I happened onto your website as I was putting off reading my weekly stack of books - and thoroughly enjoyed it (the website, not the books!). Having departed No Slack on the eve of OIF, thinking about my pre-OIF experiences in the 327th oftentimes seems like ancient history... but the columns and pictures can make any reader feel like they're part of the action. In October 2002, COL Hodges told me - most presciently - that I would glumly watch my successor (CPT Matt Konz) go off to war and help write the next proud chapter of Bastogne history... as I sat and watched Matt on CNN from the "O/C Hilton" at the JRTC - I'll be COL Hodges didn't realize how right he'd be!

Great site, I was not aware this existed until yesterday.
I was an RTO with 1st Platoon, C company, 1/327, from Dec 67-May 68, WIA in a firefight on some unknown triple-canopy little hill in the A Shau. My call sign was "One Zero Oscar" until the late night radio roundup when my handle switched to "Alice in Wonderland". I remember names like "Cutthroat", our exceptionally well trained West Point CO, his RTO "Six Oscar", "Ski", my couldn't-read-a-compass-to-save-his-life platoon leader, "Wiley", another RTO infamous for commandeering a helicopter at gunpoint to retreive the Pony Express our HQ boys were going to hold for another week, "Lurch" (Sgt Adams). Most of all, if you're still out there, Henry "Hank" Ortega a.k.a. "Doc Trip".
If anybody remembers any of these unsung heroes, please drop a line.

I work in D.C. and on my journey around the hill this morning I found a card that had a picture of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, since my Dad served in Vietnam, with the 101st Airborne Rangers, I picked it up to send to him with a note of thanks and appreciation for the courage and strength that I can't even imagine he and all other Vietnam Vets have faced, not only during the war but after. I wanted to tell all of you whom have served in Vietnam, "Thank-you." You are all truly amazing people.

I know this will probably not be posted because I am not of military background but I just need to say this to all who may read this. I really need to say Thank You to all you Vietnam veterans. That is the least of what should be said and done for you but for me who is really a nobody in your eyes just needs to thank you all through my tear and hug each one of you with my heart. I was in high school during this time and now realize the impact of it all, especially since I dated a Vietnam Vet. I would love to be a friend to one who is lonely, who has no one but this is a difficult task after all these years and I cannot get to a chat site of yours since I am not military, which I understand. If someone does read this I thank you for taking a minute to do so. Again, Thank You all. Sincerely, Kathy

1SGT Nelson Page Henry is my father who is from Crossville, TN. He actually grew up in Bledsoe County and moved to Cumberland Plateau, Pleasant Hill near Crossville somewhat early in his life. I have recently been in contact with a few that served with him in his last days and some that knew him well before he was KIA October 28, 1967. His mother, Lillis Henry (Hogue) recently passed away early this century. I am interested in knowing when your next reunion is. I saw the WWII picture of General Eisenhower in the Austin Statesman and was stunned. My father is the soldier wearing a helmet behind the general holding a box. We figure its a camera. He drove trucks and jeeps in the support team that followed the general. My father passed away in 2002. We have his dress uniform and pictures he took during his tour of duty with Ike. Seeing this picture puts all of the pictures we have in context.
Thank you.

"D" 2/327th NO SLACK being the first to report back from the Reunion held in Branson,Mo this past week. I was able to meet up with 5 buddies after 35 years and had a great time at OPERATION HOMECOMING. The people in Branson, Mo really know how to treat Vets which I would like to extend my appreciation for. While staying at the Ramada Inn the LRRP's had a hospitality room which the shared with all. It turned out to be a great meeting place and we even had the chance to meet some LRRP's back from Irag. A great bunch of young solders who made us proud. Just wanted to be the first to check in, everyone keep writing. TIM From NO SLACK

Hello. What a great site this is! I am hopping that someone will be able to help me find some information about my Grandfather. He was with the 82 Division in World War One. We know he was with an infantry regiment, and therefore, he could have been attached to the 325,326,327 or the 328 Infantry Reg. I did not find his name on your list- but perhaps he was in Company A, and having the name Barry, perhaps it is missing. We are sure he was one Reg. different from Sgt. York, but I have confilicting info on which Reg. he was in. Might anyone know of other souces like yours to find out info on these Regiments? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

First Sgt McDonald-TOP,
Thanks for sending the information about my parachute injury in VN to the Static Line to be entered in the 327th Infantry column and my request for help. I was really surprized and impressed that you did that for me. Just to make the details more correct for those who didn't see the column: After jump school at Ft Benning I was assigned to "C" company, "Cold Steel Cobras" 1st Bn, 327th Inf at Ft Campbell, which was in about Oct. 1963...I believe that you were First Sgt. at that time. A couple of months later the Brigade was put on alert for the Dominican Republic and the Battalion was locked down in the barracks. During the alert my soon to be father-in-law pulled strings to allow me to go home on leave to get married. He was a retired Full Bird Colonel still active in the Judge Advocate Department of the Army. Shortly after I returned I was transferred to Hq. Co. I don't know how or why that happened...but oh well! To make a long story short...before I joined the army I attended an art school. 1st. Sgt Leo B. Smith saw some of my art work in my portfolio, the next thing I knew I was painting a Roman Battle scene mural on Captain Shevlins office wall. When I had completed that project I found my self working at Battalion Hq. in S-3 as Battalion draftsman.

Just a note; When I was given that job I took it over from a guy who went back to "C" Co. If I remember right he was one of our first friendly fire casualties in Vietnam, killed by either artillery or air support.

Now to get back to the help I need; a VA claim that I have submitted for back problems that I am suffering with now. After our boat ride to Vietnam in '65 and some time about the end of August, first of September, I injured my low back on a parachute jump from a C-119. It turned out to be a windy day and after I exited the air craft I hit the ground in a backwards motion...you know? Heels, butt, back and head. The DZ commander came running up to see if I was alright, I told him I thought my back was broken...but I could get up. I went to a hospital, may be in Cam Rahn Bay because that's where we were located at the time. Technicians took exrays and told me I had chipped my tail bone, injured my low back and they couldn't do anything for me. So I went back to work. I need to know what hospital or infirmary? It could have been our Brigade support unit? Who was the DZ commander? Or anyone who remembers me getting injured on that jump that can say so in a letter as evidence for my claim. I remember that the clinic that I went to was in an older Vietnamese bldg. possibly two story. There is nothing in my medical records about it. I don't know if it would be on a morning report...because i didn't go on sick call, I just went to the hospital.

By the way, Jerry Aggson I see that you add an entry to this guest book every once in a while. I don't remember if you were on that jump or not, but if you can remember anything let me know. I have a picture of you and others standing in front of the Battalion Hq. office tent at Cam Rahn Bay. Please e-mail me if you recall anything...also I loaned you my copy of the 101st Abn Div 1965 album when you lived in La Quinta Ca., in about 1980, then you moved away. I would really like to have it back! Please!

Thanks for your help,
Alan Gerber

I came across this site doing a search for something else. Seeing that my brother wrote a story & a poem gave me a feeling that is beyond words. See, after VN, I had a brother that I really didn't know anymore, a brother that took over a decade to talk to me about what had happened & only in bits & pieces. I am proud of my brother for doing what he had to do. I am also proud of him that he wrote what he did on this site. I know he gave more than hard work & time in VN; he gave part of yourself, too. I thank God (not the Angel of Death) for his & the others survival in the train station (& for every moment he was in VN). So, Wayne Gaskins, I just wanted to let you know that I've seen a side of you that I thought was long gone. And to say "thank you" and I love you.

On Wednesday, May 4th, the 101st, as well as all grunts through time, lost one of our true heroes with the passing of Col. David Hackworth.

Col. Hackworth spent more than half a century on the country's hottest battlefields and was one of the most highly decorated soldiers in the military.

Hack was awarded two Distinguished Service Crosses, ten Silver Stars, eight Bronze Stars, eight Purple Hearts, and was put in for the Medal of Honor three times.

David died of cancer caused from exposure to yet another terror inflicted upon all the grunts in Vietnam by our leadership. It's called Agent Blue.

In 1965, "Hack" knew company sized units moving through the jungle would not be very effective against a guerrilla army like the VC and NVA.

So he started units like Tiger Force. Small, quiet, camouflaged, field experienced volunteers who, as he put it, could out "indian the indians."

Col. Hackworth was the author of many books and has spent his life writing about the snares of Vietnam, Somalia and the Military-Industrial Complex.

David Hackworth was a fearless warrior. Brave, good, and wise who never wanted anything but to save his people. He will be missed by all.

The outfit puts together a couple of jumps a year, as guests of airborne units all over the world, from Russia to Chile, and all points in between. If you have, say, a cruise planned for your next vacation, consider, instead, blasting out of an Iluyshin-76 at 200 knots, with the Russian SPETSNAZ.

WELCOME HOME VIETNAM VETERANS DAY-MARCH 30

In 2000, I began a campaign to welcome home our Vietnam Veterans. I felt the need to say thank you, God bless you and welcome home.

Last May 15 2004, my team and I left Whittier, Ca. on bicycles to go to Washington, D.C. to ask Congress and the President of the United States to create a day of recogniton for our Vietnam Veterans.

Rep. Linda T. Sanchez has introduced H-Res 30 in the House, which calls for March 30, of every year to be recognized as Welcome Home Vietnam Vetrans Day. Now, there are dozens of co-sponsors to the bill, including Reps. Grace Napolitano and Loretta Sanchez, also from California. We need state reps from other states to pick up the ball and support the bill.

I've spent five years and thousands of dollars (most of which I still owe), countless hours telephoning, faxing, e-mailing, letter-writing, lobbying, fund- raising and pushing those who had the power to make this happen.

This bill, when passed, will show all our Veterans that no matter how long it takes, America's warriors are not forgotton.

People who really care about Vietnam Veterans and about how they were ignored after returning home should call their representatives and ask them why their names are not on the bill as co-sponsors? This bill does not have political barriers, it does not ask for money, time off from work, parades or $50 bucks off at Wal-mart; all it says is that it is time to say thank you, God bless and welcome home to our Vietnam Veterans. My question is where is the name of your state rep? Why don't they support this bill? Call them today and ask them.

We need to do it now before another Vietnam Veteran dies without hearing those words of gratitiude from a grateful nation.

I have set up a Web site at www.whvvd.org On that site I have placed links to government offices, including the White House, Congress and the Senate.

This March 30 has passed just like they have for the past four decades, and no one cared or showed any regard. The Vietnam Veteran, very much forgotton like the Korean War Veteran, will stand proudly on the sidelines waiting for America to recognize her true heroes.

As founder and team coordinator for Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day, I urge to to please help me in this "solo" campaign. I know I can't do it alone, I need your help, in every state of Union. I ask this as one American and as one Veteran to another. This is not just about the Vietnam Veteran. This is about America doing what is right. Please take the time today to say hello, thank you and God bless to all Veterans.

It all began here in Whittier; Ca. help me take it to the rest of the nation.

I am the wife of Dale Wiese. I want you to know he has passed away on March 23, 2005 of cardiac arrest while vacationing in San Diego. If there is any way you can inform LTC Edmund Abood of Dale's passing, I would appreciate it. Dale had recently returned a 36 year sacred possession - LTC Abood's helmet to him and you ran the story on your website. Dale had utmost respect for LTC Abood. Thank you very much.

OK Guys, I am here and ready to make history for you. I am SFC Frank Allen, (RET) 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and have served in both Afghanistan and Iraq so I know what I am drawing and have the attention to detail needed to accurately document a unit in combat. I have 10 prints out on the art market now and have just completed two more, one for the Special Operations Weather Combat Teams and the newest one for 502nd Infantry, Five O Deuce on the loose, ?Strike ? in Iraq print. Now I am going to do one for you, 327th Infantry. I would like to do one for the Vets and one for the Current guys in Iraq. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Talk is cheap so check out my website and see for yourself. www.fallengraphics.com email fallengraphics@email2me.net have a good one and you might see the print soon if all goes well. I also have a RET CSM that does not respect me or my artwork, you know who you are and if you slander my name, I have something special for you. It is the man that makes it happen, not his mouth, Thank you, Frank

Rhonda- There are pictures of my father on this site- in 1st Battalion-EchoCo.- and he is listed as "Little John" The dates you listed for your father are similar to my Dad's. I would be interested to see if your "Little John" and mine are the same. You see, my father was taken from me at an early age as well and I'd love to see more pics of him from Nam.

Some information that might be helpful: I contacted my congressman, and his secretary sent off and got all my medals that I did not receive while I was in VIet Nam. It only took about 3 to 4 weeks. If your medals are listed on your dd 214, you will receive them, only one they were not authorized to send, but did get the ribbon for it, even got the expert rifle I earned while in basic. I was impressed with their response. If interested contact your congressman and they will do all the work, just have your 214 ready for them If an individual sends for them, I was told it would take months. they even put my name on the back of them. If I can be of help e-mail me, Gary VIet Nam 1969.

Letter Writing Campaign for Retroactive Air Assault Badge

The Air Assault Parity Coalition has begun a Letter Writing Campaign requesting the new Secretary of the Army make the current Air Assault Badge retroactive to the Vietnam war for former airmobile and air cavalry combat veterans. For more information and sample letters, visit the Air Assault Parity Coalition website at: http://airassault.bizhosting.com. I'm looking for information and/or pictures of 1Lt Michael R. Callaway and Cpl Michael L. Ebert while they were in Vietnam. They were with C CO, 2ND BN, 327TH INF RGT, 101 ABN DIV and were KIA on 21 March 1968. 1Lt Callaway's brother is trying to find pictures of his brother and find out which casualty his brother was recovering. I will be displaying any info and pictures that I can find of Mike Ebert later this year when we honor our Hancock County servicemen that were killed in vietnam. Thanks.

I am looking for anyone who served with my father, Sgt. Mark Marquess, in Vietnam in C-2/327 Infantry 101st Airborne, he served in Vietnam from January 10, 1970 until December 4, 1970. My father died in 1979 when I was very young and talked very little to relatives of his time in Vietnam and I'd like to find out where all he was during a time that had such a profound impact on his life and anything anyone could tell me of him as I was so young when he died and have a limited amount of memories. If you may have known him or could give me any information on his locations while in Vietnam I'd greatly appreciate it.

My father was an avid photographer and wrote descriptions on the back of his pictues so I do have some clues as to who and where I'm looking for information about. He had pictures of the following people: Dave Sandoval, Don Kirby, Dennis Utt, Ron Kenslow, Ed McWilliams, Horn, Morris, Doghandler, Ralph Velasco, Sammy Gray, Jay Irick, Gary Way, Roger Long, Kerry Kitt, Allen Tinker, Ramos, Watson, George Mallinak, Doc Kelly, Danny Poole, Ron Smith, MacGregor, Terry Kasparian, Mike Rice, Bob Mattox, Sadler, Skinner, Lamburger, Puckett, Chico, Slick Wilhelmi, and Little John. If you have any information on these people or know where I can find them please contact me.

He has pictures of the following places, with the exception of the major cities I can't find many of these places on a map and would be interested in knowing where they are and/or information on the operations my father could have been participating in, in these places. The places were: Eagle, Cau Hai, Cam Ranh, Hoa Binh, Hoa Mau, Cau Hai, Phu Loc, Cinh Loc, Bach Ma Road, Los Banos, Nvoc Voc, Elephant Valley, Truoi, 155, Hill 602 and Nuoc. Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Screaming Eagle Troopers

This is Jerry Berry with the 3-506th (Bn PIO 1967/68) - www.currahee.org. Check it out!

Since Dale and I help each other out from time to time, I wanted to pass on this offer to our sister battalions of 1st Brigade.

I get requests often from our members asking me how do they go about getting copies of their military personnel and medical records. I and others have posted the "How To" on our website and through e-mails. I offered to help anyone wanting to get theirs for a fee...I think $20-$25 it was. Several of you took me up on it. My fee was to cover the cost of postage, filling out the necessary forms, communicating with St. Louis (when needed), etc. The
>two primary reasons why many of you don't go through the process to get yours, is you don't have the time to do it, or understand exactly the process to follow. It normally takes about 2-3 months to get your records, if St. Louis don't have to get back with you. Then, you are put back on their list and that means a longer delay.

I spoke with my daughter, Stephanie, who as you know does a lot of my graphics for our Currahee group; and asked her if she would be willing to do the 'leg work' for anyone wanted to get copies of their military records. Since she is working to generate jobs for 'fledging' home-based business--graphicworks.com, she said she would love to. So, here's the offer:

For a fee of $25, she will take your military service information needed (you provide) to submit it to St. Louis and file for you the request (form 180, if I'm not mistaken, which I have) for your records--(both personnel and medical...two different departments). She will do all the 'leg work' and communicating with St. Louis for you).

The military encourages all veterans to request copies of their records for personal needs, especially for medical claims and treatment. You will be amazed at what all you will find in your records. I had everything from draft notice, shot records, all orders (with so many names of guys that were in my units (Basic, AIT, Jump School, 3-506th). I even found orders with home addresses of other guys listed on certain orders. A wealth of info.

If interested, let us know, and Stephanie will contact you.

When we set a perimiter for the night, the platoon sargent would go around and find positions for the squads. Each squad would then send two out to place flares and claymors. One would set the equipment and the other would stand guard. It was a good time to enjoy the jungle. No rucksaks, just harnesess, rarley any contact. Tie the flares to something solid and pull the pin out just enough.
And then the dusk would come and for a while all the jungle would sing untill it got dark.
Anybody remember that?

I was born in Cuba and my first recollection of the 101st was from the movie โ€œBattle Groundโ€ that I saw in my native country during the turmoilโ€™s of the 1954 elections. Little would I imagine that in 1960 I would be in the US and in 1968 I would be in the jungles of Vietnam with the 101st and serving with the best infantry battalion and regiment in the US Army. Having being part of the 101st Airborne and of the 2nd of the 327th Airborne Infantry will be one of my proudest moments of my life. To all of you whom I have grown to know and have become fond of, and to those of you of whom which have given a sacrifice in serving our great country, this is for you.

Thank you for serving, and I wanted to say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I plan on helping my Grandfather SSG Fred Tregaskes Sr. (a Vietnam Vet) and his wife, Arlene Tregaskes, visit the veteran's homes and listen to the stories. I love listening to what it was like then, because to me understanding the then and the now makes my life more meaningful.

Thank you for serving and giving of yourself for our Great Country. One day I hope to do the same, and God Bless You All. You are all in my thoughts.

SIncerely,
the proud Granddaughter of a wounded, paralyzed, honored me, the proud friend of men he served with, and a patriotic citizen of the United States of America,

Although I was in a sister ballation I rode to Vietnam with the 327th on the USNS General Leroy Eltinge. How many people can say, or even remember that?

Outstanding site Eli. It was my honor and pleasure to briefly take part in the recent FTX at Campbell. The current troops are very praiseworthy and STRAC. Looking forward to Crossville in June. Jim C/1/327 April '64 - July '66

Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas. I'm still looking for Brothers who shared the makeshift, concentina wire Christmas Tree with me at Nuoc Ngot Bridge in December of '69. Remember the rumors when we went to Eagle the week before Christmas? Bob Hope, Nah not for No Slack we were back in the field Christmas Eve. May all of you days be Blessed... Pray for our Troops that are away from their families this Holiday.
Merry Christmas,
& No Slack!

The site looks great and will shortly become the web's premiere memorial to our great Regiment; the oldest in the 101st. Good job! Its been a pleasure to work with each of you over the past five years. I hope we can continue our close relationship in the future as you build this wonderful 327th Association.
