The Irony of Wars.
On Nov. 26, 1971 (Thanksgiving day) a Chinook helicopter took off from Phu Bai airbase in
the I Corps region of Vietnam with 30 members of the elite 1/327th Infantry Brigade of the 101st Airborne Infantry Division and a flight crew of 4. A short time later there was an SOS from the pilot and the radio went blank. The Chinook was shot down by a single rocket propelled grenade by an enemy force. All 34 aboard were killed. It took 3 days just to find them due to weather and 2 more just to get to the Chinook because of the dense terrain. It appeared that their may have been survivors but the enemy had made sure they were dead. It was a site and situation that would make ANY 20 year old young man to have nightmares for the rest of his life. And for that, There was no news report of the loss. There was no sadness from a nation for the loss of these soldiers. There were no welcome homes for warriors and survivors of the Vietnam War. But there were protesters, politicians, movie stars and even past war veterans that made sure that the warriors of the Vietnam War felt the blame, guilt and shame for what they had to endure during that time of their young impressionable lives. At least now we can feel the sorrow of the family's and the other soldiers for this loss as we Vietnam Veterans Know what that loss means. There are over 58,200 names on a marble wall in Washington DC that does not let us forget.
My how a society can change in a short period of time for it's warriors. Thank God we can.
God Bless our men and women defending our Freedom and Liberty and may God accept every one of the brave Soldiers that perished in this incident.

accounting of this incident is under stories on Inside the Wire.

I was on Bastogne with A Battery 2/94, Sep '71 - Jan '72 - 8" at first, then 175mm. I was back in 2009, Bastogne is totally grown over with young trees and weeds. You cannot see the holes where the bunkers were...I fell right into Gun 3's crew bunker hole. My son is there now, I cannot tell on the map if it is on 15 or AH1. I think we took 15 out of Phu Bai. Anyone know?

Thanks Ken and Angie for another wonderful reunion. Thanks, too, for allowing my unannounced book signing. Thanks to all who bought my books and made it a success. Sorry that I ran out. I should have bought more with me. I still have 15 copies left at home if anyone wanted one but missed out or got to Cobra Lake late.

I may well go to hell for saying this but I'll do it; I'm sure that hell will be there one way or the other. At what point in time did we become friendly with what I still refer to as the enemy. At any given time they would have killed us and the reverse is true. Most of those reading this know what went on "over there". I watch specials on the tube about vets returning to the "Nam" and re-living their experience..wow. To each his own. Given the chance, I would rather have a shit covered punji stick stuck up my ass and not have a dust off within two days flight time. I guess there is no milk of human kindness in my veins but I do not understand. As things turn out I find that my time there was at once the worst time of my life and possibly the best thing that ever happened to me. I spent my time there with some of the finest people I have ever known and I don't mean to offend anyone but I felt the need to speak my mind on this and I just did. Bless all of those that returned and especially those that did not.

I would like to include 3 or 4 pictures in the web site. 1 is of a South Vietnamese Soldier who served in Phu Yen Province in 1965-75 and was imprisoned for 18 months by the North and the second is of an NVA and his wife. The NVA was at the Trung Luong Battle as well as the attack on Hill 86. Let me know how I can attach them. Thanks

I just spent the last month (June) in Vietnam. I visited several areas including Tuy Hoa. I was with B Company 2/327 from June-December, 1966. I was able to interview several South Vietnamese Soldiers and civilians who were in the area during the Battle at Trung Luong, June 19th-23rd. I was put in contact with a formed NVA who fought at the Trung Luong Battle as well as the attack on Hill 86 in September 17th 1966. He was a private with the 18th B (PAVN) Regiment. I am the mist of writing my next book about the Trung Luong battle. To my 2/327th colleagues: I have pictures of Trung Luong 1-2-3, Hill 258 and of Hill 86(which is completely overgrown) I will place excerpts of my writing on line for those that are interested. It was quite an experience to speak to an NVA, now retired Captain due to wounds, who was involved in both attacks and has a very good memory of both. One of his comments was about the heavy rain that allowed the sapper unit to come up Hill 86 undetected. 2 companies of the 18th B regiment and 1 Main force Unit (30th from the 302 Pavn Division were involved in the attack, according to his recollection. More later.

I was with A CO 1/327 Inf (ABU) 1970 to 1971 and I read the story about the eve 24th Dec. and I was there also when the HE rounds landed, I was an RTO for the 1st platoon, I heard check fire, check fire we been hit, cpt Lampkin said what is your stat, the green LT said we have KIA and wounded, the CP was with the 3rd platoon so the cpt said that they were going to there NDP to help with the wounded, which made sence cause the the CP and 3rd platoon had there own medic which would be 3 total to help the 2nd platoon with the wounded and cut LZ to make space so the coppers could come in and carry them out, the KIA were left there over nite in body bag and ponchos until daylight cause it was already dark, there no light when your in the jungle, that night there were 9 KIA and 12 wounded but 3 died later, I remember the service the we had for them on firebase Bastogne, I still know the names and faces, one of them I got to know well, his name was Larry Heen, I was suppose to go with him to the 2nd Platoon but got picked to go to the 1st platoon, I remember at the service when they said his name they said that his wife had just given birth to a newborn son, I had only been in country a couple of months, Larry had been there 6+ months which they call over the hump time, I was glad to have know him even if it was for a short time it seem longer, i'll never forget those guy, I just hooked up with Mil Thorton on this web site, I read the stories and said I know this guy and he rememberd me, and has help me a great deal on some issue that I needed advice on, and will keep in touch with him, they called me (VAL) RTO for the 1st platoon and the CP under sarg. Mullens, cpt Lampkin and Niskien from NOV 1970 to DEC. 1971......101st airborne/airmoble 1/327 INF ABU CO Above The Rest...Sign Ernie (val) Valenzuela

In response to David Scherzer's inquiry reagarding Dan Carr, Jessie Sanchez etc. I finally "surfaced" in 1999 (bought a house, put the ruck down). By the way Dave, I do remember you and thankyou for your service, God knows I'da been dead 10 times over had you not had the balls to hump that gun day in and day out!! So Carr found me in 99 by hi tech computer gibbery (probably my service number popped up on the house deed), he invited me out to his house with his wife and 2 children that summer, been flying out there for 7-10 days every summer since. Got a hold of Capt. Piel and he even came out a couple of times, somebody that Dan came "in-country" with (4/69)will be there this year, his first name is Charley. Any hoo, I too have been looking for guys, sometimes I'll pursue it for a couple of months then lose track. Right now I am looking for Terry "Red Ant" Wilson, Bob Hannah etc Lutz, Big Daddy, MacKnight, Angel. I am retired right now (can't believe I've lived this long, it's the longest I have ever lived). Untill I hear from you Dave.

In response to Richard Moffett's entry date 5/23 this year. A unit of the 2/327 (Bravo company)were assigned to riff the hills west of "Camp Eagle" in way early 1969 (can't rememer the date much less the month but I think it was February '69)As we were ascending the highest hill in the area to make our NDP, there were a dozen or more 122 mm rockets launched right over our heads, man that shit was LOUD, everybody intially thought we were dead for a split second before we realized that it was out going stuff. We NDP'ed right there and heard over the horn that one of Eagle's ammo dumps had been hit.At sunup six Huey's came in and airlifted 3rd platoon to the top of the hill, they worked their way down while the rest of the company cut trail up. The NVA fired this things off of bamboo rails and had deedee maued out of the area. Never did hear what ammo dump because that day they airlifted the battalion into the A-Shaw Valley. So Richard, I would have to assume that what we heard as ammo dump being hit was more likely than not the fuel dump that you alluded to in your entry. Welcome home brother!!

I came to this site to try to locate a lost friend, Eddie Dutchie, Cobra Co. 1/327. I'm so happy that you have an address listed for him and I'm hopeful that it is a good listing so I can get in touch with him after all these years. Eddie and I went through Basic, AIT, Jump School and were at Ft. Campbell together until we received our orders for Vietnam. Eddie was sent to the 1/327 and I was sent to A Troop 2/17 Airborne Cav. I did 2 tours with A Troop was wounded in a battle in the A Shau and evacuated home. I soon 1049'd back to the 173d where I volunteered for E 20th LRP which became C Co 75th Inf Ranger. As much as I loved my 101st I kept my jump pay by going to the 173d. - Hopefully I can make commo with Eddie and we can get together and reminisce old times in the Army together. God bless all here.

My father, 1st Lt. Bob Gerber, was in the 327th GIR (Battle of the Rhinleand and Central Europe).
After the war officially ended he stayed on in Bertches Garden and was assigned as the Athletic Director to organize athletic events to occupy the troops who were awaiting return to the states.
Any info or anybody with info on him would be gratefully appreciated. My dad recently died and his 101st airborne ball cap was aside his casket at the funeral. He was also in the 82nd.
Thank you.

His son Bob.

I am so honored to finally locate the 327th Infantry. My Uncle Ptc. Francis DeSales Wills was MIA (later BB) on 2/26/66 with Sgt. David Newton. Here's his full rank "RECON PTL/HHC/Tiger Company l966/1st Airborn 327th Infantry".

I would love to attend a 327th reunion so I can hopefully locate anyone who remembers my beloved Uncle Sales. I went to several 1-9 Walking Dead (Marines)Reunions and truly enjoyed them. But, I would like to be with my Uncle's Tiger Company Unit. This would mean the world to me.

Those that remember June 22 1971. Alpha Co. 1st platoon, 1/327 and the murder of Marshall Miller.
I have been in contact with his cousins in Phoenix.
The person that murdered him is Oscar Martinez. He served approx 20 years in Leavenworth. Not sure how I feel about that. Marshall was my best friend in country and when I went on R&R; I talked him into taking over my radio for the platoon leader. If I wasn't able to get anyone I wasn't going to get to go on R&R.; That R&R; was when I married my wife 40 years ago. I was one day away from returning when Martinez locked and loaded on Marsh over some C-Rats.
I really want to find someone that was there to talk with them to find out exactly what happenend that day. For me and Marsh's family.

In July 1971 on FSB Binh Dinh my unit (B Btry 2/11) and a platoon from the 327th occupied this bald hill about 3km from Vegal. The unit had their mortar platoon with them and one of the tubes exploded killing several soldiers, two which were leaving the next few days going home. I have pictures of the platoon (before the explosion), and several members of the unit, they flew a Texas Flag above their Fire Direction Center.

If anyone knows of any surviving family members who would like pictures I would consider it an honor to send them the pictures that I have. If its any help we got hit by a Typhoon the night before the incident and it rained like it was going to turn the entire valley into a lake.

I have approximaly 20 pictures of the area around the small fire base, and many of those pictures include the great infantry soldiers from the 327th that provided us security.

I remain, a Redleg, tried and true. But there is nothing like "No Slack". They saved my gun sections bacon, on more than one occasion.

Respectfully, Command Sergeant Major (Retired) H.E. Lewis, Field Artillery.

Looking for anyone who was with Company A 1st 327th Inf on and around the sixth of June 1966. One of your own, Michael Joseph Galbraith, and dear friend of mine lost his life on that day. I have tried numerous times to get information as to what happened on that day. The after action report talks about June 7th on but not what happened the day before when your unit lost several troopers. A picture of Michael is shown on your website so perhaps you knew him or at least can provide me with some insight as to just what happened on that day.

Guys, the Montagnards were always supportive of us during the war. They suffered terribly for that support by the NVA & VC. There is a settlement of Montagnards in NC. Please be informed about these people by going to http://www.montagnards.org/ Thanks. ABU/1st/327/101st- 1967

I just lost my dearest friend. John Feeney served with tiger force in 1966-1967. John was a proud member, but never would open-up about his Viet Nam tour. I'm a retired Marine and closest friend John had to share information with, but we both remained closed lip and he took his to the grave. I'm looking for anyone who might remember the lanky kid from brockton, ma

While visiting this web site my brother was suprised to see the picture of the troop he served with in Viet Nam. And as he retold some of the stories about the boys (men) he had served with I noticed that his name was not included in the list of soldiers. His name is Harry David Rooks and he standing sixth from the left, in the second row. I have this picture and have looked at it many times over the years with him. I also noticed his name is not included in the group list of the troop.

I served with D/1st/327th from Jan.1969 to June 1969. I was in many areas shown in these photos. We mainly operated out of Phu Loc. We were on the hill opposite Hill 88 (FSB Tommahock) when it was overrun in June 1969. I pulled security on the hill a couple of times. Tese photos bring back a lot of memories.

I just got a call from Danny Skaggs. In country 1970-71 with A Co. 1/327 ABU.
I had done a search online and came up with an address in Oklahoma. I wrote a letter to see if it was the same Danny Skaggs I served with. He was the platoon Seargent during part of my tour.
Funny thing is that he is working in Phoenix until Friday. Go Figure. I will be going down to meet him for dinner tomorrow evening. Been looking for him for 40 years.
Thought I'd share because you never know who might pop up if you just do a name search on the internet. He is not into computors so he doesn't know about the 327 sight. I'm going to take some info to him.
OORAH!!

I served with C 1/327th in the last week of May 1967. Came from Dow tieng near Saigon to Phan Rang then on to Duc Pho for patrolling in the hills before I got hit twice on May 29th. I remember the briefing that morning and viewing the map for hills 885 and 886, came up a long ridge into the saddle between and went up the slope to the top of rightmost hill; got hit on the way up around Noon or so since I checked my watch at the saddle before going up the ridge. Don't remember a lot since I was in/out of conscienceness except being put in the chopper around dark and body bags..... Anyone can help fill in the details please call e-mail or write....

It's interesting that Eric Miller talks so poorly about the scout dog handler team. My dad was a scout dog handler for the 101st 42nd IPSD. He lost 2 dogs. One on hill 714 and one on Hill 882. Both dogs were killed as they alerted on the enemy. My dad walked point about a 1/4 of a mile in front of the platoon he was assigned to. Now I know not all dog teams were as dedicated as he was. He'll tell you that himself. It is frustrating though to see all scout dog teams spoken about in such a negative way. Scout dogs saved thousands of lives and gave their own in defense of their country. Then after being such loyal soldiers they were put to sleep because they were considerd extra supplies. Please remember that you were all over there together trying to make it home!!

Thank you,
Crissy Sawyer

My dad Vern Hagen served in Vietnam from August 4, 1966 to September 1967 with B Company, 2/327th, 2nd and 4th Platoons. This site has been a great tool to help him get in touch with many of his brothers over the past few years.
My dad has been trying to get in contact with a brother he thinks lived in Pennsylvania named Ruhel McElhattan I am not sure on the spelling or state for sure but if anyone knows my dad or Ruhel, let me know.
I will be forever indebted to my dad as well as every one of you including the way to many that paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Thank you for any information you can provide my dad,

I come back often to see if anyone is asking about my Dad CSM Joseph John Dayoc..Jr. what a soldier. He has passed away but I have heard from many soldiers since then that he was a mentor..and a mans soldier..He loved the army,,he loved his troops, and we were so proud of his service to our country. I miss him everyday. I see things on TV..and can hear his voice in the background, expressing his dislike for our situation today. I just want to continue to honor him however I can. I love him dearly. He was always my hero.

WOW. What a find. Thanks. That is A co. 1/327th. I was the RTO for 1st platoon. We secured Fury for a 3 day artillery support mission that was going to go on in the Ashau. I remember very well and I recognize the guys that are getting off the birds and the group standing around when the camera pans Left to Right. That was 1st platoon.
I don't ever remember cameras being around at all.
I also have pictures of some of it that completely coincides with some of the video.
Awesome,
Thanks for posting this.

Hello,
My dads name was Don Cisar and he was a Vietnam Veteran...A very proud one at that. He never talked much about it, I can think of only a few stories in all my years. One had to do with Christmas Eve 1970, which was very bad, and another was about how him and the guys used to pull pins on grenades, hold them and see who could get them to blow up in the air. He said they would do that for "fun". Dad has since passed away due to a heart attack. April 23rd 2010. It was kinda coincidental that he left for the Army on April 23rd 1970, forty years to the day. Anyways, my mom, brothers and I were going through some of his things this weekend and came across some of his Vietnam items. I picked out an old "ABU Assassins" Zippo lighter.

Pops, as us and the grandkids, called him was a member of the A Company 1/327th Infantry 101st Airborne Division. He served from '70-71. Some of the guys I know of from his pictures were Allen Libbert, Buck and Drill. Him and Al Libbert have always kept in touch over the years and this year my mom received a very nice memorial book about dad along with pics from their time serving their country.

South Dakota dedicated a Vietnam Vetrans memorial, a few years back, in Pierre. Dad & mom went to the dedication ceremony and even got a ride in a Huey. Mom, being the team player she is (and petrified of heights) was right by dads side in the chopper. That chopper ride was very theraputic for him and it was shortly after that that he told of the Christmas Eve 1970 story. I could not imagine going through that, or what any of you went through.

Thank you to all of you for all of your sacrafices and heroism. I salute you all!!

I love you and miss you Pops."

Topher,

I did not know your dad but I was there when he was and in the same company. As Paul said prior that Christmas Eve 1970 was a very bad day along with Christmas the next day. If you would like to know more about that day feel free to contact me by email or 714-335-4557.
If I saw a picture, then I would maybe remember him.
When we were there, we were almost always out in the jungle in our platoons patroling or on a firebase pulling outer security and really never got to know many of the others except maybe on Eagle Beach when we got to spend a few days there. Of course most of us didn't remember much when we were there.
Good for you to honor your father with his service and thank you for letting us know about our brother going to sit with Jesus.

Our anniversaries are close together bro. Your story is real and I know you honor those brothers that perished.
The Christmas eve 1970 friendly fire accident just past and I was able to get past another year of celebrating the lives of 12 brave brothers that perished that day.
Take it easy Bro.

Today January 24th, 2011 I sat here all day remebering this same day 43 years ago. I was with my "ABU" Brothers in Phuoc Long Province at a place called Song Be. We had walked into a Regimental NVA Bunker complex. All hell broke loose.
Today I sat here remembering our Fallen Brothers:
Jon Grimmett, Fayetteville N.C., John R. Favor, Flint Michigan, George J. Holly III, Las Vegas , Nevada, William W. McClendon Jr., New Orleans, Louisiana, Ernest Patrick Palcic, New York,NY.
I can't recall the names of all our Wounded Brothers , as it has been so Long AGO.
May we never forget the Scarafice they all made all those years ago for all of us.
I also sat here thinking of my Best Friend who was also there with us Jim Grainger "Jungle Jim " who we lost last year in Tucson, Arizona. I missed calling him this year to consule him, as he broke down every January 24 when he would recall his friend Jon Grimmett and loosing him There ,all those years ago.

I know that during those two to three days the NVA had us All pinned down and surrounded that All of us thought that would be our last Firefight in Nam.
We can only thank God that he had Blessed us with Capt. Julius Johnson. Capt. Johnson Saved us from being totally over run and wiped out as an Infantry Company !
I know that last day trapped there I had looked around that morning and I saw the realization on everyone's face that We were not going to Walk out of there. Yet we All had the look of Resolve also on our faces that we were going to go down fighting "TOGETHER". I could see it on every Brothers Face that I could see from my position. They, We had prepared ourselves to meet "OUR DESTINY". We were Ready for the Final Fight, The last Battle of Our Lives.

My Fears were No Longer there , as I looked around at my Brothers. They were washed from me. I knew that I was where I was supposed to be. With who I was supposed to be with. These were My Brothers. We would have Each Others Backs until the Last of us Fell. A calm came over me , and I did not Fear what lay ahead that day.
Capt. Julius Johnson called in everything available to him,Except "BROKEN ARROW" and by some unknown Miracle the NVA ended up hunkered down ,and allowed us to get away to fight Many a More Day ! We carried our dead and wounded Brothers Out, With Us, NO Brother was Left Behind !
We Humped most of that day to hook up with C-Company and the extra man power and fire power they afforded us.
I pray that All of Us that went on to Return Home have never forgotten the Price our Brothers paid there.
I pray We All have lived the kind of life Our Brothers were never afforded !
I pray they All have been with our Lord and Savior for all these years.
I Truly Pray to see them All again someday and hold them all Close Once Again !

ABU/ ATR
We were Young
We were Warriors
We are Brothers, Forever !

Does anyone remember medic Doc Vazquez, he wsa killed in Dok To in June I think it was on the 6th anyway it was the last time I had a true friend. We left him and the trooper he was trying to save. We pulled back to a better position on the next hill. We had to hump down the mountian so they Could carpet bomb the hill. We went back the next day to clean up and recover the bodies. I was the one that put doc in tha body bag. Thats when every thing changed thanks. Wild Bill

I will be going in June to interview some of the combatants we (2/327) faced in the area around Trung Luong, June 19-23, 1966. Additionally, my contact is attempting to locate any of the civilian POW's that the 1/327th, Tiger Force liberated in September, 1966. I will be videotaping the interviews as well as stills of Tuy Hoa and Villages at Trung Luong. This research is part of my next book about the Phu Yen Province and the determined effort by the north in that part of the country. Phu Yen had been a Revolutionary hotbed since the 1930,s. As a side light, my research found that the Phu Yen Province had over 33,000 NVA and local VC (all types of units) during the 1966-67 timeframe.

It was an uneventful patrol but we came upon a wide river with some native canoes/kayaks. A couple of us try to take them out in the river but they immediately sank under our weight. It's not that we were so heavy it's just that these boats were made for small people.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Topher,
I served with your Dad, I am the one the called Buck. He Allen and I were good friends.
I am so sorry to hear about Don.

Don was a good guy and a good trooper. He was well liked in our unit. The Dec 24 incident was a bad day.

Be proud of Dan and his service, I am proud and honored to have gotten to serve with him.
