First and foremost thank you all for your service to our beloved country.

I am looking for those soldiers that served with Tiger Co, that may have known Michael Anderson. You see Mr. Anderson passed away awhile back and his wife Rowena, and daughters Nikole and Rachele have been trying to locate photos, and memorabilia from the time he served. I am currently active duty Marine and would like to put a "shadow box" together for them for this comming Christmas. I read his Bronze Star with "V" device citation, and would if at all possible get some additional help. I may be off as far as Mike serving Tiger Co, any help would be great.

Looking for anyone who may have served with and known my father Sgt Donald Lavern Smith from Fennimore Wisconsin. He was in C2/327 October 1967-December 24 1967 when he was killed. He was hit when someone stepped on a land mine. I did find a couple of photos of him on this site.

Met former LT. Sheridan at the USO while returning home for R and R, the XO and later CO of A co. during '69 and '70. A pleasant treat to hear where my unit has been and to personally see where it is now. The little taste of first hand unit history just made me want to hear more of the 2-327th's past.

I served proudly in the Medical Platoon of the 2nd/327th "No Slack" Battalion from 1992-1996. I remember the very first field problem that I went on. The guys there were more than soldiers, they were family and brothers. I never got the opportunity to proudly serve my country or my unit in battle. To all who have served with the 327th, God bless you and keep you safe

I served with A co. 1/327 70-71 vietnam 3rd then 1st platoon.
I Have been trying to locate some of the platoon leaders of that time. I was the PL RTO almost my entire tour. I do remember LT. Lorenzo. I had one that was short and squaty that I nicknamed Spanky cause he looked like Spanky from our gang tv series. Can't remember his name. I served around 4 differnt ones. Any help from anyone that may have some documents from that time that had LT's names would be helpful. Email me if possible.

Someone who meant a great deal to my older brother and I (both Vietnam Era Navy vets),SP4 Michael Joseph Galbraith,A CO, 1ST BN, 327TH Infranty,101ST ABN DIV, lost his life in Vietnam on 6 June,1966. Michael was my older brothers best friend and like a big brother to me and over the years my brother has done many things to perpetuate his memory. Most recently as we grew older Chuck and I have talked about what we, as fellow veterans, need to do to assure that those who gave all are never forgotten, I have begun to help my brother Chuck out with this effort. You see Michael was an adopted child of friends of the family and was one of our neighbors as we grew up. Both of his adopted parents are long since gone and neither my brother nor I want him to ever be forgotten.I am looking for anyone who has knowledge of how he lost his life on that day perhaps another within his unit or a Medic who saw to his body or aided in his evacuation. You see we only have rumors of friendly fire, a short round, which circulated at his funeral, as the cause of death and would really like to know what actually happened on the day of his demise.I realize that Michael had only been in country since 5 May, 1966 and that he may not have been well known but perhaps someone in this unit can provide us with information. Your assistance in this matter will be greatly appreciated. As always, bless you for your service to this great Nation and most assuredly "God Bless America"!

In remembrance of one who didn't come home. Lt. Charles Thomas Jones was the platoon leader with C/1/327 in 1971 and was killed in Quang Tri 39 years ago today. It was said that he always told his men "there are those who remember" - he was right. I know there are thousands of us who are thankful for men like "LT"....for men like you and for our men serving today. So thank you all for serving. You are appreciated. You are remembered.

I just saw on national news that David "Mad Dog" Dolby has died. Mad Dog was awarded the Medal of Honor while serving with the 1st Cav. on his first tour. His second tour was with 2nd Plt. B2/327th, 1967. He was my squad leader until he was called back to the World to recieve the Medal. Sgt. Dolby was the definition of a professional. Those of us who knew him, probably remember several of his sayings that cannot be repeated here. Thanks for teaching me how to stay alive Mad Dog.

Much thanks to Ted Gearing's tip on how to find the info on the men from A/1/327 who were killed on Christmas Eve 1970 (just type in Mike Carretero on the "search" section of this website).
Also Ted could not remember the location of the incident on 4NOV1970 involving the 3 men from C/1/327. If anyone can help me with that, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Can anyone tell me about 4Nov1970 when Capt. Robert Bennett, PFC Charles Hoffman, and Sgt. Joseph Soto from C/1/327 were killed - where did it happen and were their bodies flown into FSB Los Banos? Also what happened on 12Dec1970 when at least 10 men were killed from A/1/327? The Virtual Wall states it was a "misadventure".

Great site. I can smell burning bamboo and taste the unique taste of the water there. My achilles still hurt so I have that effect going. Very proud I served; collectively we halted the cancer of communisim in that region of the world. We had a window of opportunity, for the blink of time we were just the right age...we took it and served. --Shot in right calf, medic Pate fixed it, did not infect...no lost time since we did not move much just then. A rare time of carrying a rolled up poncho at all, shot through it into the butt...Pate and Lt Eklund pulled it out...don't think any of us enjoyed it. Laughing. Grenade to right side during an assualt; no idea where we were when that thing flipped me, but instantly back to the feet as if carrying a fountain drink and not wanting to spill a bit...another piece of those frags just may be making it to the surface at this very time, and it is minorly exciting after so many decades. Bad deal on a parachute jump (no idea of who to thank for getting me out of that little deployment), and a comma for a few days, then right back to work. No purple hearts, as they were refused, same as I saw other guys do for insignificant wounds. I remember a cigarette lighter we were given just prior to leaving, one of my daughters holds it now, it reads on the face: "America's Finest at Freedoms Frontier". Wow, did I wear out several pairs of boots for that honor. We were tired, right! ---I've had a great life as I hope others have as well...lustfull times, confused times, fortunate and earned...most things once wronged were gotten 'better'. I Cannot complain.

I am looking for any information on PFC Robert Charles Johnson, Co B, 2/327th, who died in battle, in Phu Yen Province, June 20th, 1966. I think his tour had just started when he was killed. His hometown was Kanakee, Illinois.

I myself served with Co. C, 1/327th, 1967-68 as an RTO. I was wounded in the Ashau Valley and sent stateside in May'68. Will see you at the next Reunion!

Something I recieved from Fay Chaney, said I should post it on the guestbook for all to see.

I had the honor of taking care of my uncle, my mother's brother until his death at 87 years in 2002. William Wilburforce Daughtry, Petersburg, VA (I believe you have him listed as Daughtery). He was in F Company 327th glider infantry, 101st. He was an amazing man, a man of great integrity. He did not talk a great deal about the war but he did tell me about being a guard when they brought the blindfolded germans to Gen. McAuliffe. He also told me he guarded the tent while the generals planned the invasion of Holland. If there are F company men I might possibly communicate with, I would be greatful to have this opportunity. If I can answer any questions you might have about my uncle I would be happy to do so. I have his medals and patch. I also have a book BASTONE The First Eight Days, Copyright 1946, First Edition published by Washington Journal Press.

Blessings,
Faye Chaney

I was in the 2nd 327th Feb 71 till Oct 71 then was at the R&R; center Camp Eagle. Was in the Danang Airport 11-28-71. Talked to one of the guys from 1st/327th. He said they had been to stand down at Eagle beach and were on their way to Camp Eagle to pull perimeter guard. They were trying to get a C130 flight but all were supposedly full so they left on their way to the chopper pad behind the airport. I was about to go myself when the liason sgt caught me and said he had booked me seats on a C130 in about 30 minutes. I decided to wait and when I heard about it crashing I was stunned.

Today we mark the official day of remembrance of those who have gone before us. However, if you live in this Great Nation of ours, we should be remembering them each and every day as they paid the ultimate sacrifice so we might enjoy the freedoms we so often take for granted. They should not and will not be forgotten as long as those of us who were spared devote ourselves to perpetuating their memory. Pray for them often and may God rest their souls. Also as they would wish pray for our veterans and for those who currently serve for it is men and women like these that have paved the way for our freedom filled lives.

Served with ABU 4th Platoon, "Weapons Platoon" July 7th 1967- April of 1968.

Hey thought I'd check in and let all those ABU's, 1/327th that are going to be attending the Second Annual ABU Stand Down in Las Vegas June 14-17 that it now looks like I will be able to attend after all !

My Great Nephew PFC Lance DeHerrera who just graduated from Basic and AIT at Fort Benning has been delayed from attending Airborne Jump School there for Now.
I had Promised Lance and His Dad I would be at his Graduation from Jump School to Pin MY WINGS ON HIM !
However Lance has been sent to Fort Drum New York and has been assigned to 1-32 10th Mountain Group, "The Chosen".
Actually his Dad tells me Lance is with 2 Brigade, "The Spartans" !
A Real Kick Ass Unit who Took it to the Taliban on their last Deployment to Afghanistan last year !

Looking forward to seeing many of the ABU's of 67-68 as well as meeting new Abu Brothers from 69-70-71 years.
Especialy excited about seeing SSG Jim Baker, Richard "Chino" Sanchez, from my days in 4th Platoon 1967-1968.Alex Yaron, "Doc Ollie" 4th Pltn 68, Carl Hillis " Doc Hillis" 67-68 Navajo Indian who was also with Tigers.

Man I'll never Forget the Look on Doc Hillis Face when I walked up to him after a resupply in the Jungle and started speaking to Him in Navajo . He was in Shock, but sooo Happy to meet someone from his Part of The World " !
Roy Agosta Machine Gunner 1st and 2nd Platoons 67-68.
Gregg Granado 2nd Pltn Bloop Gun 67-68.
Lt.Steve Patterson "Tormentor 6" 1st , 2nd Pltns 67-68.
Don Ackerman "Doc Magoo" 68-70.
David Haynes RTO 69-70.
Mil Thornton 70-71***** took over Pric-25 from David Haynes and then humped it all of 70-71. They met at my house in July 2006 once again while attending an ASA Event here in Phoenix, Amazing !
Looking Forwrad to meeting Jerry Lange , Finally also !
Sounds like ABU will be WEll Represented by those from almost all the Years in Nam !
Man it's been a Lot of Years since I've seen so many of you !
Can't wait to get to Vegas !

Sadly Jungle Jim Grainger will not be there with us, as well as many of our Brothers who have Saddled Up and Moved on Out to the Big AO , we all must go to one day !

Let's Not Forget To talk about the Great Deeds and Heroic Efforts of our Brothers who did not come home with us. I know they would Love to be there with us. It's up to us to Honor them and Include them with us.
I know that may be hard for some to do.

If Not For Them and Their Scrarafice , How many of us would be Attending !!!

I know several I owe my Life To !

It's The Honorable and Brotherly thing we can all do for them.

They are Not Forgotten, Ever !

Bill Smith

Thinking of All Our Fallen Brothers as another Memorial Day Approachs. May they be in the loving Arms of the Lord and at Peace.

I'm also thinking of all of you Brothers that Communicate here this Memorial day.
Pray God and Life have been good to all of you and Yours.

It's been a while since I've signed on here.

Last time was with the passing and loss of my good Friend and Buddy and our Brother James Grainger, "Jungle JIM" .

To recap my Given Name is Billie Richard Smith Jr.
My Family Always called me Rick Smith, Why ???
That's what I've gone by for all these 63 years.

Obvivously someone at the hospital couldn't spell the male version of Billy, Aye !

Those of you that knew me and I served with in Vietnam while with "ABU" 1/327 probably will remember me as Bill or Billy, Orrrrr "Wild Bill".

I Always wore a Tiger Booney Hat !

The DOD had me listed as William Smith, Bill Smith, William Bill Smith on many different sets of orders. They seemed to manage to get my RA number correct , Always!

I came in country in late June of 1967 at Camron Bay.I had orders for "THE HERD" 173rd, but was sent to Phan Rang for P-School with 20 other Brothers from Recon Pltn HHQ CO 1/502nd from Ft. Campbell Kentucky.

Never saw those 20 Recondo Brothers again until just recently this past year !

Left P-School on July 7th with Bill Bennet and others on this site.

We were assigned to "ABU" 1/327th

Hooked up with the Company in Phu Loc.
Stayed there in the rear base camp about a week.

The CO at the Time was Capt. Mitchell ("TWO CLICK" Mitchell) we called him !

I recall as I walked up to Top Dayoc's tent to Report in seeing all those guy's drinking beer, chowing down on BBQ chicken and steak and playing Volley Ball with the net set up in front of the Supply Tent,.

Hell this ain't gonna be so Bad !!!!

I was assigned to 4th Platoon Weapons Platoon. I remember a LT. was Martinez or Lopez was the 4th Platoon LT.??

This LT. kept getting Heat Stroke on our First Operation out from Phu Loc and was eventually Evaced and never seen again.

Fourth Platoon was assigned to a Rocky Hill just outside the Base camp as a Reactionary Force and to survillance the surrounding area.
Those that were up there with us will remember Humping those 5 Gallon Jerry Cans of water up that steep hill, so that LT could have his daily Shower out of that Shower Bag he had come up with.

Funny how all the Incoming Fire one night around 3 AM was concentrated on that Shower Bag !
Remember that one ???

That First day I would first meet SP4 Richard Kirk who took me under his wing as an FNG. Kirk helped me set up my Ruck, Weapon, Mags and all . I learned a Lot from Kirk in the 8 months I was with him in 4th platoon.

Have never been able to find or locate him since Nam. I believe he was from Nutley New Jersey ( not sure about the spelling). He shared with me that he had worked as a Bank Teller or Clerk before joining the Army ????
, Any of you Brothers remember him, or heard from him all these years. He was promoted to E-5 and was my Squad Leader up until he DEROS from Phue Bia. I remember being in the rear recouping after being evaced on March 23 , 1968 and going to the Phue Bia Airport to see him off.
Last time I heard from or saw him.
Ricard Kirk was a Fine man, a great and Savvy Soldier, Great Squad Leader and took great care of us. Got us ready to take care of ourselves when he had to leave us for The World !
Thanks SGT KIRK !

From Phu Loc We went to the jungle or Song Ve Valley rounding up Civilians relocating them, flying out all the livestock and rice and burning everything to the ground.
Operation Wheeler I think ???

I remember that SSG Thomas Welker was our Platoon Sgt. I went out as a rifleman, but was educated quickly as an RTO by the current RTO who decieded to hand the Pric-25 off to me.Guess he'd Humped it all he had wanted too ????

SSG Welker was KIA on July 27 from stepping on a bouncing betty. I was wounded but not seriously enough to be medi vaced.
WE were humping with a Specail Forces E-6 or E-7 and his band of CIDGs that had hooked up with us. One of the CIDGs had wondered off the trail after our lunch break and stepped on the first BB.

SSG Welker went back down the line to see what had happened
with me hot on his ass with the radio. When he too left the trail he stepped on the second BB.

Lt. Mike Norris "Rango" joined the company that smae afternnon or the next day ???
According to him it was the afternoon of the 27th .

Those who had Requested of me the details of SSG Welker's Death and that incident. I forwraded a detailed letter to, as I was his RTO and right behind him when the mine went off.

One such request came from Dan Clint who was with ABU briefly and then went on to Tigers !

I remember Operations in Song Ve Valley and others like in Chu Lai, Phan Rang, Etc, Etc,

Most vivid and burned into my mind of course was the "BIG AMBUSH" January 24th 1968 in Song Be after we had left Phan Theit Standown and having been able to spend sometime on the beach and in that soooo Salty South China Sea !

I remember after the gooks intialy opened up with what seemed like thousands of RPD Machine Guns and basically took out the point platoon, 1st platoon I believe.
There was mass confusion, and our radios had been jammed.
Lt. Tom Carpenter took charge of his own Platoon and the 4th Pltn. he assembeled us in a line parrrelel with the stream we had to cross to get to the NVA Bunkers up stream. I remember him giving the command and we all jumped off and across that stream.
Then making a right turn on line and charging those bunkers.
I don't kow about the rest of you , but I was sure that as soon as we crossed into that stream All Those RPDs were going to come back on line and Mow us all down.
I know my Ass was so Tight you Couldn't have Driven a Staright Pin up it with a 200 LB JacK Hammer ! ( LT. Norris "Rango"had Deros and had Extended to take over the Mortar Pltn on TOC )
He was not there at Song Be .

I rememner that this Redheaded Kid with giant freckles and I had somehow gotten out in front of everyone in our excitment of the moment.
Next thing I remmeber an E-6 grabbed me by the arm and told me to wait for the rest of them to catch up. Well I had to go back out to drag down the redheaded kid and bring him back to the line or he would've been out there by himself.
Until this day I can Not remember their names, but their faces are sooooo Clear to me !

We Lost a Lot of Really Good , Great Brothers there. We almost Lost the Entire Company after the NVA pinned us down for two days !

Lt Tom Carhart was hit in the leg . Med Vac and never returned to ABU.
Jerry Hankins was his RTO that Day !
LT. Tom Carpenter went on to become Tiger 6 for Awhile after he recovered from his wounds !

I recall being flown into the Air Base at Phan Rang for 1967 X-Mas stand down. I remember we discovered the Air Force had a Hamburger Joint. Stand set up on the Flight Line , and we bought, Stole every burger, fry, and coke they had.
I believe in the end at the threat of "LOCK and LOAD' to the Airmen running that Joint !

After Song Be January 24, 25, and 26 we were hilo back out to Phan Theit I believe. and on to Da Nang. From Da Nang we were trucked up Highway 1 to Phue Bia.
I remember going over that Big Pass outside of Da Nang.
Lt. Steve Patterson had been brought in to Repalce Lt,. Carpenter. Jim Grainger and Lt, Patterson had the Company Guide On standing up in their truck when they hit a Tree Limb and Broke off the Guide On.

Top Dayoc was Pissed.

When we arrived in Phue Bia there was nothing there except for an SS Camp by the Highway.
Not sure how long we stayed there, but remember getting back on some Deuce and Halfs that the bottoms of the beds were covered with c-rats.

We headed back south down highway 1 for about 20 to 40 miles and then turned Inland on a muddy road towards the mountains. I remember this large hill that sat all alone in the low land with the mountains high above it on three sides.

It was a Marine position , Base camp, Arty Position ????
I remember first thing we saw was that they had one big tent right on top and center of the hill. It was Riddled with holes from Shrapnel and you could almost see right through it.

We were assigned to share fighting positions and bunkers with the Jarheads for a least that first night.
Sure as hell me got the crap mortared out of us that night. The Jar heads told us it was a nightly thing.

Duuuuuh no wonder the NVA were up there on the High Ground !
The jar heads had tried to go up the ridge and kick them off 2 to 3 times, but had failed miserably.
That became ABU's Job, Oh Yeah !

I remember those Jar Heads telling us how envious they were of our weapons, equipment, and gear. Many expressed that they wished they were going with us. I felt Sorry for them.
Being stuck there !

It took Abu a couple attempts , but once the NVA realized who they were up against they Boogied ASS !

We worked the Thue Thein Province area for some time after that. I remember Hills. Mountains, Brushy Terrain, Jungle on the Higher areas.

I had been promoted to Sgt E-5 sometime after the Song Be Ambush. I think around the 1st week in Feb. 1968. I was given Fire Team or a Squad ??
I was scared to Death with being given that resposability, but had to adapt quickly !

Sometime in March Alex Yaron Doc Ollie Joined the Company and 4th Platoon.

I remember one morning 4th platoon was given point. My team or squad drew the point that morning.
We had set up a perimeter on the side of a mountain the night before. I had a Trooper that loved to walk point. I remember him being skinny and blonde headed. Can't remember his name to save my Sole.
At any Rate we had been told we had drawn point and I did a weapons check on all my guys. Well the Point mans weapon looked like s Rust Bucket. I couldn't believe it an chewed his Ass out for it and told him it better be spotless, shining and well oiled when I got back from the CP Meeting.

Capt Johnson was the Co. He was being pushed by "GHOST RIDER" to get to humpin that morning.
Intelligence knew there was plenty of NVA in that area and Ghost Rider was wanting some "Body CounT"

Well as fate would have it we were being really rushed to Saddle Up and Get Humpin.
I never had the time to physically check my point mans weapon. Asked if he had cleaned it and was ready for point.

Roger That Sarge.

So we moved out working our way around this mountain.
We didn't get very far when we came upon a RED BALL going straight to the top.
Called back and was told to get on it and see where it took us.

We
hadn't gone 40 feet or so I bet when point walked into the NVA's Point man.

DODGE CITY SHOOT OUT !

My man got one round off and his 16 Jammed up.the NVA Point put one right through his heart. He was dead when he hit the ground.

I was third or fourth in the Column. After ths slack man who I think was Chino Sanchez had emptied a mag up trail we with drew a little and got the Squad on Line.

Chino had the idea and suggested that he and I crawl out to check on our brother and set up a couple of hasty Claymores on either side of the trail. Which we did.

Oh Yeah Tight Ass Hole Again , Damn !

Chino and I moved back to the Squad.
By then most of 4th Platoon had come up on Line with us on either side of the trail.

I was a little back and on the horn to the LT. or Capt Johnson .
When Sure as Hell here came Charlie. Claymores got set off everyone opened up.
I remember running back up to the line and coming down right next to Sgt Ricard Kirk.
I let loose with a burst and almost Blasted Kirks Ear Drum out !

Kirk if you're out there I'm Still sooooooooo Sorry About that. Hope you didn't have problems with that after you got out of the Army Brother !

We Ran the NVA OFF.I say this because we had no Body Count and No Blood Trails.
We couldn't believe it !
Recovered our Brothers Body . Cut a LZ and sent him Home !

Until this Day I blame myself for his Death. If I had just quickly made him break his 16 open before we moved out. I could've given him mine, assigned someone else point , or taken point myself that morning,
Damn It, DamnIt, Dammmmmn It !

The next few weeks are really Foggy in my Memory.
Next thing I remember we were still up in them hills in Thue Thein.

We got the word that on March 4th the City of San Mateo, Calif had Adopted ABU.

Doc Ollie got hit around March 5th or so .

Then on March 23 we were coming out of some heavy brush into a small clearing when a Gook Sniper opened up on us.
I remember we were hauling Ass for cover and to get out of that open area.
I was Flat Out for the other side and cover.
When I broke through into the cover Full Out there was a really steep bank right there. I couldn't stop myself and went flying down that bank manageing to stay on my feet somehow, but there was a small stream at the bottom and as I lept over itto the other bank which was just as steep and rocky.

I came down on my left foot only at a bad angle and snapped my ankle with full Ruck and all on me.

Well some of the brothers took my ruck, and all and helped me up out of that gully .
That sniper had the company pretty well zeroed in.
I remember Top Dayoc had thrown his Sweat Towel over a tree limb and that gook was putting rounds through his towel .
Dayoc was cussing up a Storm and screaming for someone to get out there and get that F@#*%#@1 gook.

I believe Jim Grainger and some others from 1st pltn went out and Zapped Him !
There were others who had been hit and in much worse shape than I. They were sent out first and I went out last back to Camp Eagle Aid Station then we all were put in ambulances and sent to some big Mash Unit near Phue Bia just off highway 1.

I spent a few days, Broke my ankle really bad, maybe a week there and was sent back to ABU 's area at Camp Eagle with a Cast on up to my left knee????

Then ABU came in from the hills for a Stand Down.
We all got Drunk, Ate Steak and Chicken for 5 Days, and then you all went back out.
I was back there in the rear with one or two other guys recouping when we got our new Top.
He was a Really Old Guy and a Big Boozer.
Got up every Morning with a Banging head and a hard on for where he was !!!????

After awile he started bugging me and trying to find any Shit Deatil he Could for me to do.
He Finally Got Tired of me falling outta my Cot shit faced in the morning and had me go down and get on a chopper headed out to TOC.
He siad he wanted me out of his sight. I could a least pull bunker duty out there.

Talk about being one Lucky guy in Nam. When that Chopper sat down on the TOC LZ the Arty Major or Col. was right there. He came over to me and asked me waht the F@*#@#* I was doining on his F%#@#*g Hill.
I told him my Top had sent me out. The Whole story.
He told me to get my Ass back on that Bird and to tell Top if he Tried to send me back out there that he would personally see to it he was Court martialed.

Worked for me, but didn't want to face that Boozer when I got Back !

Well Top was Pissed when I came limping back into ABU area. Told him what the Col had said.
He Pretty much let me do what the hell I wanted to from then on.

Hell he even gave me a couple of other troopers a Deuce and Half and sent me down highway 1 for Da Nang on a Beer Run.
I'm Talkin Pallets of Beer to get back up to Phue Bia so it would be there when the ABU came in for their next Stand down.
Was supposed to be a 2 day run. Took us a week. Hooked up with a Marine E-7 CID and we partyed our asses off for three days in Da Nang and Monkey Mountain.

Well I got all the shit burning I wanted to last a Life time after that.
Why he didn't Bust Me was beyond me !

Anyway had gone down the hill to the mess tent for lunch one day after all that ,and as I was limping back up to the ABU area I had to pass by S-1 or S-2 tents. There was some Lt. asking all the guys if they wanted to extend their tours. I laughed at him saying I only had 90 Days, and they were probably looking for suicide Door Gunners.

Got about half way up the hill and thought ,oh crap let me go see what they are wanting.
I asked the Lt. what they were looking for, Door Gunners??

He said no Sarge we need Instructors down at P-School in Bein Hoa.

I thought you Got To Be Shitten me !

Next thought was ,No Chance, Not with this Leg !

Asked him if they'd take me as is. He said sure no Problem they would work with my situtation down there.
OF Course I asked if I'd get a Leave Home.
He said I'd have to Finish my 90 or so days first then I was Guarnteed 45 Days home !

All I could say is where do I Sign !

I knew I had another year to do and didn't want to go to Bragg and all that State Side B S Again !!!!

I was on a C-130 outta Phue Bia the Next Day !

SEE YA TOP, WOULDN'T WANTTA BE YA !!!

ONLY THING I REGRET WAS NEVER SEEING MY BROTHERS AGIN WHEN THEY CAME BACK IN.

I was assigned as a Patroling, live Fire, and RTO Instructor at "SERTS" (That's what they called P-School) Then.

DID MAKE IT BACK UP TO CAMP EAGLE AND ABU WHEN LINDA PATTERSON CAME TO NAM Representing City of San Mateo X-MAS 68 TO SEE ABU.

Most of you all I was with were long gone by then !

JUNGLE JIM AND I WERE ASSIGNED TO ESCORT HER AND Lt. Steve Patterson North to the Company as Body Guards !

Never saw the three of them again until 1st Brigade Only Reunion here in Mesa Arizona in 2004 put on by Ghost Rider ,Col. Morse.

Col Morse, and Retired Brigadier General Julius Johnson ( CPT. Johnson 67-68) also live here in the Phoenix Arzona area , along with many other ABUs' of my time period and other years !!!

Alwyas looking for brothers to reconnect with. this is the Best Place to find each other once again.

Stumbled upon the Web Site in 2004 and Found Jim Grainger and that led to soooo many others.

Still Looking for Sgt. Richard Kirk.
You still out there Brother ??

I really enjoy reading each of these post on here. It is still comforting to know that brothers always and continue to help one another, to include our lost ones friends and families. This web site is awesome and I have noticed that each time I check it, that there are more veterans from different conflicts and time lines. All of us have shared something with one another that we cannot explain or comprehend at times. When I was deployed with 2/327th INF HHC Scout Plt in 2003 to Iraq, we prepared for anything, everything and the worst. I thought that I had all my priority's and affairs in order. I increased my life insurance, completed a power of attorney and told my family how much I loved them, as I am sure most of you also did when you were given your orders. One thing I was not prepared for was when my CO (Capt. Garnica) and our battalion Chaplin (Capt. Brown) approached me and stated they had some terrible news for me. It was a Red Cross message and it was from by brother. These two officers and great leaders were given the task to inform me that my wife had died in a car wreck during my deployment and I was to return home immediately to our two small children ages 4 and 6. This is something I never had prepared for. I had to return home and raise two children on my own without a mother. This was another battle in itself and when I made it back home the first thing my son (age 4) told me was "his mommy had passed out". I did not know how to deal with everything at once. My brothers in arms still deployed, my children depending on solely me and my wife and high school sweet heart gone, all at once. To top it off, my wife had sent me some care packages and they returned to me about three months later. It had a card my wife and children had made for me for Easter with a photo of my wife and children in it. Life throws us all curves, but it is up to you how you handle each curve. I finished my military career at 2/327th and miss it each day. I had so much going for me with my military career, dreams and goals. I was honor graduate in basic and wanted my tab very bad. I never got it, but you still wonder at times if maybe just maybe what if. I wonder how old the oldest Ranger graduate was...lol Maybe I can beat a record. I stayed strong for children during those long months and I have re-married now. I also work for a local PD. I miss my brother's and think of them everyday. I wish them all a safe return home. Thanks to all you veterans who have served before me and after me. The 101st still has a "Rendezvous with Destiny".

THE NAM.The guys in DC really screwed that one up !!! We barely made it out alive. It's a damn sorry shame for all who didn't.Their memory I am sure, are with us all to this day. I came into D Co. around the end of July '69 with Terry Kivioja. A couple of days later I ended up with my platoon in the Elephant valley. On the 10th of August I was WIA while on a Battalion size operation in the A Shau.I came back to the Co. about 6 weeks later. We lost 9 KIA's from August '69 - August '70, and 6 more KIA's through '71. " REST IN PEACE BROTHERS " Please contact me anytime, old buddies, we have a lot of catching up to do. ABOVE THE REST. Pretz,

I have noted that the website headline on Firebase Tomahawk credits the 2/327. While I am sure they valiently served there, there is no mention of the other 1st Brigade troops on that hill. I was in Co C 1/327 in February 1968 when we first arrived there after flying north from Song Be. There was nothing on the hill at that time, but it was clear the marines had been there before us as there was no vegitation at all. We arrived there after a night movement against a .51 machine gun that had fired on us on Rte 1 the day before. We, second platoon, ambushed the crew, killing one and captured the gun in the early morning. (The machine gun is supposed to be at the museum at Fort Campbell, but I'm not sure about that.) We then moved onto the hill. We were there for about three weeks operating in the area of the pass below the hill and beyond. We got an idea why we were there when the third brigade of the 82nd drove through the pass in convoy after we had cleared it of mines and vc. There was much more to this, my first operation, than needs to said here. We had KIAs and WIAs during the operation that I will never forget. All the way...........

Alan,
served with C and D companies from Dec. 67 until Aug. 69.
Was one of the Peglegs that humped with you.
Was with C when we took the hill that became Veghel and later discovered the arti, anti aircraft guns and trucks.
Moved over to D company and was in Ashau in 69 when we took the atrillary fire on the floor of the valley. Will never forget that and our night march accross the valley. Was hit the next day as we started our way up the hill.
Contact me at [email protected] in regards to the reunion. Was at Ft. Campbell last Aug. for a reunion. It was my first time seeing those old grunts in 40 years. What a great time.

I am searching for any information about Sp4 Michael Joseph Galbraith. Mike was KIA on 6/6/66 in the Kontum Province. By his assignment to A Co,1ST BN,327TH Infrantry,101ST ABN DIV,I am assuming he was a casulaty during Operation Hawthorne. Mike was my brothers best friend and like a big brother to me and I am interested in learning about his service in country as well as perpetuating his memory, so that he is always remebered long after we are gone. If anyone has any information with regard to Michael, and or pictures, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.I just submitted and see that Mike's picture was published on the 327th Memorial page as well as on the Virtual Wall, for which I am very thankful and appreciative. Mike was the first and only casualty from our small upstate NY town and so my "Class of 67" dedicated its yearbook to him, our school erected a monument stone on our athletic field in his memory and my brother along with the local veterans groups established a scholarship in his name which continues to this day.Now that we are all getting older and the younger generation knows little of the sacrifices of our 58,000 plus "Brothers in Arms", I want to do as much as possible to assure that Michael is never forgotten. Please help me if you can. Thanks, Jerry

As I recollect, this happened during the insertion of Elephant Valley, about 18 clicks southeast of the Ashau. My unit was A/159thASHB, the other pilot was Larry Hines.

I was at Phu Loc on 6-10-70 I was with the 326 Eng. C Co. They sent me out to supervise the clearing of the mine field at Phu Loc, I had a profile and was not able to work so I just watched them work, the workers were snipers that went out at night and just worked a couple of hours a day. I was at Tomahawk when we first got in country it was the first firebase we were sent to. We stayed with the guy in radar it was ground surveillance, we were there about a month or so and we got to know the radar guys. the one that was killed by the canister was form radar, that night I was sleeping in a huch by myself when I was woke up by the first round the hit Pho Luc I didn't know what it was I though it was the Duster 40mm that would fire at night, we would watch from Tomahawk a few month back, the second one I know what it was, there was someone screaming form the hoch next to me. I was sleeping on the floor of the hoch on a matters that i poled oven me and put on my boots and ran outside to see what was going on. They were pulling out someone form the hoch the mortar had blown is foot off and they were carrying in out and up to the command bunker, I started back into my hoch when one of the guys said where are you going, I said I'm going to get my stuff,he said forget it come on lets get out of here, I turned and ran behind him and started up the stairs about ten yards form my hoch when another incomming round landed on it, I stated running faster. When I got to the top of the stairs I looked back and the hoch was almost gone and on fire I had a 79 and a 45, the founds from the 79 were going off. I got to the command bunker and a Major was stand there and asked me where my weapon was and I pointed at the remains of the hoch, he said oh!, All I had was a helmet and underwear and boots. One of the incoming rounds hit a ammo bunker and set off some CS gas, my gas mask was in the hoch too. The next day the guys for radar came down to Pho Luc and told me the Stemmens got hit in the head with a canister. My LT came to pick me up at the same time. I returned to my company with my 79 and 45 in my helmet in pieces , that's all I could find. I still think about what if I would went for my things, wish I could remember the guys name that said lets get out of here! The radar guys were Henry Hilton, Stewart and Johnson I think, of cores god bless Stemmons. There's a lot more

Dear Association and Members,

25 years ago while serving as an E-4 with B co. 2/502 "strike force" I was informed by my SGT to pack my bags for a trip to Dover Delaware to
participate in a memorial service for the troops of the 327 Battalion.

As I sat here last night with a drink in hand, searching for photos and
news articles over the internet of that event in my life, I found your website.

although I do not recall hearing of your association during my time at Ft.
Campbell,(1983 thu 1986) I just wanted to drop a note and thank you for your
time and the services to our troops who so bravely defend the life for
which we should all be so greatful.

I enjoyed the photos on your site dedicated to the 327 as much as I do the list of
names for the many fallen soldiers in 1985 of which I knew prior to their departure to the Sinia.

May God bless their souls, and bring your orginization to prospire in the years to come.

"AIR ASSAULT"

Thank you ever so much,

Joe Martin

I was the artillery forward observer for Bravo Company, 1/327th from March to August 1968. My nickname was Magoo. I have just posted (with the help of David J.) four pages of photos of that period under the Bravo Company link. Although a lot of the photos are Bravo Company specific, many pertain to the 1/327th as a whole as they include photos of FSBs Birmingham, Veghel, Bertschegaden and Operations Delaware and Nevada Eagle. They're posted under "Vietnam-1st Battalion-Companies-Brave Rifle Troops-Jim Kuhlman." Regards.

To the brother concerning the crash of a chinook in 71 before the 101 stood down or about that time.I remember a crash of the chinook where we lost 35 men. I served with must of those men and knew a black kid last name White from Texas I think who was pulled off at last minute due to over crowding.
I don't know where he went next but when the 101 stood down he may have left country then.
I hope that may be of help to you, if you want to talk futher I will be viewing this site from time to time so leave me a message.

June 10, 1970 attack on Tomahawk
Number one I would like to say this is a great website and thanks for letting me write. I was second shift leader in FDC for the 155 battery the night of the attack. We were actually a split battery of only three guns..we were split after a 10 day raid to FSB Pistol around the first of April..the other three were at FSB Arsenal at that time.I tend to agree with John Norman's recent post and an older one by Curtiss Wyman. Our KIA was caused by our own 81mm illum fire. As I recall we had about 6 wounded who were medivaced out right behind me stirring up dust right between the infantry and artillery area.Incoming to T-hawk was 82mm mortars, RPG's and small arms. I have onion skin copy of letter sent out 3 days later that says 21 enemy soldiers killed, 3 captured, although we found many more bodies later beyond the wire in the weeds. I later found out that we were attacked by a battalion sized unit of NVA sappers, on FSB Los Banos, T'hawk and Phu Loc at the same time.At the time of the attack their may have been 50 of us total on the base, counting infantry and artillery, and that might me a stretch. Capt. Cox saved our lives as Curtiss stated. Engineers came in next morning and exploded about 500 lbs of satchel charges from the bodies..we also captured 3 RPG's.9 ak's with folding stocks, 2 9mm chicom revolvers and one belt buckle with red star

Delta was a dedicated BN in Phu Loc, ambushing had not been in the Ashu before T-Hawk. Half of my platoon was on T-Hawk, I was at the bottom of hill with the rest of my platoon. 155's can't fire illumination straight up, round probably came from FSB Roy 105. No Colonels bunker, no bunkers destroyed, no 122 rockets fired at T-Hawk. Attack was by NVA Sapper BN not VC.

Over the last decade, I have met and interviewed scores of World War II combat veterans. With rare exception, these men never discussed or shared their experiences with their families. Their reasoning was simple - nobody who didn't experience what they had could understand; so they said little or nothing.

Most of their children, now in their fifties and sixties, wish those experiences had been shared. For the vast majority, it is too late, but not for another important exchange to occur - one with their fellow sons and daughters of this Greatest Generation. I am creating a publication whereby you can share your memories of these veterans with each other.

If you are interested, please let me know.

I was sitting here in my living room and just had this sudden urge to try and connect with my brother who was killed Viet Nam on 6-8-1967. Imagine the look on my face when I did a Yahoo search for THOMAS L HOENIGES and find your website with his picture up! Thank you so much! I was only 10 when my brother was taken from all of us - so if any one out there has stories that they can tell me about him I would greatly appreciate it. I have all the family and friends stories but very few of him being in Viet Nam. This could really help me with the final stages of healing from our loss. Thank you to all who read this.........Georgia

To. LTC ( RET) Beegle,

Dear sir,

My name is Theodore E Arnold ( Bud ). You may have known my father MSgt Ted Arnold.
I'm sitting here looking at a box of photos taken of members of the 327 between 1966 and 1967.The desciption on the back of this particular photo lists you and Lt Whalen. Our family is trying to put together the events and actions surrounding the engagement at Trung Luong. We came upon the 327 web site and your account of those treacherous days in 1966. Any help you might give us in reconstructing those days would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

I am looking for some of the 37+ Lieutenants who came together at FT Benning in the Fall 1968. We were designated as replacements to the 101st Airborne, Vietnam. As a group, we went through Jump School at Ft Benning, then Jungle School in Panama, then P-Training at Bien Hoa, then sent to the various division units. I think each battalion got 3-4 of us. I went to the 2/327th Infantry along with Gene Lee and Harold Ozzy MacCaughy. Since our DEROS dates were the same, many of us came together again at the end of our tours.

I am looking for any of the men of this group of replacements or anybody else who might have known me. I am originally from Lincoln, Nebraska.

He's one of five from my small home town who died in Vietnam, and I'm trying to set up a small memorial in Brownwood, TX. I'm from there and retired in 2001 after 30 years in the Army. I just ran into this site by surfing. A Co. 2/327th Infantry was my home. I will never forget that place for as long as I live. A "Band Of Brothers" we were, from 1989 to 1993. "BOS" Brothers Of Struggle is what they called us. All from different places in the states but there for one cause. Let's see - Bailey, Senior, Taylor, Ross, A. Jones, Hardridge "Rabbit", Lizana, King and myself J. Jones. I made a shirt that displays the "Eagles" on each shoulder and I wear it quite often. I work here at the VAMC in Jackson, MS and I'm always called "Screeming Eagle" by the vets when I wear my shirt. That was the happiest time of my life. Also, if anyone can assist me in getting my medals, please do.

I found your site thanks to a friend of mine who was an FO with the 327th. I was most interested to read about the Christmas Eve Accident. I was the medic with Alpha battery that night. I was helping with the fire mission that night as I always tried to help the guys when ever I could. All of these years and I really didn't know what happened. Christmas has been hard for me, but at least you answered alot of questions. Thanks
