I am looking for guys that would have been on operation Lamar Plain in
Quang Tri in mid 69.
I was a photo officer with the 221st Signal (company pictorial) and two of
my photographer and I photographed some contact when we joined D company
somewhere in Quang Tri. My photos are at www.azcreative.com/vietport. There
is one shot of a trooper running over the crest of a hill. I was to follow
him shortly thereafter. We were assaulting down a hill and across a rice
paddy which was totally open to enemy fire. There was a brother with a thump
gun that was covering people as they crossed the paddy. I noticed that when
he fired the enemy machine gun would go quiet so I decided I would try for
the berm on the far side the next time he fired. I heard the thump and I was
off and running. I got half way across and hit a slick spot on the dike and
went face down totally exposed. I just laid there until I heard the gunner
fire again and then I made it across the last half. Between taking photos I
wanted to help out with the fight so I decided I would popup and fire a few
rounds. As soon as my head went up I was feeling the conflict between taking
the time to find a target in the tree line and knowing that I was the duck
in the shooting gallery. I got off a couple of shots and my extractor
broke. At first I didn?t realize it was an extractor problem. The adrenaline
high didn?t allow for that kind of detailed analysis. I borrowed a cleaning
rod from the machine gunner and used the weapon muzzle loader style to knock
out the brass after each shot. It only took two shots to convince me this
was a futile activity. With all the activity going on it did not take long
for me to shoot all my film. At that point I had a useless weapon and no
film. The platoon leader asked me if I would lead a group of wounded to the
rear.
We were walked down a shallow ditch and then crawled the rest of the way.
One of the guys was shot in the ass and was worried about his nuts. I was
crawling behind him and he asked me how bad the damage was. Since my face
was almost in his ass I was able to render an accurate report. His family
jewels seemed to be entirely intact, but he lost an ice cream scoop sized
piece of his rear cheek and was bleeding pretty heavily. When we got back to
the rear area, the medics pounced on us. I remember one kept trying to treat
me. Due to air support and ringing ears he could not hear my protests that I
was fine and would he please treat the guy shot in the ass. Then I realized
that the blood from the guy?s butt had been flipped by the grass onto my
face and the medic thought I had a head wound.
All this was brought to mind today when I was in a book store and picked
up a book on the 101st written by two Brits called 101st Airborne In
Vietnam: The Screaming Eagles. The authors are Michael Sharpe and Simon
Dunstan. On page 61, I saw two of my company D photographs both showing the
thump gunner.
If you are in contact with any of the company D folks please as them to
have a look at www.azcreative.com/vietport. They may also be interested in
www.daspo.com and www.combatcamera.org.
I look forward to hearing from you.

4.The all night fire fight at the saigon airstrip during TET. we held our position with the help of an abandoned D21 catapillar.

Thank you for your years of Service and most especially for being the 1SG that we will always think of when we see or speak of Cold Steel. To all Cold Steel Members Past and Present. I would like to thank you all for your support and prayers, while this great company continues to write the history that so many have before us. We have been in country for 9 months now and have been very successful in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our success has come at a price, with the loss of some soldiers. They were great americans, and friends for life. Russ and Faye Thanks for everything. We won't be there this year for the Reunion, but Can count on us next year. Once again Thank YOU ALL. In case you don't remember, I was 3rd platoon leader in Abu - 1/327 from June '67 until around Jan-Feb '68. I went back to become ABU xo just before Artavia fell. I just found this web site. I want to thank you guys for establishing and maintaining it. I have a question that maybe some of my brother abu vets can answer. Sometime in 67 we liberated a prisoner of war camp somewhere in the central highlands. What I remember most were the tiger cages and the filth the viet prisoners were kept in. Also, I remember they killed a pig and ate it with very little cooking. If any of you can fill in the details I would appreciate it.
That coupled with Mothers day hill and our operations in Tam Ky a memories that for some reason pesist.
One other question- has any one heard from John Wayne Boatwright, timmons, smitty, doc ainsworth or boattella. If so, please let me know how to contact them.
Above the Rest,
Gabby

Erik thank you for your posting on the website. Your military career will be ending soon but we know that you will always be a Cold Steel Cobra at heart just as others before you.. Thank you for your years of Service and most especially for being the 1SG that we will always think of when we see or speak of Cold Steel. We wish you and Tina a wonderful life in your retirement and remember that Crossville is not that far from Missouri and we will see you there next June. Above the Rest

Cold Steel 7

Hi guys,
In case you don't remember, I was 3rd platoon leader in Abu - 1/327 from June '67 until around Jan-Feb '68. I went back to become ABU xo just before Artavia fell. I am in contact with "Gabby" Thompson who turned me on to your great site. If any of you are still out there and feel like talking, please drop me a line. I miss you all.

Above the Rest,
Gabby
