Wild Bill asked me to post this, so doggone it, here it is.
This message from Sgt E-5 Bill Smith "ABU" 1/327th 67-68 "SERTS" 68-69
This SITREP goes out to all the "ABU" who were with A-CO 1/327th from 1967-1972 in the NAM. Those of you who were with ABU know the story of Joe Artavia. The city of San Mateo ,and Joes sister Linda .who later married Joes Platoon leader Lt. Steve Patterson. Steve was wounded the same day that Joe was KIA. Joe had written to his sister Linda in San Mateo sometime around Christmas of 67. ABUs, A-Co. morale was at the lowest it had ever been. Joe asked Linda if she would go to the Mayor and the City Council of San Mateo and see if the people of his Home Town of San Mateo would maybe just write to the guys in A-Co. Linda did just that and the end result was that the City Council and the citizens of San Mateo stepped up to the Plate and went "ALL THE WAY" by adopting A-Co. Sadly and to a great loss to us all. OurBrother Joe Artavia met his "RENDEZVOUS with DESTINY " three months later and was KIA in Thua Thien , March 24th 1968. We all know that in those days of war protests and the general publics attitude towards the war . Adopting a company of Airborne Infantry was not the most popular thing to be doing. The City of San Mateo and it's great citizens only saw that we were hurting and came to support us when we needed that the most. God Bless San Mateo,Calif. Joe Artavia and Linda. We started receiving Care Packages and mail from total strangers on a regular basis. Those of us who were there in 68 knew what that meant to all of us! The City of San Mateo sent us all invitations to come to San Mateo ,if we wanted to, once we arrived back in "THE WORLD".as the Citys Honored Guests. Those of you who did ,know and remember what that was like! The City of San Mateo sent us all The Key To The City, and special Medallions. The City requested permission from the Army to send Linda to Vietnam to bring us gifts and to see the troopers of "ABU" They finally recieved permission and Linda came to Vietnam in 68. Jim Grainger and I were,by then on our second tour at "SERTS" known to all those that went through it as "P-School. It had been moved from Phan Rhang to Bien Hoa. We were there as instructors in 68-69. We had wanted to return to possibly help save as many Brothers as we could with better preperation prior to going North. We were summoned to meet Linda after she arrived in Bein Hoa and honored with orders to escort her North to Phu Bai and out to the firebases to meet with the ABU troopers she had come all that way to see. In 1972 when "ABU" left Vietnam. The City of San Mateo asked for and recieved permission to have the Company come to San Mateo as a unit. They held a parade through town and turne out in mass to honor our service and Scarafices made in Vietnam. The company was treated like Royalty ! Since then, Linda has worked tirelessly to carry on her promise to her brother Joe and carry on the legacy of the adoption of 'ABU". Linda set up "ASA" , Americans Supporting Americans. She has worked all these years to find cities that would be willing to step up to the plate and adopt units that were going into harms way or not! She has been encouraging many cities to adopt units from all Branches of the Service and do for them what San Mateo had done for A-Co. all those years ago and still does to this day ! "ASA" is a NON -Profit organization and Linda has flown all over this graet country of ours to meet with City Mayors to encourage them and their citizens to adopt units. She has done this at her own expense and with the help of private donations. My fellow "ABU BROTHERS" . It is time for us to step up to the plate to help Linda and show our appreciation not only for us ,but what she is still doing for our young Brother Warriors today. Linda was just recently summoned to Washington D.C. to meet with President Bush to be Honored for all that she has done for Military units over all these years. AWESOME !!! I come to you and ask that you join with me in donating to this Great Organization and show our appreciation for not only what they have done for us ,but also what they continue to do for so many today I have personally set aside part of my VA Disability (70% PTSD) to be donated each month to this Great Organization and what it does for so many of our Brothers in Uniform today. My Brother "ABU" Warrior Brothers won't you join with me and show our thanks and appreciation for all that has been done for us by sending your donations to this great cause. Please send all donations to: Americans Supporting Americans P.O. Box 574 Pacific Palisades , CA. 90272

Looking for anyone who served in Ashau Valley, PhuBi area during Spring and Summer of 1966. We lost a very special soldier there, May 18, 1966, and would like to know more about the area, i.e. the bigger picture surrounding all that occurred there. The soldier's name was PFC Michael Paul Randall of Los Angeles. He was a Radio Operator assigned to a Ranger Battalion in that area. Unfortunately, that is the extent of my information. Thanks ever so much for anything contributed to this effort.
