This is the 327th Infantry Regiment Unit Shield

Coat of Arms

Shield. Azure, a palmetto tree eradicated argent, over all a bend gules fimbriated of the second charged with three fleurs-de-lis palewise of the like.

Crest. None.

Motto. Honor and Country.

The shield is blue for Infantry; blue is also the color of the South Carolina State flag. The palmetto tree is from the State flag of South Carolina, the allocation of the 327th Infantry while allotted to the Organized Reserves. The red bend is taken from the arms of the ancient province of Lorraine, and the fleurs-de-lis indicate the three major operations in which the organization participated during World War I.

Distinctive Insignia.
The insignia is the shield and motto of the coat of arms of the regiment.

Lineage

Constituted in National Army 5 August 1917 as 327th Infantry Regiment, assigned to 82d Division. Organized 17 September 1917 at Camp Gordon, Ga. Demobilized 26 May 1919 at Camp lipton, N. Y. 82d Division demobilized 18 May 1919, relieving components from assignment; reorganized in 1922 in Organized Reserves. Reconstituted, allotted to Organized Reserves, assigned to 82d Division, 4th Corps Area, 24 June 1921, and organized December 1921. Activated 25 March 1942 at Camp Claiborne, La. Redesignated 327th Glider Infantry Regiment and assigned to 101st Airborne Division 15 August 1942. Service Company, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, reconstituted and consolidated with Antitank Company, 327th Glider Infantry Regiment; 1st Battalion, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, reconstituted and consolidated with 3d Battalion, 327th Glider Infantry Regiment, 6 April 1945. Inactivated 30 November 1945 in Germany. Redesignated 516th Airborne Infantry Regiment and assigned to 101st Airborne Division 18 June 1948. Designated Regular Army Unit 25 June 1948. Activated 6 July 1948 at Camp Breckinridge, Ky. Inactivated 22 April 1949 at Camp Breckinridge. Activated 25 August 1950 at Camp Breckinridge.

Note that this says 516th, but is for what eventually went back to being the 327th. The regiment began as the 327th, was the 516th for a short time and went back to 327th. All the information provided is for our unit.

This is from the Army Lineage Book of 1953, so that is why it does not record beyond that date. I have tried to find a more current book, but so far, no luck.

The History of the 327th Infantry Regiment Crest was sent to us by Alex “Doc Ollie” Yaron. Doc was a Medic assigned to ABU company in ’68 – ’69
