canteen pop up on the far side of the pool. Several men started to twist commo wire together, and then tied it around the waste of the trooper who had been holding on to Parker. The Lt. stepped forward and had to forcibly stopped the men trying to go after Parker. The Lt. then threw a log the size of a man into the pool. It disappeared immediately. We waited until we began to doubt that a log had been thrown in. Suddenly the log shot up like a submarine surfacing, and careened over the next falls. All attempts to jump into the pool after Parker ceased.
The Lt. broke radio silence and reported the loss. The mission was put on hold for two days while ropes and equipment were sent out and all attempts were made to recover Parker. There was a twenty four hour watch on the falls and down stream for his body. It never happened. It was a hard day when we had to leave Parker behind. His canteen bobbled in the little cove where it had popped up when Parker did not surface. A sad marker that we not only loss a brother; but had to leave him behind.
Every conversation about Parker after that was always punctuated with "Can you believe they have listed him as MIA as though he may still be alive out there somewhere".
Miss Lokey, thank you for doing what should have been done forty-three years ago. PS. Did I mention he was a handsome Black man.

I would first like to add my condolences at the passing of the other Jungle Jim who was a good soldier, a good man and a brother!! He was frequently confused with me several times on the 327th Web Site as we had the same handle JUNGLE JIM, mine came from my call sign as company commander in Vietnam.
NEXT I would like to address the entry from Larry Fuller. He did not enjoy the 64th Reunion as none of his buddies were there. I am truly sorry to hear that. Larry let me explain about the reunion this year. It is generally twice as big, but there were special circumstances this year. We had to change the date from the usual August date because of the Division Sponsored WOE at Ft. Campbell. As far as those folks that looked like they were still in the field, I will apologize, but every group that has VN Vets has those that believe that the crudier they look the more Vietnam Vet they look. Our next reunion in 2010 is in Indiananpolis, IN and we should have 500 to 600. By the way you didn,t identify what unit and period you served so we can see if we can get you hooked-up. My dates with the 1st Bde Abn.(Sep)2/327 B and C Co also Commanded the Phang Rang Repo/In-Country Training.
I am currently the Chairman of the Board for the 101st Airborne Division Association and if you would like to address your concerns to me I will be glad to reply.

The Nat'l League of POW/MIA Families is atttempting to locate photos of the 1,731 Americans still unaccounted for in Southeast Asia.
Udon Parker was lost on 13 Mar 66. Approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Phouc Thanh and 15 kilometers west of Tuy Hoa Airbase in the Phu Yen province; he fell into a fast moving river with full pack and gear when filling his canteen. He was swept downstream. His body was not recovered.
He was assigned to Company B, 1st BAttalion, 327th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne at the time of his loss. He had only been incountry 5 1/2 months. Does anyone remember this man? Does anyone remember this incident? Does anyone have a photo of him? Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
To all that read this message - Thank you for your service to our Country.

I served with D/1st/327th from 1/69 to 6/69 as a grunt. This was my third tour. I was a grunt with the 173rd Abn from 4/67 to 5/68 and as a door gunner with C/227th/1st Cav from 6/68 to 12/68 and then went to the 101st.
The memories remain and am in contact with several who were with me in D Co. 1st 327th. I'd like to contact as many who served with me in D as I possibly can. Buddies all.

Just checking in. Been awhile since I talked to "Heavy". Since being a member of this site for 9 or 10 years I have made contact with 4 out of several squad members. This is a good site and I am a proud Vietnam veteran. in fact I was a Vietnam Veteran before it was cool to be one. Enjoyed the WOE very much and enjoyed meeting many of you. Keep this site moving forward. "Blue" AKA David Williamson 1st Plt. 1st Squad,Company C 2nd Battalion 327th Infantry 101st Airborne Vietnam 1-1-69 to 1-8-71.

My great uncle, Harley "Lee" Forbes, was killed in action on April 9, 1945. My understanding is that he drowned in the Rhine River while transporting prisoners across. I am looking for anyone who might have known him and who knows what happened on that day. He was from North Carolina... enlisted through Fort Bragg... had been in a little less than a year when he died... and was in Co. A 327th Glider Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

I was with the HHT 3rd Sqdn 5th Cav and provided support to the 101st. We went through Bastogne on May 9 and we arrived at Blaze on May 10. My command track originally settled at the top where the 18th Surg Med Tent was set up. Myself and the guys on my track helped offload some of the worst of the wounded during the first couple of days of HH. Then we were moved down closer to the river where a hole was dug out and we parked our track until we pulled out in Sept. I left for rear support at Evans in late August. Our "A" Troop entered the valley in late June and a few of my friends ended up wounded. Anyway, my hat is off to all who served in the 101st.

It's official...I'm finally a resident of Dover, Tennessee now. My trailer arrived Friday at dark and I finished unloading today at noon. Travis Shattle got here too late to help. I'm told that it was an accident.
I'm in a dry county in the Bible Belt. We have deer, turkey, Black Snakes and Box Turtles. What more does a man need besides a garden? It looks like the end of the rainbow to Mikki and me. I hope to see many of you in Crossville next year. I haven't made a reunion since 2006.
Ya'all need to check out Linda Brooks' site 'Digital Beauty Designs'. She posted a lot of the Welcome Home Vietnam Vets pics. Her guest book entry is a couple prior to this message.
If you haven't already read it, get a copy of R. C. Morris' book "Ether Zone" about the clandestine but very real SF Delta Force. It was advertised inside the last 101st Screaming Eagle Magazine. That book is hard to put down.

I went to High School with Erik Miller and have recently found his page on this site. My husband Bobby Brooks, was an Army Medic with the 15th Medical Battalion, 1st Cav Division, Airmobile, An Khe 65-66. We recently attended the moving ceremony at Ft Campbell's week of the Eagle held to honor all Vietnam Veterans. I was moved to tears as were most of the attendees, vets and family alike. How proud and grateful we are for Ft. Campbell giving these men the Dignity and Honor they so rightly deserve. It was a true healing mission for those involved.

Ray (R. C.)Morris is 327th alumni Roger Morris' brother.

You can see an assortment of photographs from the Week of the Eagle Vietnam Vets ceremony held at Ft. Campbell, August 16, 2009 on my blog
http://digitalbeautydesigns.blogspot.com/
It is my understanding that so many vets registered that they had to hold the same ceremony 3 times to accommodate all of them. My hat is off to the Commander and Staff who made this event possible

I was in the 1/506th at Currahee in 1969. I read the account of the last days there. I too was on the last shit hook out of the base. Does anyone remember how hard it rained that day waiting for the shit hooks? And the puff that flew out perimeter the night before? I remember all of us huddling together when the rain set in and the choppers could not get us. I remeber being told to haul butt out the back side towards FSB Blaze I think it was if we got hit by ground. Then the rain cleared and the two shithooks came in, got us and took us back to evans. I went back to the world a few days later.
Love to talk to anyone else that was there that day.

I went over on the boat, was in "A" Btry 2/320 Arty. I really disliked being in artillery so when one of our FO sections were all killed in Sept. 65, I volunteered for the FO section and was attached to 1/327 for the remainder of my time. I was on the truck that hit a land mine on Highway 13 (Thunder Road) on Dec. 9, 65. I was proud to have served with the 1/327

Depravation could have been the worst thing. Sleeping rough, banana leaves stuck under helmet bands to keep the rain off while it pounds your body. The insects crawling into the dry area, investigating, probing, biting. The mud as slick and thick as petroleum jelly. The only break from the misery are the intrusive thoughts of Death waiting in the next heartbeat to carry another comrade Home. Who will Death take. The brain slaming that door shut with locks, chains, and nails that is wont be you. You who must raise up and bark death to the others. Yelling, Screaming, Charging. Hoping the madness stops before your heart does. And always the rain falling; pelting the earth and everything in its path. As tiny hammers reshaping the world from sunshine and flowers to mud, blood, crushed plants and humans. Reshaping minds with memories not intended for people. 1/327 Cold Steel Cobras 66-67 ATR

My father, Donald Lafayette Coe served in this unit in Vietnam. He never went into much detail about his time in Vietnam, which I understand. I knew he was a door gunner and was deaf in one ear because of it. I can confirm he was in country in 1970-1971 and another earlier tour which I do not have the time frames on. I am sad to say that he passed away on June 13th, 2009 at the age of 61. He stayed in the Army after Vietnam and served 23 years with pride, retiring as a 1st. Sgt. I just would like to get the word out that he is going to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on July 15th at 10am. He wanted this so very much and considered it an honor above all others to be buried with his fallen comrades and friends. If anyone remembers Donald Coe and can make the funeral, then you will be welcomed as family. Any friend of my fathers is a friend of mine. I am very proud of his service and others who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. I respect what he gave and loved him very much. Thank you for your time, Marselles L. Coe

Greetings: Very interested to find this website. I was searching for information on David Barduson. I am from Davids hometown of Appleton, MN. I was still in high school when David was killed in Vietnam. I played taps at his funeral. David was the hero I never knew. I remember reading about him in our local paper about his activities in Vietnam. I so wanted to be like him, join the military and go to Vietnam. I was just sick when I read he was killed. I was very honored to play taps at his funeral. He was the hero I never knew. I ended up joining the Marines in the summer of 1971 and although I volunteered for duty in Vietnam, I never did get shipped there. My MOS was that of a Field Radio Operator. A few years back I wrote to his parents. I told them I had a rubbing of Davids name from the Vietnam Wall under the glass on my office desk and that I think of David daily. They did not remember me or that I played taps at Davids funeral. But, they did know my parents and ate at their small cafe in Appleton often. They wanted to meet me, but unfortunately both died before I ever got the chance. They were so appreciative that I wrote them a letter. I wanted you, his former comrades, to know that David is not forgotten. Thank you for your service! Best, Dan Schwandt

Today is Flag Day! It started out poorly for me at 2am when I drove through my home town; Soldotna, Alaska and started counting flags that were left out in the dark (Yes it does get dark here for a couple of hours). I stopped counting at five dozen, all were flags put out by the Kenai Peninsula Borough on public property. There were just as many flags left out in front of residences without illumination. This has offended me for years but the borough mayor insists that it is proper since he teaches flag protocol to the Boy Scouts (He didnt have the courage to serve his country)! If this offends you please boycott our rich fishing and tourist industry until some action is taken. The phone # for the borough is 907-262-4441. Soldotnas city offices: 907-262-9107.
The Sunday Peninsula Clarian (A leftist Gannet rag)today published a paper flag with advertising all over it. Gannet insists that even if it is against the flag code that it is not flag desecration. What a bunch of dung!
Well enough carping! I would like to give a shout of "No Slack" to my platoon buddies "Buzzard" Harry Clive, & Joe Won. Also Jack Page who set off the trip flares on the RR bridge on Hwy 1, just below Tommahawk to celebrate leaving RVN (They made him saddle up the next day and hump out to the French Bunker as punishment, and "Slick" from Cleveland.
I love this site, it is like a (past) lifeline.

40 years ago today (6/14/69) the NVA tried to overrun & destroy the Tactical Operations Center on FSB Berchtesgarden. Between 4 AM & 6 AM. Unofficially we lost 17 KIA & 60 wounded (official reports are lower). I wrote in 5 years ago looking for any of the 10 other survivors from my platoon (1st platoon, Co B , 2/327) who might still be around & got 2 responses plus many others from those who were there or witnessed the fight from other FSBs in the area. I have always resented the fact that every report concerning the battle never mentions the fact that we were there & suffered so many casualties from msssive enemy mortar fire. To the best of my knowledge none of the men of my platoon were ever decorated even though they suffered the brunt of the enemy ground assault. Over time I have forgotten so many of the names but I wish to single out two who deserved recognition: Connie Mack Patton of Cowpens , S.C. & Henry Rael of Alburquerque, N.M. If there are any more survivors still around Id like to hear from you. Please take a moment to remember those who were killed & wounded on that day.
